VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton
Two beautiful countries, one winner! Welcome to WatchMojo, and in this installment of Versus we'll be putting Greece and Italy head to head to decide which is the titan of Mediterranean travel. Our video will include categories like Natural Beauty, Food, Accessibility & Cost, and more!

Round 1: Food

When it comes to global gastronomic giants, few countries stand out like Greece OR Italy - both have gifted the world with considerable culinary delights.

Just picture it: sun-drenched landscapes, olives, and the aroma of grilled meats. Iconic Greek dishes like souvlaki and moussaka are loved all around the world. But it’s not just about the meat! The hallmark of Greek cuisine lies in its use of fresh ingredients. Greek salads, combining feta cheese, olives, and fresh veggies, are also a global favorite. Let’s not forget tzatziki, the creamy yogurt-based sauce that elevates many a dish. And for those with a sweet tooth? Baklava’s layers of filo pastry, nuts, and honey are simply irresistible.

The magic of Italian cuisine is that each region, from Lombardy in the north to Sicily in the south, offers dishes that tantalize the taste buds. Pizza from Naples, risotto from Milan, and gelato make Italian cuisine hard to resist. Then there’s the culinary art that is pasta - with varieties like spaghetti, tagliatelle, and penne, each serving as a canvas for sauces ranging from bolognese to carbonara. Italian chefs are maestros at marrying simple ingredients to produce food symphonies. The use of olive oil, cheeses like Parmesan and Mozzarella, and wines from regions like Tuscany and Piedmont give Italian dishes their iconic taste and texture.

Both countries view food as not just a meal, but a reflection of their rich heritage and traditions. While Greece offers aromatic, fresh, and often lighter fare, Italy allures with its creamy pastas and desserts. Ultimately though … pizza! How can we argue with PIZZA? Come on guys.

WINNER: Greece 0 / Italy 1

Round 2: Natural Beauty

With both Mediterranean countries renowned for their iconic landscapes and seascapes, deciding which takes the crown for natural beauty is quite the dilemma.

Greece boasts some of the most idyllic islands in the world. From the whitewashed buildings of Santorini, perched atop volcanic cliffs, to the turquoise waters of Kefalonia, the Greek islands offer a piece of paradise for every traveler. Meanwhile, the rugged mountains and verdant plains of the Peloponnese peninsula seem to tell tales of ancient wars and legendary cities. The Vikos Gorge in the Pindus Mountains, among the world's deepest, embodies the country’s raw beauty. Greece’s landscapes feel like they’ve been pulled straight out of myths and legends.

Italy, on the other hand, offers a geographical potpourri, ranging from the Alps in the north to the sun-kissed beaches of the Amalfi Coast. The rolling hills of Tuscany, painted with vineyards and dotted with historic villas, evoke a romance and charm that few places can rival. The Italian lakes, especially Lake Como and Lake Garda, shimmer amidst majestic mountains and offer views that can rejuvenate the soul. And who can overlook the volcanic landscapes of Sicily with mighty Mount Etna puffing away? Italy’s diverse topography promises a plethora of visual treats.

Italy’s varied landscapes make a compelling case. But it is VERY hard to argue with Greece’s island idylls! Sure, it’s hard to escape the crowds in Santorini, but standing on the rim of that caldera, looking out over the blue Mediterranean Sea is genuinely an awesome experience! Greece’s diverse and breathtaking islands carry it to victory in this round.

WINNER: Greece 1 / Italy 1

Round 3: Historical Sites

For history buffs, Greece and Italy beckon with ancient ruins and tales as old as time. But which offers a deeper connection to the past?

The land of gods, warriors, and scholars, Greece is the fountainhead of Western philosophy and democracy. It’s where mighty heroes of Homer's epics trod and where philosophers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle laid the foundations for much of human thought. The architectural splendors of the Parthenon in Athens and the Oracle at Delphi stand testament to its ancient glory. So too does the ancient theater of Epidaurus, and Knossos on Crete. Then there are the many medieval wonders to marvel at, such as the majestic monasteries of Meteora - precariously balanced on natural sandstone pillars. Talk about being spoiled for choice.

Italy also boasts a myriad of ancient sites to transport visitors through time. Rome's Colosseum stands as a symbol of the Roman Empire's might, while nearby, the Roman Forum reveals tales of ancient urban life. Pompeii, preserved by Vesuvius's ashes, offers a snapshot of daily Roman existence. To the north, the Leaning Tower of Pisa showcases medieval architectural ambition. Italy's historic sites, spanning amphitheaters to ancient streets, are a testament to its influence on Western culture and a journey through a multifaceted past.

Both countries offer an unforgettable historical odyssey into bygone eras. The Colosseum certainly puts up a hell of a fight. So does Pompeii! But it’s the Parthenon and Meteora that most spark our imaginations - Greece takes this one.

WINNER: Greece 2 / Italy 1

Round 4: Art & Culture

Sure, BOTH countries have bestowed upon the world a rich legacy of art, philosophy, and architecture. But in our minds, there’s one winner …

While its ancient ruins often steal the limelight, Greece's art and culture are multifaceted. Modern Greek art, showcased in numerous galleries around Athens, stands out with its fusion of traditional motifs and contemporary techniques. Greece is also a land of festivals, from the Athens–Epidaurus Festival celebrating theater to Thessaloniki's renowned Film Festival. Greek music, with its evocative rembetiko tunes and vibrant dances like the sirtaki, offers another layer of cultural immersion. Literature is a living tradition here, with contemporary authors keeping alive the legacy of greats like Homer.

The home of the Renaissance, Italy is an art aficionado’s dream. In Florence, Milan, and Vatican City, visitors can glory in the masterpieces of Leonardo, Michelangelo, Botticeli, and many more. Italy's vibrant street art, particularly in cities like Rome and Naples, offers a juxtaposition of the ancient and contemporary. Additionally, Italy is a hub for world-class fashion, film, and opera. Milan's Fashion Week and the Venice Film Festival are testament to the nation's modern cultural prowess. From the melodic arias in La Scala, Milan's famous opera house, to the intimate trattorias where folk music is still alive, Italy weaves a rich cultural tapestry.

In the end, we’re really comparing two masterpieces here, both with layers of depth, beauty, and history. But for its role in the Renaissance, proudly on display in its galleries and museums, we’re giving this one to Italy.

WINNER: Greece 2 / Italy 2

Round 5: Accessibility & Cost

So far, our contenders are neck and neck! So here’s the deciding round: ease of travel!

Greece’s main airports in Athens and Thessaloniki, although not as extensive as some European hubs, allow travelers to access both its storied mainland and diverse islands. While Greece's mainland infrastructure is commendable, island-hopping often depends on ferry schedules, which, though picturesque, can elongate travel times. Yet, Greece's allure lies in its more wallet-friendly nature, especially when venturing beyond the main tourist traps. The general ease of travel can be smooth, but it's advantageous to familiarize oneself with ferry timings and perhaps pick up a few Greek phrases for more remote areas.

Major international airports in cities such as Rome, Milan, and Venice make Italy a common entry point to Europe, with a plethora of flight options. Italy's pride in its infrastructure shines through its impressive train network, making intercity travel, especially with the high-speed trains, a breeze. However, this comes at a cost, with Italy being generally pricier than Greece, especially in hotspots like Venice or Florence. But the ease of travel in Italy is somewhat unmatched, given its longstanding prominence in the global tourism scene, ensuring that most travelers can navigate the country with minimal fuss.

To a degree, this one comes down to cost versus convenience. But the price difference isn’t huge - whereas the difference in their transportation networks is notable. While Greece offers an enchanting adventure on a budget, Italy promises seamless travel through its iconic cities and landscapes, and takes this final round.
