Not by choice, in the anime, he left Death Meister Academy in order to stop being Medusa 's mole, though Maka has to convince her or him otherwise. Crona disappears just after being discovered, turning out to have been called back by Medusa to her lair. Eventually, Crona kills Medusa, but (as Medusa planned)

His intention of restoring Cybertron was indeed legitimate. Unfortunately, he decided to defect to the Decepticons, and presumably use them, as well as launch a massive invasion on Earth with the intention of enslave humanity in order to do so.

Even when he begins manipulating and betraying some of the members, it takes them a while to figure it out. Even after he's exposed, he still thinks they're friends. He does eventually do a Heel%u2013Face Turn a good two books later, but he had to earn everyone's trust and forgiveness again because of said betrayal

e. Although he is not evil and never becomes evil, he got cocky to the point where XANA succeeded in taking him over at the start of the next season. The surprise factor was actually legitimate, because the build-up was so long.

Firefly ends up betraying the team to Cobra. He honestly likes the Joes and has saved him and Stone several times, but he that he still has the potential to come around. Firefly's actions toward Stone at series' end give slight justifications to Stone's beliefs.
