#10: “Euphoria” (2019-26)

Rue Bennett's story was always heading somewhere devastating, and deep down, most fans knew it. The HBO drama's final season ends with Rue dying of a drug overdose, a conclusion mirroring the Israeli series the show is based on, which ended the same way. Some viewers called it brutally honest, pointing out that relapse and overdose are heartbreakingly common realities. Others even read it as a poignant tribute to Angus Cloud, the beloved actor who played Fez and who himself died of an overdose in 2023. But plenty of fans felt robbed of hope. The finale's heavy focus on Colman Domingo's Ali following Rue's death left many frustrated, as they felt the other main characters they'd spent three seasons with barely got a goodbye.

#9: “The 100” (2014-20)

For a show built on survival, “The Last War” delivered an ending that left viewers arguing about what survival actually means. The finale revealed humanity’s fate hinged on a cosmic judgment from a godlike alien species, with most of the surviving characters ultimately “transcending” into a higher existence. Some fans appreciated the emotional reunions, the return of Lexa and Abby, and Octavia’s transformation into a peacemaker. Others were far less impressed, especially with the transcendence concept, as those who stayed on Earth with Clarke were unable to have children, effectively ensuring humanity’s extinction. For critics, the ending abandoned the gritty survival drama that defined the series. For supporters, it elevated the story into something larger and more philosophical.

#8: “Ozark” (2017-22)

The final moments of “Ozark” left viewers staring at their screens in utter disbelief. Throughout four seasons, the Byrde family clawed their way through cartel wars, betrayals and bloodshed. By the finale, they emerged with deep political influence and financial security, but remarkably few consequences. Some viewers applauded the show’s refusal to offer easy morality, arguing that powerful people often escape accountability. Others felt utterly cheated. The death of fan-favorite Ruth Langmore proved especially divisive. Many expected a tragic ending to her story, but they believed she deserved a more meaningful farewell than what she got. Another divisive moment was Jonah Byrde’s final act. While some argued it made sense for him to embrace the family’s criminal legacy. Others found it jarring and unearned.

#7: “And Just Like That…” (2021-25)

The “Sex and the City” sequel series had already spent three seasons dividing fans over everything from Samantha’s absence to Miranda’s behavior and the introduction of Che Diaz. The finale managed to continue that trend. Carrie Bradshaw ultimately embraced life on her own terms, rewriting the ending of her book and celebrating her independence. Many viewers found that message empowering and fitting. Unfortunately, that heartfelt resolution shared space with an overflowing toilet that drenched a Thanksgiving gathering. Showrunner Michael Patrick King defended the plumbing disaster as a metaphor for life’s messiness, but many fans simply found it ridiculous. The rushed nature of the ending also frustrated audiences, though the return of the original “Sex and the City” theme song delivered one last nostalgic smile.

#6: “Dexter” (2006-13)

After eight seasons spent balancing family life with his secret identity as a serial killer, Dexter Morgan’s story concluded with him faking his death and starting a new life as a lumberjack in Oregon. The internet was not amused. Viewers criticized nearly every aspect of the ending, from Dexter abandoning Harrison to the tragic fate of Debra Morgan. Watching Deb die, then seeing Dexter bury her at sea in a manner resembling his treatment of murder victims, struck many fans as particularly cruel. Others argued the finale betrayed the character’s core motivation of protecting those he loved. The backlash became so legendary that producers revived the series with “Dexter: New Blood,” in an attempt to write a more fitting conclusion.

#5: “Lost” (2004-10)

No finale has generated more confusion, debate and internet mythology than “Lost.” After six seasons of confusing mysteries, fans desperately wanted answers. What they got was an emotional farewell centered on the characters finding one another in an afterlife-like realm known as the flash-sideways. Some fans found parts of this deeply moving: Jack’s final journey, Michael Giacchino’s soaring score, and Christian Shephard’s explanation of the afterlife. However, many others felt the show failed to answer several questions it had raised in previous seasons. The finale also suffered from audiences wrongly thinking the characters were actually dead the entire time. Even today, arguments about “Lost’s” ending are nearly as famous as the ending itself.

#4: “The Sopranos” (1999-2007)

The internet loves a cliffhanger. The finale of “The Sopranos” practically invented the modern obsession with it. As Tony Soprano sat in a diner with his family, viewers watched suspicious strangers come and go while Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” played in the background. Then, without warning, the screen cut to black. Many viewers initially assumed their cable had gone out. Others were furious, feeling robbed of a definitive answer regarding Tony’s fate. Over the years, fans dissected every frame, constructing elaborate theories about whether Tony was assassinated. Critics who initially dismissed the ending began reevaluating it as a masterstroke. Rather than telling viewers whether Tony lived or died, creator David Chase forced audiences to experience the paranoia that defined Tony’s life.

#3: “Stranger Things” (2016-25)

After nearly a decade of Demogorgons, Upside Down horrors, and supernatural showdowns, “Stranger Things” finally reached the finish line. The result left audiences surprisingly divided. Some praised the emotional farewell, particularly the extended epilogue that allowed characters to reflect on their journeys before reuniting for one final game of Dungeons & Dragons. Critics, however, had plenty to say. At over two hours, the finale was accused of dragging its feet, with long stretches of conversation slowing momentum. Others felt the battle against Vecna lacked tension because the main cast seemed protected by overwhelming plot armor. Some longtime viewers also found the mythology increasingly convoluted, arguing that certain lore reveals felt designed to set up future franchise projects rather than provide satisfying answers.

#2: “How I Met Your Mother” (2005-14)

Few sitcom finales have ever produced such a dramatic split between creators and fans. For years, viewers followed Ted Mosby’s search for “the one,” only to discover that Tracy McConnell, the Mother herself, would die after finally entering the story. The finale then revealed that Ted’s narration had really been about seeking permission from his children to pursue Robin. Fans were outraged. Barney and Robin’s marriage, the focus of the entire final season, was dissolved within minutes, just so Ted could have his way. Yet defenders of the finale argued the ending reflected life’s unpredictability, where relationships fail, tragedy strikes and people reconnect years later. The backlash became so intense that an alternate ending was officially released to give fans a happier conclusion.

#1: “Game of Thrones” (2011-19)

After becoming a global phenomenon, “Game of Thrones” concluded with one of the most controversial endings in television history. The fiercest criticism centered on Daenerys Targaryen’s transformation into the so-called Mad Queen. Many viewers felt her destruction of King’s Landing happened far too quickly, while defenders argued the signs had been there all along. Then came Bran Stark’s coronation. The choice inspired countless memes and bewildered reactions, largely because Bran had spent much of the series removed from the central political conflicts. More than 1.5 million fans signed a petition demanding a remake. A handful of critics praised the visuals and certain character conclusions, but the prevailing verdict was damning: a show that once redefined prestige television had fumbled its own legacy.
