Welcome to Watchmojo.com and today we’re listing off our top tenplayable Grand Theft Auto characters. We’ve already got ourselves a list of the best side characters, so now it’s time to get hands on with the main characters. Players must be able to control these crazy megalomaniacs and wreak havoc across the worlds they inhabit.

The first 3D protagonist doubles as the first entry on our list. Unlike future characters in the series, Claude is completely mute as you speak his mind through his extreme criminal actions. Making a small appearance in Sand Andreas, Claude meets his flame in Catalina before being sold out and left for dead in Liberty City. After his escape he connects the dots of several criminal syndicates across the city as you collect his fortune and his revenge, and all without uttering a single word.

He’s the Vice President of ‘The Lost’ with an attitude as rich as the smell of motorbike oil. Dedicated to the group he manages Johnny finances his own life through his own murder for hire endeavours, to which you the player can make very simple for him. Acting laid back, Johnny prefers to think all plans out and not throw caution to the wind, unless particular individuals rile him up then all bets are off. Originally acting as a minor character for Grand Theft Auto IV, his status was upgraded in the first DLC package as he demonstrates his impressive sawed-off shotgun skills.

Born with a silver spoon in his mouth to a Triad Boss, this particular gang member sets off for revenge after his father is murdered. Upon arriving he’s left for dead immediately coming off the boat, Huang Lee mixes in with the drug trade to get a foot hold in America on his quest for vengeance. Determined and unrelenting in his ambitions, Lee keeps a cocky wit about him whilst keeping up an intelligent presentation. One of the cleverest entries to this list, and one that’s a little underrated.

Much like Johnny, Luis makes use of his sporadic main game appearances and shows us his full brand of action in the DLC. The bodyguard and business associate of Gay Tony was no stranger to violence beginning his employment for the night club giant at the age of 22. Loyal to his cause with his own glowing confidence, Luis serves to fill in the empty blank spots in the main games story all the while adding a new flavour to the in-game universe.

He’s the first playable character of the new San Andreas and the one to show off the ropes. Connected to ‘The Families’ street gang in Los Santos, Franklin works illegally repossessing cars before better ventures come his way. Described as ambitious but flawed by his associates whilst being physically fit and fashion conscious. With a closer connection to a moral code than most other characters on this list, Franklin helps to balance the world of Grand Theft Auto V from his partners in crime.

Speaking of partners in crime, it’s about time we got to talk about the mid-life crisis murderer. Formerly a professional thief known as Michael Townley, De Santa’s world revolves around the idyllic yet vapid lifestyle of living in Los Santos. In the midst of his aging life, Michael finds it hard to balance good and evil in his mind as his desperation drives him happily back to the mad world of marauding heists once again. Questioning his morality at every turn whilst seeing a son-like figure in Franklin, Michael is the crowning jewel on the fifth instalment.

Bringing high definition to Liberty City for the first time is Eastern European who hates bowling. Born in 1978 Niko is shown to be one of the most tormented protagonists of the crime-spree series after having a brother who died in the Bosnian war and became a teenage soldier himself. His vengeance filled mind leads him to the land of the free to find those responsible for selling out his old group, but the choice to grow towards fire or forgiveness is left entirely in the players hands.

The Grove Street dwelling gangster leaves his well-deserved tag on this list. With a valued history in Liberty City, CJ is called back to Los Santos to mourn the recent death of his mother before being hounded into his own criminal endeavours. As of yet CJ is the most customisable character in the GTA universe being able to influence his clothes, tattoos, hair and even body weight. Completely dependable, he’s voiced by Chris Bellard whose cousins with Franklin’s voice actor making them a literal Grove Street family.

Now here’s someone who is clearly a little different. Completely insane is the Michael Townley’s old associate and the only Canadian protagonist in the franchise. Easily tempered and incredibly violent at even the snapping of fingers, Trevor is the onlyplayable character to actually kill another in Johnny Klebitz. Out of all the characters on this list, we can all agree that Trevor encapsulates the carnage of Grand Theft Auto the most. “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City If Trevor brings the violence of Grand Theft Auto, then it’s Tommy who brings the heart. Taking inspiration from some of the best movie criminals from Mr. Blonde and Toni Montana, the Hawaiian shirt wearing ex-con joins the drug trade of Vice city to make connections, pull strings and form his own criminal empire.
