From the beginning, Miss Lavigne had us all captivated with her pop punk sound that was vastly different from most of what was coming out of female singers at the time. She went against the grain, and alt rock fans everywhere ate it up. With singles like “Complicated” and “Sk8er Boi” topping charts, it might be understandable why this song - which is also off of her debut album - got a little lost. But the song has an infectious beat and though it talks about Avril’s own life experiences, it also hits on points that anybody can relate to. After all, haven’t we all wondered about where we belong in this world once in awhile?

#9: “Smile” Goodbye Lullaby (2011)

With references to blackout drinking mixed with praise of a lover for being the reason she smiles, this fun track perfectly blends the two sides of the songstress: the punk rocker and the girl in love. Not only that, but according to a review by Entertainment Weekly at the time, it “restore[s] Avril to her rightful place ahead of Katy Perry and Ke$ha.” And we can hear and feel why. From her fourth studio album, Goodbye Lullaby - which came out four years after the fan-criticized The Best Damn Thing - this song was the perfect way to remind us that the girl’s still got it. And it makes us smile too.

#8: “Runaway” The Best Damn Thing (2007)

As previously mentioned, Avril’s third studio album, The Best Damn Thing, was met with mixed reviews. Many fans complained that it is more pop than punk, some even saying it didn’t sound like her anymore. But “Runaway” is definitely a hidden gem on this album. An anthem for those going through a rough time but still powering through it, the beat and lyrics of this song are uplifting, while still remaining in Lavigne’s roots. And the chorus is a perfect sing along both in concert and even a karaoke bar.

#7: “Fall to Pieces” Under My Skin (2004)

Under My Skin, Avril’s second studio album, took a much darker tone for the singer. Most of the songs on its track listing are about break ups or the death of a loved one. However, “Fall to Pieces” is a sweet love song all about opening up to a lover and perhaps moving to the next level of a relationship. This rock ballad was released as a single, and while it hit number 6 on Billboard’s Bubbling Under Hot 100 List, the song still did not get the advertising it deserved. But put it on a mix for your alt rock-loving significant other, and we’re sure they’ll fall to pieces too.

#6: “Everything Back But You” The Best Damn Thing (2007)

From a loving ballad to a harsh punk rock song. If this doesn’t sound like Avril, we don’t know what does. And we’ve all been there, feeling used and cheated on by a lover who we gave everything to, both metaphorically and literally speaking. This catchy tune also brings us back to the height of pop punk popularity, no matter how far away music gets from it. So, though “Everything Back But You” was never released as a single, it is definitely the perfect anthem for the bitterly broken hearted.

#5: “Push” Goodbye Lullaby (2011)

Fights break out in relationships all the time. Even people who are deeply in love have differences of opinion. But it’s up to how we act and react in those altercations that prove the mettle of our relationships. This little ditty is about trying to overcome those obstacles and stay together. Though this song was released as a single when she had fallen out of the limelight, this song harkens back to the “Complicated” Avril. And come push or shove, we love every note of it.

#4: “Together” Under My Skin (2004)

Miss Lavigne can play a handful of different instruments, including the piano. And this eerie tune was one of the first to showcase that talent. The second song on her second album, this haunting ballad about a dead love between two partners is one that will follow you long after it’s over, like the ghost of a forgotten lover. But like so many on this list, this song was never released as a single and therefore went underloved by the public at large. It is one of Avril’s favorites though. So, why not honor that and settle in for an eerie listen?

#3: “Losing Grip” Let Go (2002)

Standing Eight - Losing Hand (Lyric Video)

Time and time again, over the course of her career, Avril has proven she knows how to write and sing a darn good heartbroken anthem that bites back with fangs. “Losing Grip” was the one that started it all. Opening her debut album with explosive chords and a grungy feel, this song states loudly and proudly that this songstress was here to kick some ass and take some names. And, in spite of its ranking on the charts at the time, it is still rocking tune to this day.

Well, if it’s this tune and Avril Lavigne, it creates a masterpiece.Co-written by Chad Kroeger, this somber lullaby takes Avril’s emotional sound to a whole new level. It’s pace, set by the slow plucking of a guitar, gives the song a drunken feel right from its melancholy start. And then the lyrics tell a gritty tale of combating loneliness with sex, and you are pulled along the grim path until the song’s end. Good luck shaking those chills after this one.
