From Tomb Raider to Rampage, Hollywood has several movies lined up that will hopefully break the video game movie curse. One of the most buzz-worthy is Paramount’s take on Sonic the Hedgehog.
The Blue Blur has certainly had his ups and downs, not only in terms of video games, but in other media as well. On the small screen, Sega’s mascot inspired several animated shows, many of which have ranged from forgettable to insanely over-the-top. The short-lived Sonic SatAM arguably set a gold standard for all future video game adaptations, though, delivering a surprisingly dark, thoughtful, engaging experience. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that this Sonic movie can achieve a similar effect on an even larger scale. Here are three things you need to know about Sonic’s big screen adventure.
3. It’s Coming Out in 2019
Paramount has their Sonic movie scheduled to come out on November 15, 2019. Coincidentally, the film is hitting theaters twenty years after the U.S. release of Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie, an anime that originally premiered in Japan as a OVA series. Back in 1999, many Sega fans figured that this English-dubbed, direct-to-video film would be the closest Sonic ever got to the cinematic treatment. Between this film and his cameo in Wreck-It Ralph, though, Sonic’s on his way to becoming a certified movie star.
2. It’s A Live-Action/Animation Hybrid
Rather than taking the animated route, this Sonic film will combine live-action and CGI. The question is if Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails will retain their classic designs or will they get the Michael Bay Ninja Turtles treatment?
1. The Director of Deadpool Is Involved
Tim Miller, who brought Deadpool to the big screen, will act as an executive producer on the Sonic film. Miller previously collaborated with director Jeff Fowler on several other projects at Blur Studio, including the Oscar-nominated animated short, Gopher Broke. Sounds like a fitting match, seeing how Sonic’s love of chili dogs is only rivaled by Deadpool’s fondness of chimichangas.
