Top 10 Most Powerful Fighting Game Characters

An all-powerful sword brimming with evil energy and memorable cast of bad-asses both noble and devious dueling to get their hands on it. Welcome to Watchmojo.com, and today we’ll be counting the Top 10 Soul Calibur Characters. For this list we’ve selected 10 most powerful and memorable characters from the game’s main canon. Therefore, special guest combatants like Darth Vader, Link, and Yoda, though they are awesome, don’t make the cut. We’re ranking these guys and gals on style, popularity and fun factor – not who you should pick in a tournament.

#10: Tira

A mentally unstable young woman who is prone to deadly mood swings, Tira was formally part of a prestigious assassin’s guild before the influence of the Soul Edge drove her to madness, and to become a loyal counterpart of the game’s main antagonist, Nightmare. Sometimes referred to as the ‘misguided angel of death,’ Tira is a fierce character whose unique weapons make her a favorite for competitive ‘Soul’ players. During a fight, her mood can be switched between “Jolly” and “Gloomy,” basically enabling Tira to switch between offense and defense heavy tactics.

#9: Kilik

Kilik grew up learning the intricate ways of staff-fighting from monks and from his master, Edge Master. When the members of the temple were driven to insanity by the Soul Edge, Kilik accidentally killed his childhood friend and lover. Now, he travels the world to seek revenge and retribution, and to put an end to the evil blade’s influence. Kilik is most notable for his weapon and fighting style – his staff’s insanely long range, and ability to combo easily, make him one of the most newbie-friendly fighters in the series.

#8: Cervantes

The first “Soul” character to come into possession of the legendary evil blade, and the original antagonist of the series, Cervantes was a privateer who saw his free-will succumb to darkness. After murdering his whole crew, he spent years travelling the world on his ghost ship, spreading terror. Eventually, he was defeated by Sophitia and Taki, but he keeps getting resurrected, intent on wrestling control of the blade from Nightmare. Cervantes is a bad-ass pirate who uses a combination of brute force, range, and supernatural powers to lay the beat down on his opponents.

#7: Maxi

Not the most memorable character in terms of his design or story, Maxi nonetheless makes this list because of his bad-ass nunchuck fighting style, and for his longevity in the series. Maxi, a former sea pirate, is the bitter rival of the golem known as Astaroth, and spends his days hunting down the monster that ruthlessly murdered his crew. Seriously, watching a skilled player string together an endless combo of quick strikes and twirls with those nunchucks is a real thing of beauty. Plus, Maxi’s got a cool Elvis-style pompadour and Bruce Lee fighting style make for a killer combo indeed.

#6: Yoshimitsu

As the only fighter to appear in both “Tekken” and “Soul Calibur” series, the mysterious cyborg swordsman known as Yoshimitsu is one of Namco’s most iconic characters. After realizing that his legendary katana has been possessed by some evil energy, Yoshimitsu sets out to clean his sword and ends up crossing paths with shards of the Soul Edge along the way. Yoshimitsu’s fighting style is totally nuts, combining strange Ninjutsu techniques, self-sacrifice, and lots of hopping around on the tip of his blade.

#5: Voldo

Voldo's a FREAK! SoulCalibur VI Highlights - MojoPlays

In a series filled with unique characters, Voldo takes the cake as the weirdest of them all. Voldo was originally the right-hand-man of a rich weapons collector, but was sealed inside of a giant vault as its protector. Years in the vault turned him into the freakish creature he is today, a kind of, writhing, blind, mole/snake thing with hand blades. He travels the land seeking the most valuable blade of them all. Voldo doesn’t ever even talk, he just kind of hisses, growls and moans as he slithers around the stage. Creepy.

#4: Taki

One of the only truly good and noble characters in the game, Taki has one mission – to find and destroy the Soul Edge and its proprietor before it sends the world into a state of ruin. Taki is a female ninja, and arguably one of the most bad-ass ninja characters in the history of video games. A true mainstay of the series, Taki’s high-flying, agile fighting style, combined with her short range knives, make her a formidable force both in terms of the games storylines, but also as a playable character.

#3: Mitsurugi

The son of an impoverished farming family, Mitsurugi took to the ways of the samurai after witnessing the destruction of his homeland at the hands of bandits. A master swordsman, Mitsurugi originally set out to claim the Soul Edge for himself – however, learning of his quest, Nightmare began seeking Mitsurugi out, deeming him a worthy challenge. In terms of play-style, Mitsurugi is fairly simplistic, using a well-balanced combination of speed, range, and power along with his trademark katana. Still, his timeless traditional character design make him one of the faces of the franchise.

#2: Ivy

Top 10 Characters We Wanna See In A Fighting Game

The illegitimate daughter of the pirate Cervantes, intent on seeking out and destroying her long-lost evil ghost dad, Ivy is perhaps the most recognizable “Soul Calibur” character, probably as a result of her extremely over-the-top sexualization. But beyond the skimpy attire, Ivy is a really cool and uniquely designed character, with some awesome fighting mechanics stemming from her weapon, a sword that transforms into a long-range whip. Despite her questionable design, Ivy is certainly one of the most bad-ass female characters in fighting game history. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions. Sophitia Astaroth Lizardman Hilde Zasalamel

#1: Nightmare

Another Top 10 Nightmare Fuel Video Games

Nightmare is the embodiment of evil and a test case for what happens when a noble soul becomes possessed by the destructive influence of the Soul Edge. Siegfried was a knight, grieving over the accidental death of his father at his hands. The Soul Edge promises to resurrect Siegried’s father if he harvests innocent souls, and slowly, Siegried becomes possessed and transforms into the evil creature known as Nightmare. Every character’s story is intertwined with Nightmare – most trying to defeat him, which won’t be easy given his extremely powerful attacks and the horrible power of his blade. Agree with our list?
