After meeting a vicious female werewolf, Oz cheats on his girlfriend Willow and suffers an identity crisis. In order to sort out his werewolf issues, Oz says goodbye to Sunnydale and the only woman he ever loved. Sitting behind the wheel of his van, Oz briefly reconsiders his decision, but ultimately drives away, leaving Willow and the audience in tears. Oz would return later that season. Of course by then, Willow had already moved on... While Willow chooses Tara when all is said and done, she’s able to part ways with Oz on a mutual, bittersweet note.

Blaming Buffy for her recent heartache, Cordelia Chase wishes that the vampire slayer never came to Sunnydale. Little does Cordelia realize that new girl Anya, making her first appearance, is actually a vengeance demon. Granting her wish, Anya sends Cordy to an alternate version of Sunnydale without Buffy Summers. She quickly finds that all hell has broken loose. The Master was never defeated, Willow and Xander are bloodthirsty vampires, and nobody is safe. It’s an ingenious setup to one of the show’s most unpredictable episodes. Everything comes full circle in the end, as Cordelia winds up back where she started and Anya is stripped of her powers. The moral: be careful what you wish for – duh!

Faith is back and looking for a rematch with Buffy. This time around, the bad girl slayer has an ace up her sleeve. As their fight reaches its thrilling climax, Faith whips out a special gift from the Mayor of Sunnydale. Following a flash of light, our heroine seemingly triumphs over her enemy. When Buffy says Faith’s catchphrase, though, it suddenly becomes clear who’s in control. This body switch not only makes for a stellar cliffhanger, but it also plays into the fascinating collation between the two slayers. Buffy and Faith are so different, and yet so similar. By spending time in each other’s shoes, they realize the only things that truly separate them are friends and family.

#7: Buffy and Spike Kiss

Despite starting out as enemies, Spike eventually evolves into someone Buffy can confide in, as demonstrated when she opens up to him about her experience in the afterlife. It’s in this rousing musical episode though that Buffy’s relationship with the blonde vampire reaches a pivotal moment. Unable to contain their feelings any longer, the two come together for a passionate kiss. Although the curtain closes on this uplifting embrace, Buffy and Spike’s future is still very uncertain. Matters take an especially dark turn when Spike later attacks Buffy in a bathroom. Their romance was an emotional rollercoaster that often left viewers with mixed feelings, and each new development left them asking, “Where will they go from here?”

#6: Final Battle Against the First

Top 10 WORST Final Seasons of Animated TV Shows

The epic conclusion of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” works up to a final showdown with the First Evil. Initially, it appears that Buffy and the potential slayers are vastly outnumbered. Buffy’s army is given the upper hand, however, as Willow completes a game-changing spell, allowing every Potential to unlock their true powers. Even with this advantage, victory doesn’t come without sacrifice. Anya dies nobly in battle while Spike gives his life for the greater good, bidding Buffy a heartfelt farewell. Sunnydale is also demolished in the process, with our surviving heroes narrowly escaping. Surrounded by her allies, Buffy’s journey ends on the most triumphant note possible. At the same time, the door is still left open to further adventures.

#5: Buffy and Angel Have Sex

Also in:

Top 20 Most Badass Buffy Summers Moments

After one and a half seasons of will-they-won't-they tension, Buffy and Angel finally declare their affection for each other and make love. Tender, sincere, and utterly romantic, this scene proved to be everything the shippers had hoped for. Unfortunately, it’s immediately followed by a tragic twist of fate. Having experienced a moment of true happiness, Angel’s soul is ripped away and he reverts back to the sinister Angelus. Upon seeing the monster Angel has become, Buffy realizes that she didn’t just lose her virginity that night- she lost her innocence as well, taking the first step down a dark path.

#4: The Death of Tara

Top 10 Stars You Forgot Were on Buffy the Vampire Slayer

While not without trials and tribulations, Willow and Tara likely had the most consistently healthy romantic relationship throughout the series. Having reconciled, the two seemingly have the rest of their lives together - but forever doesn't last that long. Outside, Warren shoots at Buffy but he accidentally kills Tara instead. In the blink of an eye, the person Willow loves most is taken away. Fuelled by dark magic, Willow avenges Tara’s death and takes out her pain on the rest of the world. A new, evil, Dark Willow thus emerges as a force to be reckoned with - but the power of friendship saves the day when Xander talks her down with the touching story... of a yellow crayon.

#3: R.I.P. Joyce Summers

Also in:

Top 10 Most Badass Buffy Summers Moments

While this series had no shortage of heartrending moments, the death of Buffy’s mom hit audiences especially hard. This is largely because her death remained grounded in reality. Joyce Summers doesn’t die at the hands of vampires or demons, but instead a brain aneurysm. It’s nothing short of devastating when Buffy discovers her mother’s lifeless body on the couch. Feeling powerless, Buffy calls for help, performs CPR, and even envisions the best-case scenario- one which doesn't come to be. Sarah Michelle Gellar’s gut-wrenching performance and Joss Whedon’s direction authentically capture the sudden shock of losing a loved one. This brutally honest sequence offers no silver lining, forcing the audience to confront the cruel nature of death.

#2: Buffy’s Sacrifice

Top 10 Buffy the Vampire Slayer Stars: Where Are They Now?

The 100th episode of “Buffy” has some of the most jaw dropping moments in the entire series. For starters, Giles suffocates the innocent Ben to prevent Glory’s return. But, even that couldn’t compete with the episode’s final minutes. In order to close the portal between dimensions, Dawn offers to give up her life. As Buffy remembers the First Slayer’s words, though, she decides to protect her little sister and throws herself through the portal. While this wasn’t the first time Buffy had died, her sacrifice still came as a massive surprise. We were all deeply moved as the episode closed on her tombstone, reminding us that she saved the world a lot. Fortunately, Buffy would live to fight another day. Before we get to our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions: Anya Left at the Altar Xander’s Splits Into Two Personalities Dawn Finds Out She’s the Key Buffy Didn’t Come Back Wrong Buffy Kills the Master The Mayor Explodes

#1: Buffy Kills Angel

Top 10 Memorable Buffy & Angel Moments

Joss Whedon isn’t afraid of killing fan favorite characters and nowhere is this more apparent than in the season two finale of “Buffy.” When Angel’s evil alter ego raises the demon Acathla, Buffy prepares to stake the vampire she once loved. The slayer is caught off guard, however, when Willow restores Angel’s soul. If she had performed the restoration spell only a few minutes earlier, this might’ve been a happy ending. Since Acathla has been awakened, Angel’s blood must be spilled to save the world. Accepting what she must do, Buffy kisses the confused Angel and stabs him with a sword. Angel may return the following season, but this moment never fails to shatter hearts. Do you agree with our list? What’s your favorite “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” moment?
