Message from Jonathan:
I want to let people experience Jamaica the way I have. Savanna-la-Mar and Westmoreland encapsulate my Jamaican experience. Whenever I go back to Jamaica it's like a pilgrimage or a birthright where I get to rediscover and uncover parts of myself. Savanna is warm, chaotic, colourful, rough, noble and stoîc. The song tries to capture and communicate this, and the love I feel for a place I call home.

The Song:
This song means a lot to me, as it really is an introduction to the Album Spaces-In-Between which has been a long time coming for me as an artist. Savanna is the port of entry to a Jamaican experience. I took inspiration from Damian Marley's Welcome to Jamrock and dove into one part of the mosaic Jamaica brings. This musical diversity, spiritual diversity and sociological diversity are all explored on the album as I retrace decades from Jamaican music I was exposed to growing up. It's hard to explain what it means to finally share these songs that have helped me get through so much adversity and struggle. This album signals an artistic and spiritual rebirth -- Savanna is just me stepping into the waters.

The Video:
Shooting this video was mad, between the checkpoints, motorcycle accidents, crashing a drone into electric powerlines on the final shot of the day, we somehow managed to get this video done. A crew of 6 came to Negril with an ambitious plan to shoot a number of music videos across St. James & Westmoreland for cuts on the Spaces-in-Between album. The idea was to shoot on location around Savanna-la-Mar and use additional found footage to position normal life in the Jamaican context. The riddim takes you back to the dancehall sounds of the early 90's and gives you an unpredictable feel in terms of arrangement & structure… we wanted to achieve the same in the video. We juxtaposed shots of the messy normalcy of the market on Great George Street against the natural beauty of the cliffs. We wanted the whole video to take you back -- in a lot of ways, Sav looks and feels frozen in time and still echoes the era that gave us some of the most legendary dancehall music.

Upon entering the market we, of course, spoke to people to explain what we were filming. Man dem asked if I was the DJ. and naturally, they wanted to check my credentials before participating. I performed the song acapella to a small crowd in the market and talked to them about my mom being from Sav how my family was from Carawina (up near Petersfield where Peter Tosh was from). We were shown nuff respect as I performed live in the market with the participation of ladies, children & men contributing and scenes and helping to run logistics for us. Fernando F. Hevia shot and edited the music video. Working with him was exceptional cause he really knew the lay of the land and allowed us to link up with some dancers from Negril and Sav and get some beautiful locations. It was not easy filming this video during the state of emergency in Westmoreland. We were constantly fighting the sun and the rain in blistering July heat. It was the wildest film shoot I've ever done, unlike anything I have ever done.
