#10: Sentinels “The Matrix” franchise (1999-2003)
In the future, the machines use humans as batteries because geo-thermal energy is for hippies. However, those who manage to reject the Matrix and escape must face things far more terrifying than guys in suits. Front and center are the Sentinels. These squid-like monstrosities hunt down humans using sonar, and when they find them they rip apart their ships – and their crews – with lasers. Also, these things never hunt alone…

While his origin and backstory changes with every film, the one thing that remains constant is Mechagodzilla’s skill in wounding the king of Monsters and taking out half of Tokyo. Made from space titanium, he rains terror with an army’s worth of firepower, while also mimicking Godzilla’s special powers.

Before Robocop, this prototype was created to serve as a means of law enforcement. Built by Omni-Consumer Products, this machine was unveiled with a few kinks to work out. It may not be his fault he’s so poorly designed that he ignores any sign of complacence; but ignorance is no excuse for evil. What kind of policing was this machine intended for anyway? Oh, Detroit, right…

But, a freak lightning strike gives it a soul and a hilarious personality that allows this machine to understand the meaning of death. Number 5 trades in his back-mounted laser rifle for a toolbox, and spends his time searching for new input while hanging with his buddies.
#5: The Iron Giant “The Iron Giant” (1999)

This fifty-foot-tall, metal-eating giant befriends a small boy after falling from space. This friendly robot with a heart of gold eventually discovers he's actually a powerful war machine, but he's taught to use his strength for good instead of evil. While the army hunts him down, he saves lives and aspires to follow the example of heroes like Superman.
#4: Gort “The Day the Earth Stood Still” (1951/2008)
As explained in the film, Gort is essentially a cop sent to keep peace on Earth. Not too many cops have the singular ability to destroy entire planets, so that’s probably something we should mention. In addition to being gigantic, he is also a robot of few words despite being humanoid in construction. With the ability to shoot lasers from its face, Gort may have a goofy name, but it’s a powerful killing machine.

At number three on our list is the leader of the Autobots, who adopts the alternate form of a truck. Believing freedom is the right of all sentient beings, Optimus leads a handful of similar robots to protect the humans of Earth from the evil Decepticons and their leader, Megatron. It’s Optimus Prime who’s the poster boy for all that is good thanks to his bravery, loyalty, honor and memorable speeches.
#2: R2D2 & C3PO “Star Wars” saga (1977-)
One is a loudmouthed, golden protocol droid that is fluent in over six million languages. The other is a brave astromech robot that resembles a garbage can. Together, the duo aids the rebel alliance by delivering comic relief, and the plans to the Death Star. They also rescue the film's heroes from a trash compactor, and recruit a tribe of teddy bears to help defeat the evil Empire.
