If you weren’t familiar with Cap’s sidekick before last year, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” certainly brought their friendship to the forefront. The pair received their own comic book series in the 1970s and again in the early 2000s. In the cinematic universe, both Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson share a background in the military, which draws them together. In the comics, however, Wilson had a troubled childhood and eventually ended up in a gang. He eventually meets Rogers, who convinces him to become the Falcon. Together, they are able to defeat the Red Skull, and a partnership was born.

Wolverine isn’t an easy person to get along with. He’s hot tempered, irrational, and for the most part prefers to be alone. Kitty Pryde, also known as Shadowcat, however, was one of the few people to get through to him, and the two maintain a close relationship. The pair even teamed up for their own limited series in the mid-80s. Both Kitty and Wolverine head to Japan, where Kitty is brainwashed but is ultimately saved by Wolverine, who acts as a mentor throughout the series.

While Barry Allen and Hal Jordan have a long standing, working relationship, their friendship does not compare to that of the newer incarnations of the Flash and Green Lantern: Wally West and Kyle Rayner. Wally and Kyle were drawn to each other immediately following the creation of the new Justice League, thanks in large part to their youth and love of goofing around. Whether it is generating Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots with the Green Latnern’s ring or insulting each other mid-battle, this friendship is truly built to last.

Casey Jones, the hockey mask wearing vigilante, works alongside the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles when they need assistance. While he maintains a good relationship with all of the turtles, he is especially close to Raphael. The two initially quarrelled, although would soon bond when they worked together to take down several muggers. The occasionally hot-headed Raphael and passionate Casey compliment each other perfectly and make for an effective partnership and friendship.

Sometimes the best friendships are between people who are incredibly alike – other times, it’s between people who don’t seem to have anything in common; as is the case between Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl. Hit-Girl is sarcastic, crude, and violent, while Kick-Ass is sensitive and inexperienced. Hit-Girl is also focused and cool-headed, however, and she trains Kick-Ass to be her crime-fighting partner. At the same time, however, she teaches him how to talk to girls and live like a normal kid.

#5: Tony Stark and Col. Jim “Rhodey” Rhodes

Everyone needs that friend who keeps them stay in line. For Tony Stark, that person is Colonel Jim Rhodes, AKA Rhodey. Iron Man saved Rhodes after he was shot down in the jungle not long after Stark had escaped from Wong-Chu. Stark later approached Rhodes about becoming his pilot, and the two became close friends. Rhodes would risk his life to save Stark on several occasions, and even stepped in as Iron Man when Stark was too drunk to continue his fight with the villain Magma. Rhodes would eventually become War Machine and fight alongside Iron Man in several battles.

#4: Peter Parker and Harry Osborn

Don’t you hate it when your best friend is also an enemy of your secret alter-ego? This is exactly what Peter Parker has to deal with, as his best friend Harry Osborn hates Spider-Man, believing he is responsible for his father’s death. Harry eventually becomes the Green Goblin, and battles Spider-Man on several occasions. Peter is still able to maintain a close friendship with Harry, however, and the two even share an apartment at one point.

Both Rorschach and Nite Owl II had difficult childhoods, a factor that certainly helps them understand one another in a world where super heroes are outcast. In fact, the two even worked together as a team before the creation of The Crimebusters aka, The Watchmen, taking down several big-time criminals. The pair was reunited during the events of Watchman as Rorschach attempts to track down the “mask killer”, where Nite Owl II even helps break Rorschach out of prison.

While supervillains have been known to begrudgingly team up, they typically don’t maintain friendships, at least not for very long. This is not the case with the New Queens of Crime however. Harley initially saves Ivy from capture, and Ivy takes Harley to her hideout. The two begin to bond, and Ivy gives Harley advice on how to deal with the Joker’s abusiveness. Although they have very different personalities, they genuinely care for each other and are two of the strongest female characters in the DC universe. The relationship between Professor X and Magneto is the backbone of the X-Men comics and a focal point of the film series. The pair originally met in Israel at a clinic for Holocaust survivors and became friends, but their ideological differences caused them to part ways. These differences have caused the pair to come into direct conflict on several occasions, although they have always maintained a great respect for each other.
