The 2018 Met Gala was a bit of a mishap for Selena. She wore a delicate white and sheer dress by Coach to fit the theme “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” However, her outfit was somewhat looked over because of her heavy tan, which Selena revealed was an accident in do-it-yourself makeup. At the time, the actress filmed a cheeky video of herself running away from the party. In 2021, she shared some more behind-the-scenes info in a Vogue Beauty Secrets video. Fans were charmed by her candid honesty and willingness to laugh at herself for not realizing her mistake on fashion’s biggest night.

Selena knows how to help out her friends and fans alike. In 2021, she modeled for her friend Theresa Mingus’ body positive swimwear brand, La’Mariette. The steamy photos showed the singer embracing her body and rocking confidence along with the colorful ensembles. Announcing the collaboration on Instagram, Selena wrote, “what I love about this brand is that it celebrates women who love their bodies unconditionally.” This wasn’t the first instance of Selena stepping up for body positivity. The previous year, she shared a photo of her posing in a blue one piece, also from La’Mariette, proudly showing off a scar from her kidney transplant.

Music video aside, in real life there’s no “Bad Blood” between these two. In fact, Selena has been friends with Taylor Swift since they met backstage at a Jonas Brothers concert in 2008. Throughout the 2010s, the two were spotted together at premieres and awards ceremonies. Selena even joined Taylor onstage at Madison Square Garden during Taylor’s 2011”Speak Now” tour to perform her song, “Who Says.” Four years later, she did it again, this time singing “Good for You” on the “1989” tour. The world-famous friends have shared their support for each other for over a decade, managing to keep their relationship relatable even as two of the biggest stars on the planet.

#7: Making “Selena & Chef”

Even while quarantined during the COVID-19 pandemic, Selena stayed busy. She released an at-home cooking show with HBO Max called “Selena & Chef” in August of 2020. The unscripted program gave viewers a look into Selena’s life at home with her friends and family members. Each episode, Selena video chats with a different chef who teaches her a few recipes. As an amateur cook, Selena captures a familiar balance of fear and adventure in the kitchen. The show also donates $10,000 each episode to a charity of the chef’s choice. “Selena & Chef” is a charming testament to Selena’s passions. Watching one episode is enough to get your stomach rumbling — and chances are if Selena can cook it, you can too.

#6: Grammy Nomination Reaction

Despite being a celebrated artist for many years, Selena Gomez didn’t earn her first Grammy nomination until the 2022 awards. When she learned she had been nominated for Best Latin Pop Album, she confessed that she had an emotional response. Her album, “Revelación, was a tribute to both her Mexican-American heritage and her Latin fans. Selena even reacquainted herself with the Spanish language, which she had spoken fluently as a child, in order to make the record. Fans were impressed with the authenticity of her journey and shared her joy in its success.

#5: Support of Charities

The list of charities Selena Gomez has supported goes on and on. From becoming a UNICEF ambassador at age 17 to volunteering on World Kindness Day to help young girls build self-esteem, Selena has worked to help those less fortunate in a variety of ways. In 2012, the Make-A-Wish foundation gave Selena an award for granting 91 wishes to children in just 5 years. Her kindness also extends to animals. She has adopted at least 5 dogs and is a proud rescue pup parent. Turns out “Kill Em With Kindness” isn’t just a hit song for Selena.

#4: Roasting Her Co-stars

As a seasoned actress, Selena knows her way around a television set. But she’s not above joking on her “Only Murders in the Building” co-stars, Steve Martin and Martin Short. When the leads of the Hulu show reunited to film Season Two, Selena posted a celebratory video to her TikTok. The video showed the older men talking about collecting art. In the caption, she wrote, “Day one -back with these dads.” The lighthearted roast soon gained over one million likes on the social media platform, proving Selena’s good humor is appreciated amongst fans and followers.

#3: Launching Rare Beauty

Add “business mogul” to her list of titles. Selena Gomez started a makeup line in 2020 with a mission that’s beautiful inside and out. The products, which are all vegan and cruelty-free, are marketed with the goal of breaking down unrealistic standards of perfection. The brand also contributes 1% of all sales to the Rare Impact Fund, which raises money to reduce the stigma around mental illness. Selena’s intentions for the brand seem “rare” in the makeup world — for her, it’s all about embracing your own uniqueness instead of comparing yourself to others.

#2: Openness About Health

Selena’s honesty and candor has always impressed her fans. She has been open about her struggles with bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety, as well as her diagnosis with the autoimmune disease lupus. When she underwent a kidney transplant in 2017, she posted a heartfelt tribute to her donor and friend, Francia Raisa, on Instagram. Selena is also transparent about taking breaks from social media, which she has done even while at the height of her fame, in order to focus on her mental health. Her vulnerability and work as an advocate has inspired many fans to be more open about their own health journeys.
