For this list, we'll be looking at characters from science fiction and fantasy TV series that many think should have been together at the end of series, whether they never got together, or if they did but they couldn't stay together for whatever reason. Also, since we'll be discussing the fates of these couples, a spoiler alert is in order. Our list includes Buffy the Vampire Slayer, True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, Once Upon a Time, Teen Wolf, and more! #10: Clark Kent & Chloe Sullivan

“Smallville” (2001-11) Clark Kent had several romances during this seminal, long-running superhero show, and while he may have leaned towards women with the initials “L.L.”, a lot of fans would have liked to see the young Man of Steel end up with his stalwart friend Chloe Sullivan. An investigator and appreciator of all things weird, Chloe was Clark’s confidante and most loyal friend, and her crush on him and their excellent rapport had many hoping they could come together. While they did end up with different people, they’ll always have the spring formal.
#9: Hiro Nakamura & Charlie Andrews
“Heroes” (2006-10) While we’re on the subject of romances involving superheroes, Hiro Nakamura’s time-crossed romance with Charlie Andrews is another we wish had ended happier. Hiro, who can manipulate time, meets Charlie, who’s waitressing in a diner and who has developed perfect recall, and they hit it off. Unfortunately, she’s murdered soon afterwards by the super-powered killer Sylar. Hiro tries to change the past, but learns that Charlie was dying already. When Hiro later discovers he is dying, he tries to save her again, succeeding this time, though he loses her again, this time in time; and she grows old and marries someone else. What’s the opposite of “yatta?”
#8: Henry Mills & Drizella
“Once Upon a Time” (2011-18) Bad girls rarely get the guy. Drizella may be one of Cinderella’s stepsisters, but she isn’t entirely evil and her chemistry with Henry Mills is felt by some to be superior to his relationship with her step-sibling. The pair don’t get a happily ever after with each other, though, as Drizella makes up with her sister and Henry ends up with Cinderella after all. Then again, Drizella did kill one of her previous love interests, so we don’t know if Henry lucked out or not.
#7: Allison Argent & Scott McCall
“Teen Wolf” (2011-17) Given that she’s from a family of werewolf hunters and he’s a werewolf, these two crazy kids were bound to have difficulties. Allison Argent is often caught in between her family and her love for Scott McCall, and ultimately it’s one of several factors that lead them to break up. Both move on to be with other people, but any chance of their being together ends when Allison is killed by an Oni; dying in Scott’s arms. Even worse, series creator Jeff Davis has revealed that, had Allison’s actress not departed, the couple would’ve reconciled.
#6: Malcolm ‘Mal’ Reynolds & Inara Serra

“Firefly” (2002) Why couldn’t these two ever be on the same page? Malcolm Reynolds, captain of the Serenity, and his Companion passenger Inara Serra share a love/hate relationship throughout this short-lived show. Their attraction is obvious, but her profession, which is essentially a high-class prostitute or geisha, and Mal’s disapproval of it and general standoffish nature, leaves them unable to become closer. “Firefly”’s tragically brief run didn’t leave much in the way of resolution and even the sequel film didn’t give fans closure on their relationship, and while it features in the comics, we still would’ve preferred to see them “in their bunk” onscreen.
#5: Eric Northman & Sookie Stackhouse

“True Blood” (2008-14) This vampire-centric show has plenty of failed romances, but this one hurts the worst. Half-Fae Sookie Stackhouse and vampire Eric Northman have quite the roller coaster of a relationship. While their attraction begins appropriately because of blood, it becomes genuine and is easily a fan favorite. However, Sookie is torn between Eric and Bill, and ultimately chooses neither. While she and Eric remain close throughout the remainder of the series, they don’t end up together, and Sookie ends up marrying someone who never even appeared on the show!
#4: Buffy Summers & Spike

“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (1997-2003) Yeah, that’s right – Buffy and Spike! The eponymous vampire slayer has had several romances with her chosen supernatural targets, but for our money, we wanted to see her end up with Spike the most. Although the platinum blonde vamp begins as a formidable antagonist, he becomes her reluctant ally through various circumstances and even coming to love her, despite not having a soul. However, his affections aren’t returned until Buffy goes through a dark time and seeks comfort from him. They eventually break up, and Spike temporarily dies, and while they get together in the comics, TV definitely would’ve been preferable.
#3: Kara ‘Starbuck’ Thrace & Lee ‘Apollo’ Adama
“Battlestar Galactica” (2004-09) Kara “Starbuck” Thrace and Lee “Apollo” Adama are both fighter pilots on the titular space carrier, but they’re very different people. Kara is a hothead, while Lee is more level-headed. Together, they’re like fire and water, and their on-again/off-again romance sees them conflict, sometimes physically. Yet, despite their strife, we still root for them. Unfortunately, both end up marrying someone else because they can’t communicate. Also, she dies, then comes back, their spouses die, then she might have been a ghost – the whole thing is screwy. But the point is: they end up apart and we were team Starpollo all the way!
#2: Phoebe Halliwell & Cole Turner

“Charmed” (1998-2006) Sometimes chemistry goes beyond good and evil. Phoebe Halliwell is one of the destined Charmed Ones, a trio of witch sisters, while Cole Turner is a half-demon initially tasked with killing them. However, their love leads Cole to rediscover his humanity. Although they marry, Cole is tempted by darkness and while Phoebe tries joining him in it, it ultimately leads him down a path too dark for her to follow. This leaves them estranged and him desperate to get her back, ultimately leading to his death, several times. While Cole’s obsession was excessive, their early relationship was so good, we can’t blame him for wanting to recapture that magic. #1: Klaus Mikaelson & Caroline Forbes
“The Vampire Diaries” (2009-17) Though we also carried a torch for OG couple Stefan and Elena to get together, we had to give it to these two. Human turned vampire Caroline Forbes has several romantic connections throughout the show, but her relationship with original vampire Klaus Mikaelson is the one many fans loved, yet failed to materialize. Although they start out rather antagonistically towards each other, each comes to see and encourage the best in the other. Unfortunately, just when their chemistry starts taking off, Klaus got his own spin-off show, and while they appear together there too, Klaus dies before he can make good on his promise to be her last love.
