Top 10 Underappreciated Celeb Couples that Deserve More Love

Top 10 Underappreciated Celeb Couples that Deserve More Love
VOICE OVER: Phoebe de Jeu WRITTEN BY: Sammie Purcell
These underrated celebrity couples deserve so much more love. Our countdown includes Alicia Vikander & Michael Fassbender, Ellen Page & Emma Portner, Alison Brie & Dave Franco, and more!

#10: Alicia Keys and Kasseem Dean (Swizz Beatz)

A couple who grooves together, stays together! But it wasn’t always perfect harmony for these two lovebirds. They met as teens in the ‘90s, and Alicia’s first impression of Swizz was anything but romantic. In a 2013 interview with Marie Claire, Alicia said she found Swizz “ostentatious” and “annoying.” Not exactly what you want to hear from the future love of your life! But eventually, Swizz’s wild personality won Alicia over – the two began dating in 2008 and tied the knot in 2010. Things weren’t always easy – Swizz’s ex-wife had some choice words for Alicia in 2009 – but the trio have reconciled and love their blended family. Swizz’s ex even wrote a book about it with the couple’s help.

#9: Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance

Love at first sight? Not for these two! These veteran actors prove that true love takes time. The two attended Yale drama school together – the perfect setting for a college romance, right? Not quite. There were no sparks in those college days. But 14 years later, the two met in L.A. and decided to give it a shot. And what followed was a fairytale first date for the ages, right? Again … not quite. Actually, the date was pretty boring. It’s kind of a miracle they made it to the second one! But lucky for them (and us), they did. The two married in 2007 and continue to keep love alive, while giving us excellent television shows and movies in the meantime.

#8: Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender

This beautiful and mysterious couple has kept their relationship very private. The two reportedly began dating in 2014, but didn’t make an appearance together until nearly two years later. Their relationship found solid footing, like so many do, while filming a movie together. The film required them to spend about a month locked in a beachfront lighthouse playing a married couple – not a shabby way to fall in love, we’d say! Since then, the couple has stayed fairly quiet, but got married in 2017 and continue to look at each other like they hung the moon whenever they make a red-carpet appearance.

#7: Sterling K. Brown and Ryan Michelle Bathe

Another college duo makes the list! These two met at Stanford University in 1994 and dated on and off through college, but broke up for quite a long time. After three and a half years, the two got back together – but not without some extra work on Sterling’s part. When planning to tell Ryan he loved her, he apparently caught her in the middle of a workout, and had to chase her down – literally. “She starts running through Koreatown, and I start running along with her,” he relayed in an interview. Luckily, the couple don’t have to do much running after each other anymore, and have been going strong since 2007.

#6: Leighton Meester and Adam Brody

In the 2000s, if you would have told us that Seth Cohen and Blair Waldorf were destined to end up together, we would have told you to not get our hopes up. But the king and queen of 2000s teen dramas, Leighton Meester and Adam Brody, really did end up together. The two wed in 2014, and just welcomed their second child, in 2020. They’re private, but def going strong, and even engage in the occasional joke about their TV origins. Apparently, they have a “Seth and Blair Day.” Well, in our heart of hearts, everyday is Seth and Blair Day. XOXO!

#5: Ellen Page and Emma Portner

Ellen Page came out of the closet to much admiration in 2014, but kept her dating life fairly private afterwards. Until Emma Portner came along... The “Juno” actress and the dancer got married in 2018, and since then have kept the cuteness coming on social media. Besides looking at each other with literal heart emoji eyes, the two do interpretive dances together, and love getting rowdy at hockey games – as two self-respecting Canadians should! We’re looking forward to a lot more wonderful content from these two, and maybe some pictures of that top-secret wedding? Please?

#4: Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone

As some of the funniest people in Hollywood, these two never fail to make us laugh, whether they’re hamming it up in “Bridesmaids” or attending fancy Hollywood parties in tracksuits. But, the two were making each other laugh long before they graced our screens. They met in 1998 via the famed comedy group the Groundlings, where McCarthy was instantly taken in by Falcone’s odd sense of humor. And of course, he found her just as endearing. The two got hitched in 2005, and both say they got “hit with the lucky stick” in the relationship department. Well, we think we did too!

#3: Alison Brie and Dave Franco

We’ll see your meet-cute, and raise you a Mardi Gras meet-cute! This adorable pair met in New Orleans on vacation in 2011 – and it was anything but innocent. “It was 48 hours of… sex, and a lot of making out,” said Alison while on Fallon this year. The whirlwind wasn’t over after that. The pair later met up in New York, where Dave asked Alison to join him in Paris, via a note left in her sweatshirt. Cue the romantic sighs! She said yes, and their globe-trotting romance continued. Luckily, the two survived the calm after the storm, tying the knot in 2017.

#2: Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar

If Leighton Meester and Adam Brody are 2000s royalty, these two have the ‘90s all sewn up. The story of how Buffy and Zack Siler became close on the set of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is proof that great relationships start with great conversations. According to a 2020 interview with US Weekly, Sarah didn’t have a driver's license, so Freddie would drive her to and from the set. They talked about life, philosophy, and everything else under the sun. And thus, a romance was born. The two got married in 2002 and have been going strong for almost 19 years.

Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.

#1: Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick

And now, we hit you with the closer! Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon have one of the longest lasting relationships in Hollywood. And both know that keeping over 30 years of love alive means compromise. When the two began having kids in the ‘80s, Kyra focused more on the kids than her career. But when the opportunity arose for her to star in “The Closer” – meaning she would have to leave New York for L.A., Kevin was more than happy to stay behind and take care of their children. Besides being experts at parenting, these two have graced us with a plethora of quarantine singing content. And for that, we shall be eternally grateful.
