Release Date: November 8, 2019 [U.S.] According to a popular conspiracy theory, director Stanley Kubrick helped fake the moon landing, and hid clues in his adaptation of “The Shining.” So, we guess it’s fitting that on Apollo 11’s 50th anniversary, we’re getting a sequel to the Kubrick classic. Although “Doctor Sleep” is based on Stephen King’s 2013 novel, director Mike Flanagan says that his film “also exists very much in the same cinematic universe that Kubrick established in his adaptation of ‘The Shining.’” Does that mean we should expect a straight-forward interpretation of King’s book or one that takes major liberties? In any case, Flanagan proved that he can do King justice with “Gerald’s Game” and Ewan McGregor seems like an inspired choice to play an adult Danny Torrance.

This is just one of the reasons why it’s taken a decade to get a sequel with the original cast reprising their roles. As the group continues their journey across a zombie-infested wasteland, they encounter newcomers like Zoey Deutch as the airheaded Madison, Rosario Dawson as the hard-hitting Nevada, and a couple doppelgangers in the forms of Luke Wilson and Thomas Middleditch. Bill Murray is even set to pop up again with fellow Ghostbuster Dan Aykroyd. There’s one lingering question that we need answered, though: are there any Twinkies left because – believe it or not – they do have an expiration date.

Just as he did in “Logan Lucky,” Daniel Craig puts on his best Southern drawl as Detective Blanc. When a wealthy crime author played by Christopher Plummer is killed in his mansion, everyone in his family is a suspect. Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Toni Collette, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Michael Shannon, Lakeith Stanfield, and Katherine Langford round out an ensemble piece big enough to make “Murder on the Orient Express” blush.

Release Date: November 15, 2019 [U.S.] Disney has been enjoying a mostly phenomenal year at the box office, but some of the films the company inherited in the 20th Century Fox acquisition, namely “Dark Phoenix,” have lost money. Disney still has a few more Fox assets to distribute in 2019, though, and “Ford v Ferrari” seems like a certified comeback vehicle. This intriguing true story stars Matt Damon as Carroll Shelby, one of the masterminds behind the Ford GT40. Christian Bale plays Ken Miles, the driver who gave the Ferrari a run for its money at the 34th Grand Prix of Endurance. Director James Mangold’s film is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, suggesting it may be a strong bet for Disney/Fox when the Oscar race revs up.

Release Date: November 22, 2019 [U.S.] Over a decade and a half after his death, Fred Rogers remains a prevalent figure in popular culture and a beacon of childhood wonder. Last year’s “Won't You Be My Neighbor?” became one of the few documentaries to surpass $20 million at the domestic box office. This biopic is sure to be another crowd pleasure that transports audiences back to a simpler time. Tom Hanks plays the famed children’s entertainer, but the film is just as much about Matthew Rhys as Lloyd Vogel, a journalist who reluctantly agrees to write a piece about Rogers. Once Vogel hops aboard the trolley, though, he comes to find just how beautiful a day in the neighborhood can be. We sense a serious case of the feels coming.

Release Date: November 8, 2019 [U.S.] We’ve all joked about Shia LaBeouf, but 2019 may mark a career resurgence for him. “The Peanut Butter Falcon” already earned LaBeouf some great reviews and “Honey Boy” should be another winner based on the buzz from Sundance. LaBeouf not only stars in the film, but also wrote the screenplay, which you can tell by its semi-autobiographical nature. Lucas Hedges plays a young actor who – like LaBeouf – started as a child star, exploded onto the big screen as an adult, and eventually ran into trouble with the law. LaBeouf also drew inspiration from his difficult relationship with his father. Actually, LaBeouf plays the father of Hedges’ character in flashbacks. This reflection of LaBeouf’s life may leave audiences seeing him in a new light.

Through his feature directorial debut in “The Witch,” Robert Eggers established himself as one of our most promising up-and-comers. Eggers drapes his follow-up film in otherworldly black and white with an aspect ratio that harkens back to a forgotten age of cinema. Coming out of the gates at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, “The Lighthouse” received a wave of rave reviews with Joseph Walsh of Time Out giving it a perfect 5 out of 5 stars.

Many of us had imaginary friends growing up, but Jojo “Rabbit” Betzler may be the only one who envisioned a flamboyant version of der Führer. Shunned by his peers at a Hitler Youth Camp, Jojo longs to find acceptance within his hate group. Things only grow more complicated when Jojo learns that his mother is harboring a Jewish girl. Intended to be about as historically accurate as “Inglourious Basterds,” “Jojo Rabbit” is a bizarre satire that only somebody like Waititi could pull off.

Release Date: September 6, 2019 [U.S.] Considering that Stephen King’s novel was over 1,000 pages, it was wise of Warner Bros. to split the cinematic adaptation into two features - especially since “Chapter One” became the highest-grossing horror movie ever. Where the first film centered on the Losers’ Club during their youth, this second chapter catches up with the gang as adults. Even before she was officially cast, Jessica Chastain was at the top of virtually everyone’s list to play a grown-up Beverly Marsh. The rest of the cast is equally up to par, with Bill Hader playing Richie, Jay Ryan playing Ben, and James McAvoy playing Bill. One character who hasn’t changed over the past 27 years, however, is Pennywise, who’s once again brought to life with Bill Skarsgård’s manic energy. Release Date: October 4, 2019 [U.S.] “Joker” centers on a crazed clown who runs wild in Gotham City, but this is otherwise set to be a radically different interpretation of the villain. Actually, you could argue that this Clown Prince of Crime has more in common with John Wayne Gacy than his comic book counterpart. The film isn’t based on a specific “Joker” or “Batman” comic either, primarily borrowing inspiration from “Taxi Driver” and “The King of Comedy.” Most intriguing of all, this is one of the few DC movies that’s not intended to jumpstart a franchise. It’s a purely experimental showcase for director Todd Phillips and actor Joaquin Phoenix. If they play their cards right, “Joker” may not only revolutionize the titular character, but also the genre he stemmed from.
