Featured on both his debut EP and his debut LP, “Life of the Party” is a bit of a misnomer. While the title would have you believe that this is an ode to the party anthem, it’s actually a bittersweet song about accepting who you are and not letting others dictate how you feel about yourself. The composition is simple – mostly vocals and piano – but effective. “Life of the Party’s” then set the record for the youngest person to have a top 25 debut on the Billboard Hot 100, as Mendes was just 15 years old at the time of its release.

#9: “Aftertaste” Handwritten (2015)

An upbeat and personal track off Handwritten, “Aftertaste” allowed Mendes to flex both his vocal range and his storytelling ability. A breakup song through and through, “Aftertaste” is made up of universal themes that we can all understand. From the pain of a sudden loss to the struggle of trying to overcome something unexpected, Mendes hits all the right pressure points in this one. If this song proved one thing it’s that all Shawn Mendes needs to connect with his audience it’s an acoustic guitar and his stellar voice.

#8: “Never Be Alone” Handwritten (2015)

It’s songs like this one that made Shawn Mendes’ debut album such a resounding success. A gentle yet heartfelt track in which the award-winning singer speaks directly to the fan-girl in all of us, with promises to keep us “safe” and “sound”.“Never Be Alone” has all the elements that make Mendes a star: passionate storytelling, a catchy hook and a theme that we can all relate too. It may not have gotten the same amount of airplay as some of “Handwritten’s” other songs, but it is nevertheless one of the album’s best!

#7: “I Know What You Did Last Summer” Handwritten (2015)

Let’s get something straight right off the bat: no, this is not a song about everyone’s favorite late 90’s slasher film of the same name. “I Know What You Did Last Summer” brought together two of music’s brightest young stars in Mendes and former Fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello. Released as a single off of “Handwritten’s” revisited version, the song wasted no time climbing pop music charts around the world and to date the accompanying music video has more than 240 million views on YouTube. So yeah, people seem to like it. These two better link up again soon and fast!

#6: “Something Big” Handwritten (2015)

The second single released off of “Handwritten”, “Something Big”'s title turned out to be prophetic, as the song would ultimately eclipse 125 million views on YouTube and is certified platinum in both the US and Canada. The song was an announcement of Mendes’ arrival, a fun, laid back jam with a super catchy hook that let the talented youngster show the world that he was someone worth paying attention to. The music video is somewhat funny to watch in retrospect as Mendes looks like a literal child. Then again, he kind of was.

#5: “Ruin” Illuminate (2016)

The second track off Illuminate, his critically acclaimed sophomore album, “Ruin” is Shawn Mendes proclaiming to the world that he has mastered the slow jam, so you’d be wise to pay attention. Okay we get it, it’s another breakup song from a young pop star, but the amount of sincerity in Mendes’ voice as he laments a lost love is incredibly stirring. As he gently strums his guitar and pleads with some unseen girl to listen it’s hard not to get just a little choked up. Or a lot, we aren’t judging…

#4: “Mercy” Illuminate (2016)

Also in:

Easily one of his most successful singles to date, “Mercy” is Shawn Mendes at his absolute best. The song slowly crescendo’s to a dramatic climax; and as the passion in Mendes’ voice starts to build and the swell of the piano and the guitar collide it’s a forgone conclusion that the hairs on the back of your neck will stand up. “Mercy” topped out at number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and was one of 2016 biggest pop-rock tracks. If this is a sign of things to come we can’t wait to see what Shawn Mendes dreams up next!

#3: “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” Illuminate (2016)

This song is so easy to dance to you might have to take a break right now in order to bust a quick move. The ultimate radio song that has just the right amount of pop, rock and Mendes having what seems like a whole lot of fun, “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” unsurprisingly struck a chord with listeners around the world. The song was a chart topper in a handful of countries and received widespread acclaim from critics. But if we’re being honest, none of that really matters, because at its core the song is just a total blast from start to finish.

#2: “Stitches” Handwritten (2015)

Also in:

If “Something Big” got people jumping, then “Stitches” got them thinking; thinking that Shawn Mendes was more than just a pretty face. Both the song and its accompanying music video are a testament to his skills as an entertaining, and in retrospect, signs of what was to come. Released as the third single off his debut album, “Stitches” was a top hit hit in his native Canada, and cracked the Billboard Hot 100, eventually topping the Adult Contemporary, Adult Top 40, and the Mainstream Top 40 Charts, and hit number 1 in both the UK and the Scottish regional charts. It too, was “Something Big”. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions: “Don’t Be a Fool” Illuminate (2016) “A Little Too Much” Handwritten (2015) “Bad Reputation” Illuminate (2016)

#1: “Treat You Better” Illuminate (2016)

The Ryan Palotta-directed video for this track has crossed the billion mark. You simply can’t get that many people to watch something unless its good…really good; and that’s exactly what “Treat You Better” is, a really good song. The storyline is engaging, the chorus addictive and when Mendes croons that he can “treat you better” you can tell he means it. The song would ultimately earn him his second top 10 single and be nominated for both a Juno Award and a MTV Video Music Award. You know we’ll be paying attention to whatever comes next for this wickedly talented singer!
