Trevors Introduction
Grand Theft Auto V (2013)
Few sequences in any video game will ever get close to being as crazy as Trevors introduction in Grand Theft Auto V. If youve played the previous games, you know who Johnny is - and its a shocking twist to have him show up in Trevors intro just to get completely massacred. But you dont need context of who Johnny is to see that Trevors got a few screws loose. He was just trying to confront Trevor about messing around with his girlfriend Ashley, and Trevor reacted brutally.
Area 69 Mission
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004)
While GTA has had its fair share of crazy moments and missions prior to 2004s Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, they still kept their tradition of kicking things up a couple of notches with every new game. We hadnt had too many stealth-like missions up to this point, so the gameplay of the mission called Black Project is already a departure from the formula. But the real shocker of the mission will only be revealed when we reach our objective after breaching Area 69. The weapon that The Truth sent us in to infiltrate and acquire is a jetpack! And when we pick it up, we actually get to control it and fly out of the base. Rockstar had raised the bar for just how crazy they could get yet again, and were all for it.
A Sweet Present
Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony (2009)
Grand Theft Auto IV still to this day remains some peoples favorite GTA game, even after the astonishing success of Grand Theft Auto V. Theres many good reasons for why that might be, but one of them is probably thanks to the amazing expansions 4 got such as The Ballad of Gay Tony. The ending mission of the expansion is one of the most shocking and visceral missions in GTA, where Luis is tricked and led onto a rooftop by Ray Bulgarin. Hes told on the phone to open a present placed there, and it holds the severed head of the cook who previously sold Luis and Gay Tony the diamonds that the whole expansion revolves around. It leads to a rooftop sniper battle in one of the craziest stand-offs in GTA.
Saint Marks Bistro
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004)
Weve already gone over how San Andreas raised the bar; but it actually gets a bit crazier yet. Theres a mission in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas called Saint Marks Bistro, and if youve played Grand Theft Auto III, this is an absolutely mind-blowing moment. Its Rockstars idea of a crossover. In a game with an already impressively large map, CJ is tasked with flying to Liberty City to take out Marco Forelli, a rival mob boss at Marcos Bistro, which should already be a familiar name to GTA III fans. But the game actually quite literally has us go to the airport and pilot the plane, which is something no one couldve ever expected. Its not something we had really seen before on this scale.
Hot Dog Homicide!Grand Theft Auto II (1999)
Just because recent GTA games have been getting crazy, doesnt mean that early GTA games werent crazy themselves. You may have heard of Hot Dog Homicide in Grand Theft Auto II, which is one of the darkest and most brutal GTA missions in the franchises history. Were tasked by the Russian Mafia boss Jerkov to steal a bus and pick up innocent civilians from bus stops in an effort to drive them to a meat processing plant, where we force them to become processed into hot dogs to feed the Russian Mafias troops. Is that not the most outlandish idea youve heard so far in a GTA game? Its certainly crazy!
By the Book
Grand Theft Auto V (2013)
Fast-forward back to Grand Theft Auto V, and you have By the Book. Its considered one of the most controversial missions in the whole series, not only because of its content, but for making you participate in it. It features a long, interactive torture sequence where we as Trevor interrogate an innocent man by waterboarding him with gasoline, pulling out his teeth, and electrocuting him with jumper cables. If youre going for completion, youre gonna be doing each one of the methods to earn the gold medal. Unlike other times where the violence is simply observed, here youre forced into doing it. Did they go too far?
Scarface
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002)
Now for a bit more of a subtle moment. Scarface is arguably the single largest influence and inspiration for Grand Theft Auto, especially the 3D-verse games set in Vice City. And its in this game where we in Apartment 3C can find a bathroom that is an almost perfect replica of the hotel bathroom where Tony Montanas friend, Angel, is brutally dismembered with a chainsaw. Youll find blood splattered all over the bathrooms walls and a chainsaw that we can actually pick up and use. Its one of the only ways to actually get a chainsaw in the game, and its a cool reference to one of the most famous scenes of Scarface. Nows the time to get really crazy!
Aliens
Grand Theft Auto V (2013)
One of the funniest inclusions across Grand Theft Auto games are definitely the aliens. We had always heard of them in prior games through minor rumors such as in San Andreas Area 69. But in Grand Theft Auto V, we get full-blown repeated crazy alien encounters - though its debatable how real they are considering our primary witness is Michael on drugs. One of the most famous easter eggs in the game is the frozen alien that you can find in the prologue mission, but theres even a mission where Michael gets straight up abducted by them.
The Wedding
Grand Theft Auto IV (2008)
Grand Theft Auto IV is a host to many crazy moments, missions, and NPCs, but one of the craziest moments is in one of the final missions, Mr. & Mrs. Bellic. Its the wedding day for Nikos brother Roman, and Mallorie. Its a pretty peaceful and happy mission at first right up until the tragic Kill Bill-esque twist. Theres actually two paths to choose from here, but no matter what, someone close to Niko will die. The wedding gets interrupted by assassins, and depending on your choice either Kate or Roman dies. Its sudden and violent, just when you thought Niko might earn himself a better life, were reminded that he cant.
Body Harvest
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004)
Of all the crazy moments in San Andreas, none of them are quite as crazy as the mission titled Body Harvest. At its core, its totally different from any other mission in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and yet its totally in-line with Rockstars goofy mission writing. Of course, this mission is given to us by yet again The Truth. CJ is tasked with stealing a combine harvester, not at all meant for combat. As you steal it youll be running people over with it to escape, effectively harvesting them! Instead of what would normally be grass and plant-matter going out of the back of the harvester, its blood and body parts! Its totally in character for Rockstar, and its one of the craziest moments in the series.
