Let’s Play Countdown - Episode 4 - Surgeon Simulator

Welcome to Watchmojo’s Let’s Play Countdown, where we count down our favourite Let’s Play videos in a specific category. Today we’re getting our hands dirty with our picks for the Top 5 Surgeon Simulator videos. We’re looking at the original version of the game, and all of its gruesome updates. If there was ever a game that was made for Let’s Players to hilariously fail, it’s this one. I hope you’ve got a strong stomach.

#5: Rage Quit - Surgeon Simulator 2013

Channel: Rooster Teeth

As if to prove that we don’t always pick the most popular video for our #1 pick, today we’re starting off our countdown with a clip that has the most views that we’ll see today - Rooster Teeth’s Gavin & Michael’s best attempt at open-heart surgery.

Right off the bat you’ll notice that the guys don’t quite exemplify the calm restraint you’d hope to see in a doctor - they’re practically at each other’s throats before the clip even starts.* The idea here is that the hosts are playing “Cooperatively” - one person is controlling the ‘arm’ of the surgeon, and the other is controlling the ‘fingers’. I say this all with such heavily emphasized airquotes because it soon becomes clear that cooperation is really not what either player is really going for here. Of course, this game is more about failure than success, so this works out just fine.

Pro Tip for aspiring transplant surgeons: always keep track of the transplant organs.
Hey, at least they learn from their mistakes, right?

#4:"WORST EYE SURGERY" - Co-Op- Surgeon Simulator: A&E Anniversary Edition

Channel: iHasCupquake

From 2 players seemingly trying to undermine their own progress, we’re shifting gears now to a couple that’s actually trying their darndest to work together. That’s not to say that CupQuake and her husband are any more successful and create any less disastrous results, buuuuut it’s cute to see them try.

Here, instead of both controlling a single arm, each player now as their own arm to control by themselves. This does create some some rather confusing right-left reversal, but hey, accurate anatomy has never been touted as this game’s strong suit.

For me, the highlight of this surgery happens early on, as the couple tries to remove the goggles the patient is wearing so they can begin the surgery proper - a procedure which involves a surprisingly large amount of hardware.* Other highlights include them both poking at the patient’s face with scalpels … which ends about the way you’d expect it would.

To their credit, much like almost all of the videos we’ll see today, they actually complete the surgery - but only after pricking themselves accidentally with a needle, so they’re tripping balls as they do it.

#3: LIKE A SURGEON (Game Bang)

Channel: Smosh Games

We saw 2 players working against each other, and then we saw 2 players trying to work together, but now we move onto 6 people trying to...well... I’m not really sure what they’re doing here. Actually that’s not entirely true. Here, the gang from Smosh “Game Bang” crew are doing a challenge - as they are wont to do: whoever can’t perform a heart surgery (in-game of course), has to eat something gross that *sorta* looks like a heart… I guess.

After watching a heck of a lot of these videos, I gotta say that the amazing part about this clip is how dextrous the first player is. I mean, it’s still Surgeon Simulator so it’s not exactly smooth, but he essentially succeeds in every action he attempts - which for this game is definitely pretty commendable. Well, he succeeds at first, cuz it all falls apart in the end.

That’s not to say that his buddies are any better.

So, in the end, instead of having a single loser like they intended, they have four losers who’ve got to eat the disgusting concoction they’ve prepared. As if the game by itself wasn’t gross enough

#2: Nerd³ Plays... Surgeon Simulator 2013: Steam Version

Channel: OfficialNerdCubed

For our runner up, we finally have an entry that is skilled at the game. Just kidding, he’s just as bad as everyone else, really, but at least he seems a bit more organized about the whole thing.

What’s great about this particular Let’s Play is the fact that many of the actions and reactions all seem a bit more deliberate: it’s less about screwing up and yelling about it, and more about doing funny things and joking about them in real time. This also, thankfully, lowers the overall volume in the delivery, which is always welcome to these tired old ears of mine…

The more I think about it, I’d say that this video is one of the funniest ones out there because the host is genuinely funny - so the laughs come from what he’s actually saying and not just how he’s saying it.

All praise aside though, as someone’s who’s actually had a kidney transplant in real life this does make me feel a bit uneasy - but I’m comforted by the fact that my doctors at the very least probably used both hands…**
Of course, it could be worse. At least I didn’t get brain surgery…

#1: Surgeon Simulator 2013 Space Update (ALIEN SURGERY) | MOST DRAMATIC ENDING EVER

Channel: Markiplier

Playing the Space Update to the original Surgeon Simulator, Markiplier does his very best to perform a transplant on a very unlucky group of beings - some of them human, some of them not so human. If you thought the physics in the game were “floaty” before, wait until you see em’ in super low gravity.

If you’ve seen Markiplier’s videos before, you know what to expect here: high volume commentary, most of which is delivered in a wide variety of manic voices.** Anyway, once he masters human surgery in space, we get to the good stuff - ALIEN surgery...IN SPACE!

Fun fact - the organ he’s transplanting in the last segment is called a Pewdsball, named after famed YouTuber PewDiePie. Actually, all of the alien organs you can transplant in this update are named after YouTubers, including one named after Nerd-cubed and another after Gavin from Rooster Teeth, both of whom we saw earlier. Like I said, the game was practically designed for these videos.

So, I know it’s given away right there in the title, but the absolute best part of this playthrough is the dramatic conclusion. Basically, you lose in Surgeon Simulator if your patient runs out of blood. So, you can see that this unfortunate critter is down to his last pint by the time Markiplier manages a buzzerbeater, and it’s nothing short of a slam dunk - literally.

That’s it for our countdown, we hope you learned a few things about the human anatomy! Be sure to let us know what other Let’s Play videos we should cover in future episodes, and for more great content published every day, be sure to subscribe to Watchmojo.com.
