Top 10 Video Game Power-Ups

Special abilities and weapon upgrades are a major staple of gaming. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’ll be taking a look at the Top 10 video game power-ups.

Number 10: Oil Slick (Spyhunter)

Most of us play racing games because we don’t own awesome spy cars. From all of the racing games out there, there’s one particular standout power-up that would make James Bond proud. That of course is the oil slick from Spyhunter.

Number 9: On Fire (NBA Jam)

Taking sports terminology literally is NBA Jam’s ability to be on fire. All it takes is three shots in a row by the same player, and you’ll become more accurate, while having unlimited turbo. Essentially, this power-up rewards you for being awesome by making you even more awesome!

Number 8: Bottled Fairy (The Legend of Zelda)

Link can be one cruel adventurer! In this case, he kidnaps fairies by placing them in bottles to restore his health, or have them bring him back from the dead.

Number 7: Power Pellets (Pac-Man)

Those pesky ghosts are always out to stop Pac-Man from stuffing his face. However, the yellow muncher can eat a power-pellet to not only become invincible, but also eat Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde!

Number 6: Starman (Mario Bros. Series)

Not only does the Starman temporarily make Mario and his brother invincible, but it also made players wicked fast in Mario Kart, and able to do Ninja flips in Mario 3. That’s just badass.

Number 5: Screw Attack (Metroid)

Samus Aran is an intergalactic bounty hunter with a strong constitution. This is demonstrated by her ability to perform the Screw Attack without yakking in her spacesuit! This power-up enables Samus’ to morph into a spinning ball of destructive energy that is invincible while in the air.

Number 4: Hammer (Donkey Kong)

Donkey Kong used to be a bad guy with a love for hurling barrels down a construction site. These could really stump you, that is until you pick up the hammer and plow your way forward!

Number 3: Potion (Gauntlet Series)

Arcade action filled with never-ending waves of enemies requires something capable of mass destruction. The answer is the enemy-decimating potion from Gauntlet Legends. Just use it and watch all your troubles disappear.

Number 2: Spread Gun (Contra)

Contra is nearly impossible to beat. There’s just too many bad guys, the pace is too fast, and there’s bullet-dodging from all angles. Luckily, the spread shot helps you make it through by allowing for multiple takedowns of the most aggressive, intense enemies of all time.

Number 1: Super Mushroom (Mario Bros.)

Possibly the most popular and well-known power-up in history, it causes Mario to double in size, take damage, and reach high up platforms.

Conclusion:

Most video games have some form of power-up ability or item, and while these may be the most useful and memorable, there’s a few more we’d like to pay our respects to. These include Mario Kart’s blue turtle shell that locks on to the lead racer, the opponent shrinking lightning bolt, the flight-enabled raccoon suit from Super Mario Bros. 3, Sonic’s ability to go Supersonic and the Quad Gun from Quake, which quadruples your damage power.
