We’re Off To Never Never Land
The RPG Maker series may not have changed the landscape of gaming, but it certainly provided a platform that allowed aspiring developers to try their hand. Heck, some of the results ended up having such amazing production value that they went on to become commercial successes. They may seem primitive on first glance when compared to AAA games, but there can be no denying just how exquisite the likes of To the Moon, The Witch’s House, Mad Father and Yume Nikki are. As time has gone on, both the engine and overall attitude towards these titles have evolved, to the point where sequels are met with as much expectation as mainstream games.
Now it seems one of these modern classics is branching out into sequel territory, as according to an article on PC Gamer, the hauntingly potent Yume Nikki has a new project in the works, one that looks to inspire just as much dread as its predecessor.
On the heels of Yume Nikki’s recent Steam release, publisher AGM Playism is teasing Yume Nikki: Dream Diary, believed to be a follow-up game of some sort, with two strange trailers and a vague countdown site.
Elsewhere, details are scarce. The countdown site was announced in a post to Yume Nikki’s Steam community hub which calls Dream Diary “the next Yume Nikki project” but says nothing else. It’s still unclear whether it’s a direct sequel, or indeed if creator Kikiyama has a hand in its creation.
At the very least, it seems Madotsuki will play some role in Dream Diary. She’s featured on the countdown site, after all, and the face and silhouette which briefly appears in the teaser trailers looks somewhat like her.
Will it manage to match the unexpected success of the original? After all, that kind of fear is hard to replicate even with a superior version of RPG Maker on hand.
