#3: “First Man” Drops Brand New Trailer

Dropping a second trailer may seem like one small step, but it’s likely a giant leap for the film in terms of awards buzz. Universal Pictures released a new trailer to director Damien Chazelle’s First Man, which stars Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong, the first person to ever walk on the moon. While the world now knows how the Apollo 11 mission turned out, the trailer does a tremendous job at building the suspense surrounding the dangers the mission faced, and whether or not the astronauts would make it back home alive. The trailer was released shortly after the movie premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where the reception has been brilliant, earning the film an early 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Is Gosling’s performance enough to earn him his first Oscar? Can Chazelle hold on to the best picture trophy this time around? Time will tell. First Man hits theaters October 12th.

#2: HBO Releases First Look of “True Detective” Season 3

HBO is really hoping that third time’s a charm. Fans of the crime drama series have been patiently waiting for any footage of third season in the True Detective franchise, and this week the network delivered. The first teaser trailer was released and if it’s any indication of the show overall, all signs seem to point towards success. Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali plays the lead, detective Wayne Hays who investigates a series of murders that takes place over decades and in three separate time periods. Green Room’s Jeremy Saulnier directed the first two episodes, with Daniel Sackheim and show runner Nic Pizzolato directing the final six. After the season two series paled in comparison to the first, HBO is hoping that season 3 is a smash success. While anticipation is high for the new season, audiences will have to wait months for its premiere, which is set for January 2019.

Before we get to our number one entry, here are a couple new releases:

“Kin” (2018)
“Searching” (2018)

#1: Alec Baldwin Bails on Playing Batman’s Dad in “Joker” Movie

Well, if Batman didn’t already have daddy issues… Alec Baldwin has officially bowed out of the Joaquin Phoenix Joker film, and will no longer be playing Batman’s dad, Thomas Wayne. Only two days after confirming the role, the SNL and 30 Rock star has bowed out, citing scheduling conflicts. The actor told USA TODAY that “I’m no longer doing that movie… I’m sure there are 25 guys who can play that part.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Thomas Wayne character in Todd Phillips’ standalone film would be molded after a 1980s Donald Trump, which makes the news even sadder considering Baldwin’s take on the President on Saturday Night Live. Even with Baldwin leaving, however, the cast remains stacked, with Phoenix, Robert De Niro and Zazie Beetz all confirmed. Still no word on a release date for the film, so it would seem Warner Bros. has a lot of time to find a replacement.
