War is hell, something this game goes to great lengths to illustrate. Set during the First World War, the player takes on the role of multiple characters forced to endure its harsh realities. From aged Frenchman Emile, conflicted German recruit Karl, badass American soldier Freddie and brave Belgian nurse Anna, each must navigate and fight their way through war-torn Europe. Despite its charming design and simplistic puzzle mechanics, the experience is nonetheless a harrowing one, giving players a glimpse into some of the actual atrocities and suffering that occurred during such a bleak time in human history.

There’s nothing wrong with going back to basics, and in the case of this franchise, their bread and butter is fighting giant insects from outer space with a hell of a lot of firepower. And that’s exactly what you get in this remastered port of Earth Defense Force 2025. As a whole slew of giant bees, ants, spiders and all manner of monstrous creepy crawlies attack the planet, it’s up to your custom soldier to take them all out. Luckily you’re armed to the teeth with over seven hundred available weapons. Throw in fully destructible environments on top of it, and pest control has never been so much fun!

Short but sweet. For those that need a breath of fresh air and a change of pace, we wholeheartedly recommend the adventures of the adorable robot Bud. His mission: to re-oxygenate his home planet. Players are tasked with leading Bud across the gigantic Star Plant in what has to be the weirdest twist on Jack and the Beanstalk we have ever seen. Its duration may be brief, but thanks to the explosion of colour and variety of options when it comes to scaling across the environment, there’s a lot of value in the games’ replayability.

It’s “Journey” underwater. Need we say more? As the Diver, you’ll find yourself exploring the natural wonders beneath the waves, as well as the occasional submerged ruin. From the level design, to the satisfaction of watching the environment come to life whenever you interact with it, to the breath-taking colour and lighting, this game is pure stylistic bliss. Aside from the stunning visuals, the interactions with the marine life are guaranteed to make this gaming experience a memorable one. We’ve all heard of jumping the shark, but nothing compares to grabbing onto one’s fin and surging through the seas.

Sometimes being bad just feels like the right thing to do, and what better way to channel those rapscallion urges than by plundering enemy ships with a small crew of robot pirates by your side. As Captain Piper, you’ll blast your way through this procedurally generated side-scrolling strategy game, ricocheting bullets at rival factions and collecting as much booty as possible. The customisation, amount of collectables and intense amount of replay value ensure that just one round of cosmic burglaries won’t be enough. Plus, you can loot hats! Instant win.

When you think of the word ninja, images of a silent warrior prowling the night may come to mind. Well forget all that because this is the game that dared to dream that ninja could also mean non-stop visceral swordplay. As Lo Wang, it’s your mission to take up arms against an invading demon horde and slice them to bloody ribbons with both blades and firearms. Think the challenge and thrills of Ninja Gaiden, only from a first person perspective with a much more satisfying edge to it. Now, get slaying!

You have to give credit to the geniuses behind this game for coming up with such a simple yet wholly addictive premise. With the goal of reaching the end of the stage, the only means of transport available is to leap across a series of trucks. Might sound easy on paper, but one glimpse at its level designs and the somewhat difficult-to-predict movement of said trucks will quickly change your tune. Throw in abilities like super speed, double jump and slowing down time later down the line, and you have title that presents a step in the right direction for the future of first-person platformers.

If Fury Road taught us anything, it’s that nothing beats a wide-open wasteland filled with tons of enemy vehicles to blow to pieces. In this instance, we’re presented with a survival horror game set in an open world with an emphasis on one thing; parkour!
