On the heels of her breakout success on Saturday Night Live, Kristen Wiig started to make the leap to the big screen in comedies like Despicable Me 2, Ghostbusters, and Bridesmaids, the latter of which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. In recent years, we’ve also see Wiig take on a few unexpected roles in more dramatic projects such as The Martian and mother!. Wiig may be entering uncharted territory once again as the villain in Wonder Woman 2.
According to Deadline Hollywood, Wiig is in talks to play Cheetah in the superhero sequel, which will see Gal Gadot reprise her role as Diana Prince with director Patty Jenkins getting back behind the camera. There have been a few incarnations of Cheetah over the years, but her alter ego in the film is Barbara Ann Minerva, a British anthropologist. That Hashtag Show also reported that Oscar-winner Emma Stone of La La Land was offered the role, but turned it down. Whoever ultimately lands the part, it remains unclear if Cheetah would be the movie’s main villain or a side baddie.
Outside of the comics, Cheetah has popped up in various DC animated projects, including the 2009 direct-to-DVD Wonder Woman movie. Perhaps her most memorable appearance was in the Justice League animated series where she was voiced by Broadway star Sheryl Lee Ralph. Deadpool actress Morena Baccarin also lent her voice to the character on Batman: The Brave and the Bold. While Cheetah can be an intimidating villain, she can also be quite colorful and fun, which might make Wiig an ideal fit for the role.
Taking place in the 1980s during the Cold War, Wonder Woman 2 is set to come out on November 1, 2019.
