VOICE OVER: Phoebe de Jeu WRITTEN BY: Francesca LaMantia
You can't help but sympathize with these characters. For this list, we'll be looking at those TV characters who you'll look at and go “same.” Our list “Friends,” “New Girl,” “Seinfeld,” “Parks and Recreation,” “Boy Meets World,” and more! Join MsMojo as we count down our picks for the Top 10 Most Relatable TV Characters.

#10: Ben Wyatt “Parks and Recreation” (2009-15)

Also in:

Top 10 Most Hilarious Bloopers from Parks and Recreation

Ben can be very blunt and direct with people, which can make him seem like a bit of a jerk upon first meeting him. As you get to know him more throughout the show, though, he turns out to actually be a nice guy just trying to do his job. We’ve all found ourselves in positions before where we were misjudged due to circumstances out of our control. Ben, however, quickly becomes a loveable, fan favorite character, probably because his level of weirdness feels so refreshingly familiar.

#9: Larry David “Curb Your Enthusiasm” (2000-)

Also in:

Top 10 Most Hilarious Larry David Moments on Curb Your Enthusiasm

Larry David plays a fictionalized version of himself acting out dramatized versions of stories from his life, which is probably exactly what makes the character feel so real. It also helps that much of the dialogue on this show is improvised, so it comes across as genuine and never rehearsed or forced. As Larry acts out his life experiences onscreen, whether it’s his frustration on airplanes or just his general annoyance with people, viewers feel like kindred spirits along for the ride on his journey.

#8: Amber Holt “Parenthood” (2010-15)

Things are never perfect for Amber, but she always manages to make things work for her. She is often insecure, but she is tough, kind, and resilient. When she moves away from home, her apartment is kind of a dump, but she loves it and makes the most of it. When she gets pregnant, it's scary at first, but she leans on her family for help and guidance. Who hasn’t felt just like Amber at some point? No matter what life throws at her, she just pulls through. She is so endearing, you just can’t help but feel for her.

#7: Hannah Horvath “Girls” (2012-17)

Also in:

Top 10 Stars You Forgot Were on Hannah Montana

Hannah basically starts out as that mean stereotype of millennials. She has no job, she still relies on her parents for money and a place to live, and she seems to have no direction in life. But truthfully, she is just like every young adult these days just trying to figure out life. We’ve all hit that point where it occurred to us that no matter what we studied or how well we did in college, our major doesn’t guarantee us a job in our field. Or that technology grows faster than we can learn the skills that will make us hireable. Hannah is just a young woman struggling to become a real adult.

#6: Cory Matthews “Boy Meets World” (1993-2000)

Also in:

Top 10 Cory & Shawn Moments on Boy Meets World

Okay, so his lifelong relationship with Topanga – as adorable as it is – might be pretty unrealistic. But who can't relate to Cory stumbling his way through life? He feels pretty average compared to his friends and family, and struggles to figure out exactly who he is. From childhood through adulthood, the entire show is all about Cory just trying to figure out this whole life thing, it’s right there in the title. In the 90s, television was saturated with pretty and popular main characters, but Cory Matthews is a champion for the awkward and average.

#5: Rachel Green “Friends” (1994-2004)

Also in:

Top 20 Rachel Green Looks We Would Totally Rock Today

Whether it’s her boy-crazy side, her spoiled side, her badass side, or her career-driven side, there’s a little part of Rachel Green that reminds us all of ourselves. Out of all the friends, she grows the most throughout the show. They all seem to have their lives pretty well put together and she has no idea what she’s doing. We’ve all been there. She starts out as a completely sheltered daddy’s girl and grows into a high-powered business woman. And like many women, she is pressured to choose between her career and love life. There’s a little bit of Rachel Green in all of us.

#4: Lizzie McGuire “Lizzie McGuire” (2001-04)

Also in:

Top 10 Times Lizzie McGuire Tackled Serious Issues

Lizzie McGuire is your basic everywoman. She's not one of the popular kids, but she's not one of the losers. She has her best friends, and she has her bullies, two parents who try way too hard, and an annoying sibling. Her story reminds all of us what middle school was like. Her triumphs, her failures, and her awkwardness all feel so familiar. With the sort of lesson of the week type episodes, Lizzie learns about herself, about love, and about life as she grows up throughout the show.

#3: Nick Miller “New Girl” (2011-18)

Also in:

Top 10 Times Nick Was the Best Character on New Girl

Nick is kind of a mess. He's a fully-grown adult, who's kind of lost in life, gets angry for seemingly no reason, and doesn't exactly like himself. But hey, having it all together is kind of overrated. We can’t all be Schmidts. We’ve all had moments where we didn’t feel so good about ourselves, or thought our lives were going nowhere, or just felt irrationally angry. We are all Nick Miller from time to time. But Nick Miller is proof that it’s okay to feel like a mess sometimes.

#2: Elaine Benes “Seinfeld” (1989-98)

Also in:

Top 20 Hilarious Elaine Moments on Seinfeld

Elaine is highly intelligent, and yet spends much of the series struggling through mostly meaningless jobs, and she has dopey male friends who seem to fall ass backward into success. Every woman has felt like Elaine. These days she is even looked at as a feminist icon for her representation of women breaking through the glass ceiling. And she has occasional hilarious freakouts that mirror what goes on in all of our heads. Who could forget the time when she got stuck on the subway? Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions: Phil Dunphy “Modern Family” (2009-) Brooke Davis “One Tree Hill” (2003-12) Ian Gallagher “Shameless” (2011-)

#1: Liz Lemon “30 Rock” (2006-13)

Also in:

Top 10 Most Relatable Disney Channel Characters

Liz represents all women in the workplace. She’s the creator of a “SNL”-like sketch comedy show and did all the hard work getting it to be such a success, and yet she is stuck under the thumb of some egotistical male executive who just shows up and thinks he knows better than her. Liz is kind of like the mom of the whole crew. She is always taking care of everyone and holding everything together, while trying to juggle her own career and social life. Sound familiar?
