They’re No Psycho Mantis, But They’ll Do!
We could go on and on about just how amazing Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear series is. The narratives, the characters, the historical context, its philosophies surrounding conflict and war, everything in this series is top tier. But we’re not here to get into the heavy handed stuff, we’re here to talk about just how insane its boss battles are. Specifically, the bosses that stand in the shadows of their more iconic counterparts.
Not every confrontation can be as emotionally charged as the one against The Boss, nor can they be as fun as the final clash against Senator Armstrong. That being said, its high time these bosses were given the respect they deserve. After all, they’re all still a cog in the masterful machine that is Metal Gear!Â
Fair warning, there are SPOILERS AHEAD!
#3: The Ladder
“Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater” (2004)
Okay, it’s technically not a boss fight, but it might as well have been! You keep climbing and climbing this thing with no end in sight, to the point that the damn theme song kicks in to remind you that you are indeed still playing Snake Eater! Well played Kojima.
#2: Fatman
“Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty” (2001)
Granted we were still in shock that we were going to play the rest of the game as Raiden, so an obese terrorist on roller skates just added to our confusion. In hindsight, this boss fight was actually pretty engaging. For a guy his size, Fatman was able to dash around the stage with incredible speed, not to mention layer on the damage at a rather rapid rate. As if that wasn’t enough, we also had to go about diffusing bombs while avoiding his gunfire. Honestly, by the time the battle was finished we were practically sweating bullets.
#1: The Beauty and the Beast Unit
“Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” (2008)
Yeah, we’re slightly cheating by banding these gals together, but we think its fair given how they are all essentially Metal Gear’s most lethal tribute act. Not only do the likes of Screaming Mantis, Crying Wolf, Laughing Octopus and Raging Raven have some of the most messed up backstories in the franchise, but all their abilities and weapons are inspired by the previous games’ bosses. However, each battle against them is still unique in its own way, not to mention frantic! Trust us, you don’t want to get on the wrong side of these beauties.
