Instead of having an iron prison floating in the middle of the ocean, far from any earth that earthbenders could use to escape or overpower the guards, earthbenders are being held captive while surrounded by the one thing that makes them all-powerful. For some reason, no one seems to think, "maybe we should stand up for ourselves"

Mismatching cast nationalities

We get M Knight Shyamalan diversifying the cast and including East Indian actors but the source material already has a great variety of cultures to portray in film. Replacing the Fire Nation's Japanese sources doesn't really make sense, and whitewashing the water tribes adds insult to injury

The bending sequences

Why does it take nearly a whole minute of dancing around for any bending to occur? And why does it take 5 earthbenders to summon a simple pebble off the ground- when in the cartoon someone like Toph or Bumi could demonstrate impressive feats in earthbending. Not to mention that firebenders needed a source of fire to bend from.

Shyamalan's idea to honor the original Asian pronunciation of character names probably seemed like a good idea at the time but at this point everyone already had grown used to the cartoon's pronunciation and this made it all the more off putting

It's understandable that the movie doesn't have time to do the full storyline justice, but the entire plot seems rushed without time for any real subplot to develop. Condensing major storylines shortchanges all of them.

Sokka not being funny

For many fans Sokka is the best character in the series, always funny and having great character development, from being a cocky funny kid to an awesome and responsible funny young adult. In the movie he barely gets any lines, and a couple of forced and unfunny jokes.
Did Zuko even have a scar in the movie? What is supposed to be one of his defining physical attributes, something that defines his character as everytime he sees the scar he is reminded of the day he was banished from the Fire Kingdom was instead hardly noticeable in the movie, and only addressed for about 2 minutes.

Aang's avatar state water monster becomes a giant wave
Instead of Aang tapping into his Avatar State and becoming the giant water monster to completely wipe out the Fire Nation's navy and save the Northern Water Tribe, he makes a giant wave which causes every single Fire Nation ship to just turn around and go home. It truly disappoints by robbing fans of an awesome scene, one of the best in the cartoon

Firebenders can't make fire?

For no apparent reason M Knight Shyamalan greatly depowered firebenders by taking away their ability to produce fire, instead they can only bend already existing fire. This is a drastic change from the cartoon that also means the movie has to bend over backwards making sure fire is always available and makes them much less imposing.
Princess Yue is supposed to be Sokka's first great love. Beautiful, kind, and intelligent, but promised to someone else. It's great drama as the two slowly start to fall for one another, but can't do anything about it. Her sacrifice to become the moon spirit is even more heartbreaking and is something that affects Sokka's development but instead in
