For the category, Lydia brought a literal potato sack dress emblazoned with her name across the chest. Unfortunately, she was eliminated the week before, so the look remained packed away. Lydia eventually unveiled it on “Whatcha Packin’,” giving viewers a glimpse of the outfit they never got to see on the main stage. Then, in a resourceful twist, she repurposed the exact same piece as her entrance look for “All Stars” 10. It was a scruffy but heartfelt throwback look that perfectly blended Americana kitsch with drag chic.

#9: DD Fuego’s ‘Not Today, Satin’ Look

Season 18

There's something deeply personal about a look built from childhood memory. For Season 18's ‘Not Today, Satin’ runway, DD Fuego crafted a stunning satin matador ensemble as a celebration of her Mexican heritage, and she didn't do it alone. She collaborated with designer Gunnar Deatherage, whose resume includes custom pieces for Chappell Roan and Shakira, to bring the vision to life. On her YouTube channel, DD actually sat down with Deatherage to discuss the creative process. And on “Whatcha Packin',” she revealed the look was rooted in vivid memories of watching the men in her family attend bullfights and soccer matches, and recognizing, even then, that those spectacles were their own form of theater and drag.

#8: Plasma’s ‘Fandango’ Look

Plasma was one of the most exciting queens of Season 16. Her mid-season elimination felt like a gut punch, especially when you see what she had waiting in her suitcase. The ‘Fandango’ runway, featured in the penultimate episode, was never graced by Plasma's presence, and what a loss that was. Her pink, purple, and black look drew from the rich tradition of Spanish fandango dancers while cleverly incorporating fan-like elements into the silhouette. It was also inspired by the grandeur of the Ziegfeld Follies and the golden age of showgirls, giving it a distinctly vintage stage sensibility. And if you think that's stunning, her unaired ‘True Colors’ look, where she chose baby blue as her primary color, was also breathtaking.

#7: Dahlia Sin’s ‘Frozen Eleganza’

As the porkchop queen of Season 12, Dahlia never got the chance to present her ‘Frozen Eleganza’ look on the main stage. The concept leaned deliberately campy and anime-inspired, drawing from the anime stylings of her drag mother Aja. The design was made to resemble ice cream, with exaggerated sleeves and a cherry topping on the shoulder. It certainly would have brought a much-needed playful fantasy to a runway category that was essentially a parade of literal winter looks. Dahlia received criticism during her brief run for not always matching the fashion polish of her competitors. This look suggests she had some seriously tasty ideas still waiting in the freezer.

#6: Denali’s ‘Drag Excellence’ Look

Season 13

Few things say “home” quite like the Northern Lights, and Denali turned that natural wonder into an elaborate piece of drag couture. Her unaired “Drag Excellence” look was inspired by the aurora borealis, paying tribute to her hometown of Fairbanks, Alaska. Although viewers never saw it on the Season 13 finale runway, Denali later wore the finished outfit for the season’s virtual reunion, finally allowing fans to appreciate the design in action. She also discussed the look on Whatcha Packin’. Her unaired package contained another unforgettable creation for the “Beast Couture” runway, which Denali called one of her absolute favorites. She described that creation as a “pregnant acid trip alien queen.”

#5: Kahmora Hall’s ‘Mixed Bag’ Look

Season 13

A joke from a designer turned into one of the most breathtaking concepts in Kahmora Hall’s runway package. For the Mixed Bag category of the Bag Ball, Kahmora originally planned a “Bag of Tricks.” Then her designer jokingly asked, “How about a douche bag?” The idea stuck, and they quickly sketched a black latex ensemble shaped like an enema douche pump. Kahmora was eliminated before the Bag Ball, so the outfit never made it to the runway. She later shared photographs of the finished piece and the original sketches on her Instagram account. Her unused package also included a sculptural look covered in small pockets that were filled with beautiful roses, which was intended for the “Haute Pockets” runway.

When Alyssa Hunter shared her unaired “Mirror, Mirror” look, the internet collectively gasped. Having been eliminated in the “Daytona Wind” episode, Aura never reached the “Night of a Thousand Beyoncés” category, but later revealed the custom outfit she had prepared. The design recreated Beyoncé’s opening look from her iconic 2018 Coachella performance, originally created by Olivier Rousteing for Balmain. Designer Joshuan Aponte adapted that elaborate design for drag, including Aura’s name and a moon across the back. Seven different embroidered, sequined fabrics were deconstructed and reassembled to create the cape. Once photos surfaced online, fans were understandably gagged. The detail, the craftsmanship, the reverence – this look was a love letter to Beyoncé and to the art of drag itself.

#2: Utica Queen’s Drag Excellence Look

Gothic architecture met high-concept drag in Utica Queen’s unaired “Drag Excellence” look. Inspired by the Notre-Dame Cathedral, the design transformed religious imagery into an elaborate, avant-garde ensemble covered in intricate hand-applied jewels. There was something eerie about the finished creation, with its unsettling details and otherworldly silhouette drawing comparisons to the Pale Man from Guillermo del Toro’s “Pan’s Labyrinth.” Utica also explained that her religious upbringing informed the concept, making the look more personal than its theatrical weirdness might initially suggest. Unfortunately, she was eliminated before the Season 13 finale runway and never got to present it on the main stage. Considering how unpredictable Utica’s fashion could be, this was exactly the kind of finale reveal fans expected from her.

#1: Manila Luzon’s ‘Swerves and Curves: Padded for the Gods’ Look

All Stars 4

Sometimes a runway concept is so outrageous that it gets rejected before the cameras even roll. For All Stars 4’s “Swerves and Curves” runway, Manila Luzon originally planned a couture gown modeled after a menstrual pad, complete with a dramatic blood stain. According to Manila, RuPaul considered the idea “in bad taste,” and production instructed her to wear her backup look instead. She ultimately walked the runway in the pink, quilted French-inspired ensemble viewers saw on television. But the rejected design didn’t disappear forever. Manila later posted herself modeling the original gown, explaining that she wanted to challenge the stigma surrounding menstruation. It was camp and deliberately made to shock, and that was precisely the problem.
