Top 10 Most Chaotic Award Show Speeches

Top 10 Most Chaotic Award Show Speeches
VOICE OVER: Phoebe de Jeu WRITTEN BY: Sammie Purcell
These award show speeches got chaotic. For this list, we'll be looking at the times our favorite celebs got a little too over-excited at the podium. Our countdown includes Will Ferrell, Adrien Brody, Nicki Minaj, and more!

#10: Will Ferrell “22nd MTV Movie & TV Awards” (2013)

Will Ferrell and Aubrey Plaza are two of the funniest living people on the planet. So, there’s no surprise that when you get them together, things get a little funky. In 2013, Ferrell won a special honor at the MTV Movie Awards, the Comedic Genius award. During his speech, Plaza randomly came out and tried to wrestle Ferrell’s golden popcorn bucket out of his grasp. The interruption was apparently not planned, causing a very confused Ferrell to ask Plaza if she was okay while she weakly tried to take control of the award. While we’re a bit confused by the whole thing, we can’t help but chuckle.

#9: Kristen Stewart “18th MTV Movie & TV Awards” (2009)

Top 10 Hilarious Kristen Wiig Impressions on SNL

Has there ever been an actor that was more suited to their character than Kristen Stewart to Bella Swan? We’re going to venture to guess no. And no moment proved it more than this charmingly awkward speech at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards. After bumbling her way through, Stewart picks up her golden popcorn bucket before promptly letting it tumble to the floor. Her embarrassed reaction is adorably chaotic, but nothing is better than Robert Pattinson’s inability to quit laughing. We hope K-Stew continues on her merry, awkward way, uncomfy and unbothered.

#8: James Franco “75th Golden Globe Awards” (2018)

If there’s one actor who’s more chaotic than James Franco, or really anyone in Hollywood, it’s Tommy Wiseau. The director of 2003’s “The Room” finally got some recognition for making the best worst movie ever. In 2018, Franco won a Golden Globe for playing Wiseau in a film about the making of the film, “The Disaster Artist.” Franco delivered a speech about Wiseau’s relationship with Hollywood and thanked the artist, while inviting him on stage. But when Wiseau reached for the microphone to say a few words himself, he was physically denied by Franco. Many of Wiseau’s fans were upset that he didn’t have a chance to speak.

#7: Adrien Brody “75th Academy Awards” (2003)

This was a very chaotic speech for a very depressing win. In 2003, Adrien Brody won the Best Actor Oscar for his role in “The Pianist,” a movie about a Jewish man’s struggle during World War II. When Brody won the award, he didn’t start things off stoically. Instead, he walked onstage, grabbed presenter Halle Berry, and proceeded to kiss her full on the mouth. Berry did not know that Brody was basically going to ambush her with a kiss onstage, and later told Andy Cohen she just went with it. In hindsight, it’s a very awkward and creepy stain on the Oscars.

#6: Christine Lahti “55th Golden Globe Awards” (1998)

Even when you’re at the Golden Globes, sometimes, nature calls. There have been plenty of moments where actors or performers got stuck in the bathroom when their name was called for winning an award. We love watching poor Renée Zellweger run from the loo to accept her 2001 award, but nothing beats Christine Lahti. When Lahti’s name is read out for her win in 1998, the camera wildly pans around the room looking for her. Eventually everyone finds out she’s in the bathroom, causing presenter Michael J. Fox to say that she’s “indisposed”. Lahti handles it all in stride, but it’s funny watching everyone - including Robin Williams - vamp until she arrives.

#5: Jacqueline Bisset “71st Golden Globe Awards” (2014)

In 2014, Jacqueline Bissett started off the Golden Globes with a bang. Bissett won Best Supporting Actress for her role in “Dancing on the Edge,” and her speech was just the second of the night. After a long walk to the stage, Bissett takes a while to get started. Her long silence rouses another cheer from the audience, and things just get weirder from there. She then sighs, gasps, and laughs her way through a bizarre speech. At one point, the television station bleeped out part of her speech, and at another point, the play off music started too soon. The whole thing was just a wild, weird mess we will never forget.

#4: Jennifer Lawrence “85th Academy Awards” (2013)

During the beginning of her career, Jennifer Lawrence might as well have been synonymous with chaos. Her Oscar campaign for her role in “Silver Linings Playbook” was a blast for all involved, and she capped it off wonderfully when she won the Best Actress Award at the ceremony. On her way up the stairs to accept, Lawrence ate it. She tripped, and spawned dozens of rumors that the moment was planned or faked. But according to Lawrence, it was all real. What a surreal, chaotic, perfect moment in time.

#3: Nicki Minaj “32nd MTV Video Music Awards” (2015)

It might as well have been the shot heard around the world. Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj were two of the biggest pop stars in the world in 2015, and at the Video Music Awards, sparks flew. Before the ceremony, Minaj had stated on social media that she didn’t think her song “Anaconda” was nominated for Video of the Year because she wasn’t a thin, white woman, a la Taylor Swift. While Swift and Minaj reportedly made amends over the statement, Cyrus gave her input, calling Minaj “not very polite.” On the night of the ceremony when Minaj won for Best Hip-Hop Video, she ended her remarks with “Miley, what’s good?” Meme culture was forever changed.

#2: “Moonlight” “89th Academy Awards” (2017)

Is there anything more chaotic than a Best Picture mix up? Maybe, but we’ll get to that later. In 2017, the big front runner for the Best Picture Oscar was Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land.” When it was announced as the big winner of the night, nobody was very surprised. But then, the impossible happened. The “La La Land” cast and crew get through some of their thank-yous before someone comes on stage and announces that the real winner is “Moonlight.” It feels like a cosmic joke, but it’s not. And watching everyone’s reactions and facial expressions is one of the most unforgettable parts of the night.

#1: Taylor Swift “26th MTV Video Music Awards” (2009)

We’re going to let you finish, but this is the most chaotic award show moment of all time! In 2009, the culture changed forever. A young, fresh-faced Taylor Swift was in the process of accepting her award for Best Video by a Female Artist. Then, Kanye West suddenly appears onstage. He grabs the mic from Swift, and proceeds to congratulate Beyoncé for having one of the best videos of all time - in his opinion, at least. Regardless of whether West was correct in his assessment of the quality of the videos, it was a fairly intense and rude thing to do. And the ripple of effect of this moment has had legs like no other.
