#10: A Different Man (2024)

When hes not Bucky Barnes, Sebastian Stan wows in intriguing projects like this one. Fans of the actor should definitely check out this inventive dramedy. His character Edward has a condition called neurofibromatosis, but an experimental procedure transforms him. Edward tries to start over and then finds out hes the subject of a play. The circuitous plot features hilarious twists and turns, with the hero pretending to be someone else and finding himself outwitted by a mysterious stranger. A Different Man finds Stan in top form as a man trying to figure himself out and paying the price for it.

#9: Eephus (2024)

Before their field gets torn down, a group of men play one last baseball game. There isnt one central hero to follow or any big drama to speak of, with the film focusing on the interpersonal relationships of these ordinary guys. You also get some amateur philosophy from people growing up and learning to move on. With a mix of humor and pathos, Eephus isnt just about baseball. You dont have to love sports to watch the climactic matchup either. The unique personalities are entertaining on their own, with a cast of mostly unknowns charming their way the story.

#8: Possessor (2020)

What would an assassin do if they could possess people? This engaging premise serves as the template for Possessor. Director Brandon Cronenberg makes you uneasy and tense, watching Tasya Vos conduct her sci-fi operations. The cool technology and futuristic world dont distract you from a fantastic plot either. As Vos journeys into the mind of Colin Tate, she struggles to maintain control over her subject. Cronenberg plays with this fun idea while including real-world implications. Christopher Abbott deserves special praise for playing a man possessed, blending two personalities together and trying desperately to fight back.

#7: Paterson (2016)

In what could be considered a low-key masterpiece, this film follows the easygoing life of Adam Drivers bus driver. The hero has a steady routine of work, writing poetry, and walking his dog. He also spends time with his supportive girlfriend, not worrying much about tomorrow or everyday worries. Director Jim Jarmusch lets the quirky and casual atmosphere flow without pushing it too much. The filmmaker lets Driver give a laidback performance, with some poetic words enhancing the overall experience. Its a movie that rejoices in the mundane aspects of life without making things too dramatic.

#6: Personal Shopper (2016)

Dont let anybody tell you that Kristen Stewart is just Bella from Twilight. Her collaborations with French director Olivier Assayas are particularly strong. In Personal Shopper, the actress plays an American woman grieving in Paris. She collects clothes by day while wondering about her dead brother. Assayas creates the perfect starring vehicle for Stewarts subdued work. You could call this a thriller or a horror film, but its also an insightful look into a grounded ghost story. The filmmaker finds a way to examine a serious topic while keeping you on the edge of your seat.

#5: All of Us Strangers (2023)

In this drama, a troubled writer somehow comes to interact with the dead. He also finds himself falling for his neighbor. Andrew Scott plays the lead man to perfection, giving the character Adam a three-dimensional angle to explore. The hero forms a screen romance with the hypnotic Harry played by Paul Mescal. As both a romance and a fantasy, All of Us Strangers defies typical conventions. Based on the book Strangers, this trippy narrative sees what happens when you literally and figuratively confront the dead. Its both a heart wrenching and philosophical examination of love.

#4: You Were Never Really Here (2017)

In a jarring and unsettling film, Joaquin Phoenix is a mercenary haunted by the past and present. Hes then assigned to find a politicians kidnapped daughter. This includes some brutal violence, with the protagonist going to hell and back to complete his mission. Phoenix shows that he can do so much with his eyes or a stern look. The actor breaks your heart, playing a broken man fighting through the criminal underworld. Director Lynne Ramsay does not have easy answers in You Were Never Really Here. Giving the audience plenty of questions, the filmmaker takes a minimal approach to a narrative about crime and mental anguish.

#3: Presence (2024)

The Payne family experience some paranormal happenings, but they arent in an average ghost story. Presence shows the action from the spirits point of view. Filmmaker Steven Soderbergh puts you right in the action, making you reconsider the horror genre altogether. Theres also compelling work from the likes of Lucy Liu and Chris Sullivan. Written by Hollywood hitmaker David Koepp, this plot shifts around your expectations until a shocking ending. This is the perfect watch for people experiencing scary movie fatigue. Playing with and subverting cliches, this project makes you think twice about whats lurking in your own home.

#2: Red Rocket (2021)

For this wild and strange adventure, an adult film actor finds himself back in his Texas hometown. The scheming Mikey Davies tries to schmooze his way through a string of old contacts. Sean Bakers movie could be considered a comedy, but its not without its darker moments. The main characters behavior is nothing short of despicable at times. Having said that, this entertaining trainwreck is hard to look away from or deny. Simon Rex plays the anti-hero that puts himself in increasingly bad situations. His compelling work heads up an odd plot full of awful decisions, toxic relationships, and funny surprises.

#1: Leave No Trace (2018)

A veteran named Will lives in the woods with his daughter Tom. Their living situation serves them well enough, but eventually theyre forced to re-enter society. This causes a rift between the parent and child. While Ben Fosters character struggles with PTSD, Thomasin McKenzies teenager wonders about living a normal life. Its a complex family story full of both unique and universal themes. Foster once again proves that hes an underrated actor, giving audiences an interior character suffering through change. Leave No Trace is a heartbreaking tale that makes you want to re-examine your relationships.
