5 Video Game Movies Currently In Development

While there have been a few successful movies with a video game theme (Wreck-It Ralph, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), we’ve yet to get a truly solid film adaption of a beloved video game. Hollywood isn’t showing any signs of giving up, however. Within the next couple months, we’ll be getting a Tomb Raider reboot with Alicia Vikander and Rampage with Dwayne Johnson. Even if those don’t break the video game movie curse, there are a few other projects in development that just might.

We’re keeping our fingers crossed that at least one of these five upcoming films will finally get it right.

5. Five Nights at Freddy’s

The hit indie horror game series is coming to the big screen via Blumhouse Productions, the same studio that brought us Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and Get Out. It was recently announced that Chris Columbus would direct and write the picture. Columbus seems like an inspired choice, as he previously mixed comedy and horror in Gremlins.

4. Dragon’s Lair: The Movie

With Don Bluth of An American Tail and The Land Before Time at the helm, the original Dragon’s Lair arcade game already played like an interactive movie. So Dirk the Daring and Princess Daphne appear perfectly tailored for a feature-length adventure. We’re so excited that Bluth and Gary Goldman could raise the funding for this one.

3. Minecraft

Telltale Games and Mojang already injected a narrative into the Minecraft universe with Story Mode. Now directors Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) and Rob McElhenney (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) are bringing the blocky world to the silver screen with a script by Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman). Coming out on May 24, 2019, this could either be the most pleasant surprise since The Lego Movie or the biggest sellout since The Emoji Movie.

2. Detective Pikachu

For years fans have wanted to see a live-action Pokemon movie and now it’s finally happening… well, sort of. Hitting theaters on May 10, 2019, Detective Pikachu is a mystery with Ryan Reynolds providing the voice of Pikachu. Will it be wonderfully weird or just… weird?

1. Untitled Mario Movie

Over two decades after that abysmal live-action flick, Mario is taking another stab at movie stardom with some help from Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment (Despicable Me, Minions). If you think about it, this collaboration is actually quite fitting. The Minions share an undeniable resemblance to the Raving Rabbids, who made their debut four years before the first Despicable Me. In 2017, we got Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. Now that we’re essentially getting Mario + Minions, everything has come full circle.
