Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 Most Relatable New Girl Moments. For this list, we’ll be looking at all the times the show made us think: “Same!” Fair warning - there are spoilers ahead. If you “youths” think we missed any crucial moments, let us know in the comments below!

#10: Inside Wounds Vs. Outside Wounds

“Panty Gate”

Nick Miller is truly an old man trapped in a thirty-something-year-old’s body. However, that must be why he’s so wise. While everybody is going through some sort of love crisis, Nick suggests the perfect cure: drink the pain away. “You treat an outside wound with rubbing alcohol. You treat an inside wound with drinking alcohol. Science.” Maybe it’s because he owns the bar, or because he’s already a few sheets to the wind - but his advice is pretty solid. While it’s not particularly healthy to drink after every inconvenience, sometimes you just need to go to the local bar with friends to kick back and take your mind off of whatever’s stressing you out.

#9: Adulting

“A Father’s Love”

As a kid, we dream of the freedom of adulthood. You can go wherever you want, there’s no one to answer to, and eating ice cream for dinner is acceptable. But that’s only one side of the coin. We don’t really think about the responsibilities we’re going to have as adults, and the added societal pressures to be at a certain place by a certain time. We don’t all have a house by thirty or land a dream job right after graduating college. But that’s okay! Success is measured in many different ways. It’s normal to feel behind in life sometimes, but it doesn’t necessarily make it the truth.

#8: Birthday Craze

“Birthday”

Everybody loves an excuse to party! Like many of us, Jess gets a little too invested in her birthday. It’s tough not to fall into the hysteria of celebrating yourself. There’s a little selfish delight in having a day that’s all about you - but maybe we put a little too much pressure on the whole affair. Like most big events, planning and executing the perfect birthday can be more stressful than fun. It’s easy to be let down when the expectations are so high. If you’re lucky, you’ll be surrounded by people you love who can give you the celebration you deserve.

#7: What Are You, Nuts?

“Fluffer”

The plus side of talking to yourself is that you’ll always be entertained. Aside from the simplistic hilarity of Nick’s silly little joke to himself, it's the way that he immediately breaks down afterward that gets us. We can all relate to being irrationally triggered by something and switching emotions on a dime. Life can be simultaneously amusing and harrowing. You may even use humor to mask difficult feelings at times. The seamless transition from giggles to sobs really strikes a chord. Even Jess gets a kick out of it. We’ve all been there before, Miller.

#6: Takeout > Workout

“Menus”

Maybe we’re getting old, but it’s getting a lot harder to stay active. You might have even been an athlete growing up, but by the time you start nearing your thirties, you start to question if this is the same body that used to endure endless hours of training. While having a friend or coach to keep you accountable may help, sometimes that couch just starts calling your name! It’s hard to resist the thought of calling it quits and ordering in. That dream body will just have to wait for that Chinese food craving.

#5: Wild Friday Night

“Teachers”

Working for the weekend implies big plans, wild parties, and nonstop action, right? Well, not always. Sometimes you just need to unwind with a few close friends. The boys' wild Friday night is anything but - as they opt for some quality time in the loft. With the absence of a female roommate for once, they try to think of all the things they can’t do when Jess is around. Though it may have started as a more rambunctious thought, they actually end up in a place most of us do when we get some free time - productive mode. As you get older, the thought of cleaning while drinking sangria becomes much more appealing than going to a club for an overpriced drink.

#4: Accepting Compliments

“Menus”

This one is for the ladies who can’t ever just say “thank you” to a compliment. Why do we always deflect? When someone says you’re pretty - you don’t need to respond with “Oh no I’m not… really?” Women, specifically, have the most difficult time just accepting a kind comment. We often try to deflect, or hastily reciprocate, or even denigrate ourselves to avoid a simple “thanks!” It’s become sort of a societal norm to over-respond to compliments, or just try to change the topic altogether. It’s uncertain if that comes from a place of discomfort or just plain conditioning, at this point, but it sure is a difficult habit to break.

#3: Oh the Exes

“Backslide”

You’re single, you’re lonely… but who’s always around when you hit a low point? That one ex. It’s easy to go back to someone from your past, especially when it’s been a while since the breakup. Time heals all wounds - or at least makes you temporarily forget the pain you went through with the wrong person. Being alone for too long can even have you making excuses for behaviors you wouldn’t allow in the past. Nick even had to make himself a video to remind him of the suffering he could be in if he went back to his ex. But sometimes even that’s not enough. It may not be right, but the heart wants what it wants.

#2: Saturday Is for Sleeping

“Secrets”

If you work Monday through Friday at the same time each day - you know how much of a blessing it is to not set that alarm for Saturday morning. There’s something about sleeping in and waking up on your own accord. You feel more rested and positive about the day ahead. So we totally understand why Winston loses his cool when his roomies wake him up on his day off. Somehow it’s worse to be jolted awake by a raucous than an alarm clock. Adulting is stressful, so it’s important to cherish the small rituals that bring us joy… like waking up at noon every once in a while.

#1: Roommates

Multiple

To children, grown-ups are independent beings with big jobs and even bigger houses. As an adult, you see how arduous that is to achieve. The cost of living is astronomical! It’s not entirely feasible to own a home by thirty anymore. The show depicts how many young adults need roommates to survive. Especially in a big city, it’s not uncommon to have to share a space and maybe not even have common amenities like a parking space. The Nuclear Family is no longer a standard - at least not for people under forty. Renting is the new owning.
