The singer is learning French and Spanish! The Canadian singer is making great strides in bridging the gap between him and his French and Spanish speaking fans. Mendes is in the process of learning both languages and hopes that he will one day be able to break down even more language barriers. Did you know that he taught himself guitar? When Shawn Mendes was gifted his first guitar at 15 there was one problem: he didn't know how to play! Thankfully for him, it was nothing a little practice and YouTube couldn't fix. The future pop star would spend five hours a day practicing and watching instructional videos on the web while learning the ins and outs of his new instrument. He's also very philanthropic! n 2014, he spearheaded the “Notes from Shawn” campaign, which encouraged people to leave positive messages in random locations as a way of combating depression and self-harm. And he didn't stop there. In 2015 Mendes helped raise $25,000 to build a school in Ghana.
