VOICE OVER: Phoebe de Jeu WRITTEN BY: Saim Cheeda
We're diving into some of the most uncomfortable and problematic moments from this beloved teen drama that haven't aged well. From questionable romances and creepy stalking storylines to insensitive portrayals of trauma and body shaming, these moments remind us just how much perspectives have changed since the show first aired. Whether it's the uneasy marriage between Dan and Rachel, the disturbing stalking arc involving Peyton, or the wildly unrealistic teen marriage of Nathan and Haley, each instance shows a side of the series that fans now find hard to watch. Along the way, we also revisit cringe-worthy moments like Pete Wentz's inappropriate high school romance with Peyton, the infamous dog-eats-heart hospital scene, and the mishandled treatment of heavy topics like assault and school shootings. These scenes offer a sobering reminder about how storytelling and cultural sensitivity have evolved over time.

#10: Dan Marries Rachel

The show often treats romances interchangeably, with multiple characters involved despite the obvious emotional fallout. However, fans today draw the line with uncomfortable age gaps, especially one with such a messy backstory. That’s what happens with Rachel and Dan, who are married by the seventh season. Considering Rachel made the moves on both Lucas and Nathan back in the day, her sudden status as their stepmother has a certain ick factor that’s hard to overlook. Although she’s only using Dan to elevate her newfound status, the latter clearly sees her as the “love of his life,” making the relationship come across as both weird and problematic.

#9: Brooke’s Attack

Although we can appreciate the message of empowerment through adversity in this storyline, its execution hasn’t aged well. More specifically, the way everyone reacts to Brooke’s attack. After she’s left bruised by Xavier Daniels, Brooke pretends she fell down the stairs. Rather than question the obvious red flags of her injuries, her friends simply downplay them. Peyton’s reaction, in particular, doesn’t sit well with fans, as she quickly switches back to talking about her relationship with Lucas. While she does deliberately withhold the truth, the lack of concern and sympathy from Brooke’s friends makes this arc come across as insensitive and dismissive.

#8: Peyton’s Stalking

This storyline took a strange turn that no one could have seen coming. To start with, Peyton reunites with her half-brother, Derek. But the more things progress, the creepier Derek begins to behave with his “sister.” Eventually, we learn that the man posing as Derek is actually a stalker named Ian Banks, who posed as her half-brother to get close to her. Using a familial connection as a setup for a deeply inappropriate angle hasn’t sat well with fans over the years. Many have also voiced disapproval of the show justifying Banks’ actions through Peyton’s resemblance to his deceased girlfriend. Instead of making him look sympathetic, it comes across as a cheap excuse to downplay his behavior.

#7: All the Fat Shaming

As a product of its time, many of the characters’ traits and mannerisms just wouldn’t fly today. Chief among them is how casually they body-shame each other. Brooke and Rachel frequently trade barbs about weight, throwing out hurtful words as punchlines. However, the most uncomfortable case comes from Mouth’s weight gain. The arc plays out like an excuse to make fun of his appearance, with one scene entirely dedicated to Millie shaming him on live TV. The way the show frames it as an inherent flaw is its biggest issue, with plus-sized characters routinely treated as unappealing by everyone around them.

#6: Everything About Nanny Carrie

It’s hard to pick just one moment when it comes to Nanny Carrie, mainly because everything she does goes off the rails. After failing to steal Nathan from Haley, she then abducts both Dan and Jamie. But while the storyline brings its fair share of disturbing twists, what truly feels outdated is how the show explains her behavior. As we eventually learn, Carrie’s backstory involved losing both her father and her child under tragic circumstances. Her actions were ultimately attempts to replace what she’d lost. Stories involving emotional trauma have been reevaluated over time, with audiences nowadays more critical when it’s linked to harmful behavior. Today, the show’s portrayal of Carrie comes across as more insensitive and out of touch than dangerous or unhinged.

#5: Peyton’s Spiked Drink

Early on in the series, Peyton and Brooke crash a college party but find themselves dealing with more than it was worth. While talking to one of the boys, Peyton fails to notice when he slips something in her drink, leaving her disoriented and vulnerable. Although the boy is ultimately punished after Lucas comes to Peyton’s defense, the show blows past the effect it has on Peyton. Instead, it becomes the setup for both Peyton and Brooke to compete for Lucas’s affections. Rather than focusing on Peyton’s troubling experience, the show rewards Lucas for her trauma. Audiences today aren’t as willing to overlook the disturbing implications of this episode, especially the way it glosses over a serious topic in favor of relationship drama.

#4: Dan’s Heart

To be fair, not many in 2009 bought into this bizarre moment, either. But the fact that it ever made it to air suggests the showrunners expected audiences to just go with it. As it happens, Dan waits at the hospital for a heart transplant, only for the paramedic to drop the case…and a dog eats it. Yes, you really have to see it to believe it. As ridiculous as it is hilarious, the scene has become infamous with fans, with some considering it as the moment the show “jumped the shark.” Today, most question the comical nature of the whole situation instead of buying into the emotional twist the show tries to make it out to be.

#3: Nathan & Hailey’s Teen Marriage

Given how much they behave like adults, it’s easy to forget that the main characters are just teenagers in the show’s early seasons. And yet, Nathan and Haley get hitched as far back as the first season. At the time, fans saw the moment as a romantic milestone in their relationship and celebrated when the pair became parents. However, when viewed through a modern lens, many see Nathan and Haley as rushing into a complicated marriage. Their relationship is quickly weighed down by responsibilities and pressures they aren’t prepared for, both making huge sacrifices at an age when people usually figure out what they want. In retrospect, their early marriage seems more like wishful thinking than romantic or realistic.

#2: Pete Wentz’s Relationship with Peyton

Yes, that’s right, Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy was on “One Tree Hill.” And instead of playing a character, he literally plays Pete Wentz. Because the singer isn’t a fictional character, the optics around his romance with Peyton aren’t pretty. While actress Hilarie Burton is just three years younger in real life, her character was still in high school, dating the then-27-year-old Wentz. Their scenes can be cringeworthy to watch, even more so with how physically intense they are. While the show frames the relationship as fun and exciting, many fans can’t excuse the age gap. Looking back, making Wentz play an age-appropriate character would’ve been an easy solution, so it’s anyone’s guess why the show simply didn’t go that direction instead.

#1: Dan Frames Jimmy for Keith’s Murder

The school shooting episode remains one of “One Tree Hill”’s most famous, lauded for shedding light on a highly sensitive subject. However, its final moment has since been increasingly criticized. After Keith fails to talk down the troubled and tormented Jimmy, Dan uses it as an opportunity to kill his brother out of his own resentment. This frames Jimmy as Keith’s murderer, allowing Dan to walk away unpunished. Although narratively effective, it undermines the devastating event to a plot device. Rather than reflecting on Jimmy’s pain and the ones affected, “One Tree Hill” goes for shock value instead. Over time, many fans have called the moment out for prioritizing drama over a traumatic situation with a real-life basis.
