For this list, we’re looking at the battles in anime that came out of nowhere and gave us whiplash with their unexpected awesomeness! “Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation” (2021) This isekai had already blown us away plenty of times prior with its exquisite animation, but it was this battle that served as the series’ ultimate flex. Despite only having three members, Dead End are more than equipped to take on someone as large and as fearsome as the Red Food Cobra…and by that we mean Eris and Ruijerd, who unleash combo after combo to bring the beast down. Who knew a tsundere chopping a giant snake in half could be so brutal yet so beautiful to behold?

“Toradora!” (2008-09) What do you mean romcoms can’t have balls to the wall action? After Sumire spurns Yusaku’s confession, Taiga becomes enraged, deciding to end things with her rival not with words, but rather with wooden swords. Despite one being a prissy princess and the other being nearly the size of an actual cat in stature, these two ladies know how to throw down. Holding nothing back, these two love rivals wreck the classroom, and nearly each other, as their duel escalates. One way to deal with hormones apparently.

“Fena: Pirate Princess” (2021) But…this is a show about pirates and princesses with glossy visuals! Nobody told us there would be this many limbs getting hacked off! Cornered by the obsessed and deluded Abel, it falls to the strongest of the Samurai Seven to defend Fena before the wicked sailor can get his claws into her. A tall order, since it pits Yukimura’s swordsmanship against a guy armed with a pistol. Just goes to show that having someone as cute as Fena to protect really goes a long way to shrugging off a stab to the gut.

“Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song” (2021) Just because she’s an idol doesn’t mean she isn’t combat ready! In order to prevent a spaceship full of innocents from going up in flames, it falls to Vivy to take on the cybernetic saboteur. Luckily, she just got herself an upgrade, allowing her to throw hands with the best. The choreography here is fast, fluid and frantic, turning Vivy from a mere observer to a force to be dealt with. It’s an elegant yet vicious display that once again proves that Wit Studio are truly wizards when it comes to crafting combat.

“Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun” (2019-) And this is why Ameri is best girl bar none. When a legion of large monsters are set loose to rampage through an amusement park, the Student Council President steps in to take one down by her lonesome. Thanks to her Bloodline Limit, Ameri is able to enhance her strength so long as she believes in herself, and with her favorite pop song blaring in the background along with her precious Iruma to protect, how could she not? Que the axe kick!

“Classroom of the Elite” (2017-) You’d think all these students would have to worry about is hitting the books, but in order to climb the educational ladder in this world, it turns out you’ve also got to break a few faces too. As their island challenge continues, Suzune is set upon by Ibuki, who uses the rain-swept terrain as an opportunity to take out Class D’s high-strung queen. What follows is a surprisingly competent display of martial arts. Suzune may have landed that impressive one-inch punch, but it’s hard to come back from a capoeira kick to the face!

“Call of the Night” (2022) While this gorgeously animated series is still very much about exploring adolescence and relationships in all of its quirky aspects, it still harbors a leading lady who is a vampire. And if you know anything about anime vampires – they pack a hell of a wallop. Targeted by a member of a sisterhood of vampires, Ko comes within an inch of death…until his partner in crime comes in at the last second and shows Seri her place on the food chain. It’s a brief scuffle but the impact is monumental! Nazuna may be all about that easy life, but she’s not about to let her precious prey be taken out by another bloodsucker.

“Crayon Shin-chan: Blitzkrieg! Pig's Hoof's Secret Mission” (1998) We don’t know how, we don’t know why, but the Shin-chan movies have incredible fight scenes woven into them for no reason whatsoever! This is no exception. Never thought we’d get a spy thriller featuring Shin-chan, but then again, the kid got away with parodying Star Wars, so why not this? Set upon by a slew of henchmen, Agent Orioke takes them all down in a blinding display of athleticism that nonetheless feels realistic given how much she struggles to overcome so many foes. We need a whole series of these!

“Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid” (2017-21) A dance of dragons featuring two dangerous divas dishing out devastation with every blow dealt. We know that Tohru and her brood were powerful, but this is the first time that we’ve seen just how absurdly strong they are. Blinded by old grudges and past pains, the maid and the office worker go all out, confronting their regret while also destroying everything in sight. Between Tohru’s fire breath and Elma’s energy barrages, we’re left with a showdown that rivals some of the best in the modern anime scene! And this is a damn slice of life about dragon maids!

“Higurashi When They Cry” (2006-) This is meant to be a horror anime, right? Well, in this instance, Keiichi decides to fight back against the franchise’s most iconic murderess, pitting bat against cleaver, as opposed to his usual habit of just getting mauled to death. It’s almost, dare we say, light-hearted in the way that the duo trade verbal jabs while trying to take off each other’s heads. The hacking and slashing has never looked smoother, far removed from the supernatural lightshow the series would divulge into later down the line. If this had been the series original ending, we’d be pretty satisfied.
