#10: Carl Grimes
From wimp to warrior, since Season 2 of “The Walking Dead,” Carl has sometimes proven even tougher than his old man, Rick. He’s a dead shot with the silencer pistol and a cunning kill even without it. Carl’s upbringing has also been a central arc of the series, with Rick, Lori and Shane’s narratives often converged around it, helping them to focus on life beyond survival and hope for the future. Though he was disliked by many initially, Carl has certainly grown a lot over the seasons; going from weakling to sociopath to boy king and overprotective older bro. But through it all, he’s still a kid with a big heart.

The conscience of the group, Dale acts as a moral compass, a wise sage and defender of justice. Despite growing tensions, he’s diplomatic in brokering relations between Hershel’s house and the survivors. In “Judge, Jury, and Executioner,” his goodness and wisdom truly shine through; while discussing what to do with an outsider, Dale demonstrates that he’s not afraid to take matters into his own hands, or tell you what he thinks, when he truly believes in something.

As a veterinarian, he’s the closest the group’s got to a house physician. And though he’s fallen off the saddle and into the bottle in the past, Hershel is also their whiskey priest. Thanks to his dedication to humanity and greatness in the face of adversity, Hershel has touched many members of the group and he’s also become a spiritual survivor in a world of walking corpses. You’d have to be if you were the only known survivor of a zombie bite that caused you to lose your leg.

The Governor has brought devastation and tragedy at nuclear levels. He’s tortured Glenn and Maggie, killed several survivors, laid waste to the prison and beat Rick to a living pulp. Indeed, in “The Walking Dead” apocalypse, the Governor may possibly be the deadliest threat out there.

He’s the brains and courage of the group. This speedy pizza delivery boy has risen above and beyond the challenges that have come his way while trying to survive the walking dead. Often first to volunteer for dangerous missions, Glenn went from shortstop geek to alpha male over the course of the series. In impossible situations, his keen mind helps him find ways to even the odds - and beat them too. To top things off, he also captured the heart of Maggie Greene; in the end of days, the geeks shall inherit the earth!
