Hey Vsauce, Mojo here. Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 Vsauce Videos. For this list, we’re ranking these pop science videos based on their popularity and general quality. Spoiler alert: we'll be discussing answers to the questions they pose!

#10: “If”

Also in:

Top 10 Best Game Theorist Videos

(2013) What will the weather be like in an hour or two? Where will the moon be in a week? When exactly will we die? What will happen when the apocalypse comes? In classic Vsauce style, our host and guru Michael Stevens discusses the different kinds of things that we can predict, and makes an extremely compelling commentary about the ways in which our forays into the border of the unknown - space, science, and the future - can alleviate the ever-looming dread of what lies beyond. The Aristocrats!

#9: “Is Anything Real?”

Also in:

Do We Live In The Real World? | Original Documentary | Unveiled

(2013) Are you really watching this WatchMojo video? If your answer is yes, you may want to check out this one. In eleven short minutes Michael explores various scientific, philosophical, and psychological perspectives to the question: is anything real? Heavy, maaaan. He ties these fields together by showing ways in which they all run up against the same problem: that our knowledge is inherently limited. As Vsauce fans are accustomed to, Michael unexpectedly turns this problem on its head. The real value is not in the content of the answers behind the questions, but the activity of trying to answer them in the first place. Of course, that’s exactly what someone whose job it is to answer these questions would say...

#8: “What Does Human Taste Like?”

Also in:

Top 20 Best Deepfake Videos

(2014) Is anyone surprised that Vsauce would take a bite out of a rich and flavorful topic like cannibalism? This video takes a fascinating look at the history, culture, and science behind eating people. Of course, it wouldn’t be a proper Vsauce video without exploring the other question in the title: what humans are drawn to in terms of taste and flavour. These broad questions actually collide, in Michael’s jarring observation that we consume ourselves. Turns out, we naturally swallow and digest our own weight’s worth of dead cells, mucus and other bodily matter about every three months. Yum!

#7: “Travel INSIDE A Black Hole”

Also in:

What If We Could Time Travel?

(2012) This video isn’t just any old YouTube explainer about event horizons and gravitational lensing. In this entry, Vsauce knocks the topic of black holes out of the park. Beginning with a useful comparison of how densely well-known objects would have to be compressed to form a black hole - the earth would have to squeeze into the size of a peanut - Michael wastes no time diving into the mind-boggling science behind black holes and how we would perceive them. Highlights include what a black hole would look like up close, what it would look like from the inside, and an explanation about how each and every one of us are at the center of the universe.

#6: “What Color Is A Mirror?”

Also in:

10 Creepiest Videos Linked to True Crime

(2012) Number six on this list, but number one on our yet-to-be-released “Top 10 Vsauce Puns” list, you knew the video about colors would be packed full of the cringiest puns imaginable. This entry delves into the often wondered-about question: what color is a mirror? In a bit of a twist, the answer is surprisingly simple: mirrors best reflect green light, so they are green. Michael goes on to discuss the reasons behind various languages having a shared root for the words black and white, as well as an explanation about what causes blue eyes. A wonderfully information-packed Vsauce entry.

#5: “What's the Most Dangerous place on Earth?”

Also in:

Was a K2 Civilization On Earth Before Us? | Unveiled

(2013) Fear plays an important role in our survival instincts; experts think it is an adaptive trait that helps protect us from harm. It seems like no one told that to the fine folks at Vsauce, however, who seem find our fear instinct deficient, and created this video as a remedy. Why else would they produce such a terrifying - and fantastic - review of the various dangers one can encounter on this planet. From natural dangers like extreme water pressure, oxygen deprivation, volcanos, and disease, to man-made causes such as war, crime, and radiation from nuclear fallout - this video will keep you from leaving the house for a week or two. Or more.

#4: “Why Are Things Creepy”

Also in:

Top 10 Creepiest Things Caught on Trail Cameras

(2013) If you enjoyed the last entry, this one will be right up your alley. This video deals with the phenomenon of creepiness, which is the experience of fear when there is no obvious threat; can be a result of unfamiliarity and ambiguity. Vsauce typically deals with topics that are widely experienced but not very well understood, and this a perfect example. It makes great use of the video format, as Michael’s explanation of the phenomenon is expertly paired with images that are, let’s face it, seriously creepy. So not only do you understand what Michael means when he explains the creeps; he also gives us the creeps. How generous.

#3: “Why Do We Kiss”

Also in:

Top 10 Mysterious Videos That Can't Be Explained

(2013) For this entry, we take a deep dive into the field of philematology: the study of kissing. Focusing mostly on the biological and evolutionary functions of kissing, Michael describes the ways in which kiss-feeding may be the root of kissing, and the ways in which, from an evolutionary perspective, kissing provides a “taste test” for mates. The question “why do we kiss” seems obvious, and yet it also defies simple explanation. A basic question that yields an answer that then leads to a dozen new questions is Vsauce’s specialty. It’s no surprise this one has gained over twenty million views.

#2: “Is Your Red The Same as My Red?”

Also in:

Top 20 Scariest YouTube Videos

(2013) We can’t even describe how good this one is! It’s about the problem of the “explanatory gap”, or our inability to connect things that happen in the world, with our own experiences. Because of this problem, we can never know if we all see the same red. Like many previous entries, this video looks at an unanswerable question from a new perspective, pointing out that the activity of asking these questions is what makes us distinctly human. So even if you never find definitive answers, it’s important to ask. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions. “What If The Earth Stopped Spinning” (2014) “Names” (2013) “Spooky Coincidences?” (2014)

#1: “What If Everyone JUMPED At Once?”

Also in:

10 Scary Videos With Haunting Backstories

(2012) Have we not all asked ourselves this question before? Well, turns out that if everyone ACTUALLY jumped at once . . . not much would happen. (Cue the sad trombone.) Yet this provocative question acts, again, as a launchpad for exploring other great topics, like the effect of natural disasters on the movement of the earth. But, in pointing out the exact measurement of gravitational pull a single person actually has on the earth, Michael is essentially getting to the heart of Vsauce’s worldview: that no matter how accurately we put into perspective our utter insignificance, compared to the vastness of the universe, our lives still have meaning.
