WMMyths: Sex

Making love, getting laid, hooking up, screwing, shagging, rumpy-pumpy or coitus. Whatever words you use to describe it, make sure you don’t fall for these common misconceptions! Welcome to WatchMojo's Top 5 Myths, the series that finds the biggest myths people actually believe and dispels them one by one. In today’s instalment, we're counting down the top 5 myths about sex.

#5: Tantric Sex is One Big Orgasm

Tantric sex has always been something that most of us know little about, but are curious to learn more. As an ancient Hindu practice designed to channel sexual energy and create greater intimacy, it encourages couples to spend more time making each other feel great and less time focusing on ‘finishing off’. While successful tantric sex is said to inspire especially intense orgasms, the myth also says that those orgasms are incredibly lengthy affairs.
Yes, these techniques do generally prolong sex, but they don’t turn the actual orgasm into some kind of super-charged, hour-long experience. The climax is still just a matter of seconds - between 6 and 20 on average - no matter what the likes of Sting may have famously implied.
That’s not to say that marathon orgasms are entirely unheard of though; a condition known as Persistent Sexual Arousal Syndrome has been known to trigger up to hour-long peaks – and trust us, it’s nowhere near as pleasurable as it sounds.

#4: Male and Female Sexual Peaks are out of Sync

It has to be one of the most frustrating sex myths out there. The idea that men and women are doomed to experience sexual peaks at different points of their lives - tragically out of sync with one another. Oh woe are we! But fear not, because there is no hard rule that says it has to be that way. Sure, men’s testosterone levels do peak aged around 18, which means that the male horn may be especially rampant at this time.
However, you don’t necessarily need to be jacked up on hormones to have the best sex of your life. From a female perspective, there is actually no set peak. It’s often thought that women only really enjoy sex aged 30 or over, by which time men have supposedly gone off the idea. But the female libido seems to fluctuate, to no predictable pattern. Essentially, everyone has highs and lows, times when they’re turned on and turned off. Ideally, but not always, couples peak together, and dip as infrequently as possible!

#3: The Hymen Rips When Losing Virginity

The hymen, a membrane which forms part of the woman’s vulva, is often associated with female virginity. The belief is that if the membrane is intact, the woman has yet to have sexual intercourse, whereas when she has sex for the first time the hymen is torn in the process.
While that notion is true in some cases, the relationship between sex and the hymen is much more ambiguous. The membrane can tear as a consequence of other activities, including exercise like cycling or horse-riding, as well as medical examinations or masturbation – to link a lack of hymen solely to sexual experience is merely an assumption.
However, in some countries, traditional belief prompts the disturbing practice of virginity testing, in which a woman must prove her hymen is intact. As a result, some women undergo hymenorrhaphy reconstruction surgery to restore their so-called ‘virginal’ appearance. But the majority of doctors still believe the hymen has little to no physiological function. While someone who has never had sex can tear their hymen regardless, it’s also possible that someone with years of sexual experience could still have their hymen unchanged. Don’t believe the Hymen Hoax!

#2: Men Can’t Multiple

We’ve all been told that men orgasm once, roll over and then go to sleep. Unlike women who are capable of orgasmic waves and multiple climaxes, men have one shot, one opportunity to reach the peak of their pleasures. At least that’s what our runner-up myth would have us believe. But in fact, multiple orgasms are a man’s game too - though the ability to do so doesn’t usually come naturally. It’s a learned skill, but one that much of the male population might just be interested in investing a little bit of time toward! By mastering the aforementioned tantric techniques, and identifying a difference between orgasm and ejaculation, men can exercise control when they bust-a-nut. And male multiple-ing isn’t as rare as you might think; around 12% of men are said to be enjoying it!

#1: You Can’t Get Pregnant During Your Period

We finish with the fundamental, biological reason for sex – reproduction. According to many misplaced beliefs, baby-making is impossible whenever a woman is on her period; but if you believe that, then you could potentially be setting yourself up for a shock. Sperm can live inside the body for up to week, so even if you ‘get lucky’ during the first days of menstruation, there’s a slim possibility that his swimmers will still be hanging around come ovulation.
It’s a rare occurrence but not unheard of, and essentially results in conception occurring days after the actual deed was done. So remember, having sex even during a period could still bring about a positive pregnancy test result, making unsuspecting parents of the both of you! Best of Luck!
