#10: “Friday the 13th: The Game” (2017)

“Friday the 13th” is a slasher franchise that goes hand in hand with asymmetrical multiplayer. IllFonic’s game puts most players in the shoes of Camp Crystal Lake’s counselors and one lucky player in the role of Jason Voorhees. While the counselors attempt to complete objectives that will lead to them escaping, Jason undergoes the thrill of the hunt to see if he can wipe out all seven of them. Although it had some launch issues to overcome, “Friday the 13th: The Game” became a solid multiplayer release that paid homage to one of Horror’s most famous killers. Sadly, licensing disputes with co-creator Victor Miller led to servers being shut down in 2020. As of 2022, you can only play it through peer-to-peer matchmaking.

#9: “Dying Light 2” (2022)

While you can certainly choose to face the hordes of the undead by yourself, “Dying Light 2” lets up to three other players join on your journey. The game’s world is a giant playground to parkour around in, which makes for a lot of fun when traversing it with your buddies. Additionally, you’ll each be able to collect and update different weapons, making you a force of varied destruction for the plethora of enemies you’ll encounter. You’ll generally come across more enemies at any given time. But with your friends there, who can also revive or heal you, nothing is insurmountable. When the night falls and the enemies grow more aggressive, you’ll be grateful to have someone watching your back.

#8: “Killing Floor 2” (2016)

Sometimes, we just want the simplicity of blasting away waves of mutated, horrific creatures while Heavy Metal music blares. “Killing Floor 2” definitely scratches that itch. Players choose between several upgradeable classes and team up with others to face mobs of what the game refers to as ZEDs. With each wave, you’ll be able to purchase different, highly volatile weapons within your class. And you’ll definitely need them as each wave has more enemy types and more enemies in general; the final wave is a tough boss, each of which has different attributes and unleashes a last batch of minions. It’s fast-paced, hilariously macabre, and packs more firepower into its rounds than many other FPSs.

#7: “Depth” (2014)

The Best Part About Fortnite: Depth to The Madness

Most of us were scarred by “Jaws,” so any game that pits us against sharks will definitely have us gripping our mouse and keyboards. This indie PC title is another asymmetrical gem. It follows a group of divers attempting to collect treasure. Only, unfortunately for them, the treasure is guarded by two other players controlling vicious sharks. The divers get a variety of underwater weapons to utilize against the predators. However, each shark option comes with different abilities, and the players will earn new ones with the more divers they eat. It’s surprisingly well-balanced as both the divers and sharks have their own strengths and weaknesses to exploit. Every underwater moment is soaked in tension, no matter which side you’re on.

#6: “Hunt: Showdown” (2019)

It’s always nice when a game lets you be the hunter rather than the prey. Although, in the case of this FPS, your prey certainly won’t go quietly. Set in the late 1800s, “Hunt: Showdown” has you control a bounty hunter, piecing together clues to find a monster’s location. Along the way, you’ll be confronted with lesser, although still horrific, beasts. Teaming up with others is the best way to play as you can face the tremendous foes together. However, there will always be other bounty hunters, also working towards finding the boss or trying to kill you and steal the bounty should you get to it first. With scarce ammo and all manner of enemies lying in wait, “Hunt: Showdown” is a thrilling experience.

#5: “Evil Dead: The Game” (2022)

Also in:

Every Evil Dead Game RANKED

We’ll always be grateful for more “Evil Dead” content, but we were honestly surprised to find out how good this game is. The asymmetrical multiplayer title has four players control characters across the film series and TV show. While they work to close an entrance to an alternate world, another player controls the Kandarian Demon with a variety of spooky powers. Not only can the demon lay traps and possess Deadites to fight them, but you can also possess the other players should they not manage their fear level properly. It’s a really fun multiplayer game on its own. But there was so much effort put into it with various references to the source material that we couldn’t help but fall in love with it.

#4: “Resident Evil 5” (2009)

Also in:

10 Resident Evil Games That Deserve Remakes

For some, “Resident Evil 5” marked an unfortunate sidestep into action over Horror. While it is definitely less scary than other entries, we find it endlessly fun. And there are definitely still plenty of disgustingly horrific creature designs in there. Players follow Chris Redfield and franchise newcomer Sheva Alomar as they attempt to halt the spread of the Las Plagas parasite in Africa. A frequent complaint for the single player mode was Sheva’s AI constantly wasting ammo and health resources. But in co-op, you won’t encounter such a problem, making it the best way to play. The plot goes in wild directions and the boss fights are grossly over the top. Every single bit of it is entertaining, much more so with a Player 2.

#3: “Dead by Daylight” (2016)

Also in:

The Best Video Game Story of 2018 - Red Dead Redemption 2

By far the most popular asymmetrical multiplayer Horror game, “Dead by Daylight” has one player stalking four victims that are locked inside the map with them. The only way to escape is to fix five out of seven generators that can open the gate. What has set this game apart from others is a parade of incredible tie-ins to multiple beloved Horror franchises. Everything from “Saw” to “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” to “Silent Hill” has been represented through frequent updates. The developers didn’t just place iconic killers into the game. What’s more noteworthy is that each one also comes with their own unique power based on their other appearances. These crossovers have given it much more staying power, allowing the community to grow.

#2: “Phasmophobia” (2020)

“Phasmophobia” is one of the most unique indie games in a long time, let alone a horror game. While you can play it alone, it pales in comparison to the level of enjoyment you’ll get when playing it with others. You and your pals will play as paranormal investigators, exploring different sites to figure out what type of ghost is haunting them. What makes the game unique is its use of voice recognition software. While investigating, various items and the ghost itself will react to key phrases and words. Depending on your friends, this may lead to a lot of talking over each other. But there’s no denying how satisfying it is to crack each puzzle and reach your goal. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.

#1: “Left 4 Dead 2” (2009)

10 MISTAKES Video Game Developers Intentionally LEFT IN

Over a decade later and still, no multiplayer Horror game has quite reached the heights of “Left 4 Dead 2.” While some have certainly tried to follow in Valve’s footsteps, this sequel is too good a blend of insane action, obscene enemy design, and a sense of comradery that can only be built from facing these massive hordes of zombies together. Broken into a group of short campaigns, each level has survivors work towards making it to safety. Beyond your regular zombies, there are also now-iconic special infected types lurking in the shadows, waiting to ambush you with their unique abilities. “Left 4 Dead 2” provides hours upon hours of enjoyment, even including campaigns from the first game. It is truly not to be missed.
