We ain’t here to buy items - we’re here to tussle! Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 Video Games Where You Can Fight the Merchant! For this list, we’re looking at games where you can challenge shopkeepers and merchants to a fight. Some may be played for laughs whereas others may force you to crank your skills up a notch!

#10: “Fallout” (1997-) & “The Elder Scrolls” series (1994-)

5 Key Differences Between the Fallout Series and Games

These two Bethesda franchises are perfect if you’re looking to mess with shopkeepers. From pickpocketing to stealing things with a Level 100 Sneak skill, both “Fallout” and “The Elder Scrolls” have made it too much fun to mess with merchants. See an expensive item you need? Simply snag it while crouching to get it for free! While you’re at it, why not steal all of the clothes off your victim? And just for giggles, place some poison or a mine in their pockets and watch the bloodbath unfold! Ah, being a thieving scumbag has never felt so satisfying!

#9: “EarthBound” (1995)

“Earthbound” features a wide assortment of weird and absurd characters, and oddly enough, it does allow you to steal from one particular vendor. While you’re strolling about Happy Happy Village, you may stumble upon a stand selling eggs and bananas. Questionable combinations aside, stealing from this stand will cause a nearby Unassuming Local Guy to attack. Don’t fret - he’s far from a beefcake, especially compared to our other entries on this list. You should be able to take him down in less than a minute. Not only did you enact your crime, but you made sure you got away with it! Proud of yourself?

#8: “Ancient Domains of Mystery” (1994)

Most shopkeepers in games try to be fair and give players the benefit of the doubt. Regardless if you’ve done good or evil deeds, some are more than willing to sell you whatever you need. The shopkeepers in “ADOM”, on the other hand, are much more defensive. Sure, they’ll get aggressive over shoplifting or hostility, understandable. However, if you have an evil aura, there’s a chance that they’ll start attacking the second you approach them. So, maybe being a goody two-shoes DOES pay off? Ah, who are we kidding… BRING THE PAIN!!

#7: “Enter the Gungeon” (2016)

Bello is the kind of shopkeeper you don’t want to mess with. We can understand why players might want to though - what with his sometimes obscenely inflated prices. Despite doing business in a dungeon themed around guns, Bello holds a strict “no shooting” policy. Pull the trigger once, and he’ll whip out his shotgun. Dude clearly isn’t kidding around! Fire a second time, and he will unleash hell! If you’ve somehow managed to dodge through his rain of bullets, the screen will eventually go black before revealing that Bello has taken off with all of his wares. It’s all cool, man - we’ll just straight up steal from you next time!

#6: “Spelunky” (2008)

The shopkeepers in “Spelunky” often dance the line between extremely naive and insanely aggressive. Most of the time, it all depends on your encounters with previous merchants. Sure, we’ve all shot the merchants with their own product just to get a free weapon, but at what cost? For the rest of the shopkeepers to instantly attack us the second we walk through the door? Eh, it can be a hassle to deal with, but hey, we got a free weapon, and we’ll do it again in “Spelunky 2”! Why? Well...it’s funny! Do we need any other reason?

#5: “Crypt of the NecroDancer” (2015)

Good ol’ Freddie Merchantry (yes, that is his name) is a delightful chap to be around. As you explore the many floors of the crypt, you can tell he’s close by listening to his captivating opera vocals singing along with the game’s music. Although, if you’ve had some weird urge to off this guy, you can. Fair warning, though - he ain’t easy! In addition to moving in any direction he wants including diagonally, Freddie boasts nine hearts and an attack power of ten, meaning he will basically insta-kill you! Up to the challenge? Just plant a bomb next to him and make sure you can exact your plan!

#4: “Hades” (2020)

The 10 Hardest Boss Fights In Hades

Most of the shopkeepers on this list have either been one-off jokes or very brief combat encounters. The merchant in “Hades”, Charon, is not so brief and not so easy. Steal an item from him, and Charon will challenge you to a fight. Zagreus will try to talk his way out of it, but Charon isn’t listening. Thanks to his oar, Charon can cover quite a bit of range just from swinging at you, and his abilities - Ghost Charge and Floor Wave - cover a lot of ground. If you manage to get Charon down to about twenty percent of his health, he’ll end the fight and reward you with...a Loyalty Card? Well, discounts are always nice, so we’ll take what we can get.

#3: “Resident Evil 4” (2005)

10 Times Leon Was A Badass In Resident Evil Games

Arguably the most famous of all of our entries, the merchant from “Resident Evil 4” is not one to cause you trouble. Sure, he looks shady (like...REALLY shady), but he won’t harm you. There’s nothing stipulating you from harming him, though! Unfortunately, it comes at a price if you’re playing on Professional difficulty. If the merchant gets killed, whether it’s from zombies or Leon’s shotgun, he will not show up for the remainder of the game. In other words, you just unlocked a new difficulty! Good luck on the rest of your adventure, you murderous psychopath!

#2: “South Park: The Fractured But Whole” (2017)

The 10 BEST Boss Fights in South Park Video Games

While Morgan Freeman isn’t a vendor you’ll visit often in “Fractured But Whole”, you can buy crafting materials from him. He sells stuff, therefore he makes the list! If you manage to get behind the counter, you can hit Morgan Freeman a couple of times to initiate a boss fight. Here’s the kicker, though - Morgan Freeman is the hardest boss in the entire game! With a health bar at 9,999 and attacks that can cover nearly the entire field, you’re going to have to utilize almost every power possible as well as items that can call in characters to assist. Needless to say, he gives you a run for your money, and if you want to get all of the achievements, it’s a requirement to defeat him.

#1: “One Step From Eden” (2020)

Top 20 Games Where You Can't Fight Back

Whereas Charon, Freddie Merchantry, and Morgan Freeman were optional boss battles, the Shopkeeper in “One Step From Eden” is required if you wish to achieve the True Genocide ending. To initiate the boss fight, visit her in any world and deal at least one hundred damage. Be prepared for a tough fight! Most of her moves will either cover most of your area or trap you and rig your spaces with explosives or shards. Basically, she’s one of the hardest shopkeepers to fight in games, and the fact that her defeat is required to unlock a different ending makes her one of the best shopkeepers to fight!
