#10: Filet-O-Fish

A McDonald’s classic, the Filet is a non-traditional fast food item, consisting of a fried pollock patty, a steamed bun, tartar sauce, and as of 2014, a slice of cheese. Invented in 1962 by Lou Groen, the Filet-O-Fish was the first non-hamburger menu item that McDonald’s introduced, which was originally meant to satisfy religious individuals who could not eat meat on Fridays. As the fish patty contains fewer calories than a meat one, with an average Filet-O-Fish containing only 380 calories, this sandwich may be an alternative for those people who are counting calories. It’s a true McDonald’s staple.

#9: Double Cheeseburger

The double cheeseburger took McDonald’s by storm when it was introduced on the now-famous Dollar Menu. Containing two hamburger patties and two slices of cheese, it’s a simple concoction, but it helped McDonald’s in ways no other hamburger on the menu could. When McDonald’s reported their first losses in 38 years in 2003, the double cheeseburger helped revitalize sales due to its low cost and delicious taste. Today, many people still order the double cheeseburger, even proving that it and the Dollar Menu were a resounding success.

#8: McFlurry

A dessert staple, the McFlurry provides a great alternative to a milkshake. The McFlurry consists of soft serve ice cream, complete with your own personal choice of sweet toppings, ranging from chunks of Oreo to Rolo. The McFlurry has remained a McDonald’s classic ever since its inception due to its relatively low cost and its unique personal approach to the dessert, as it allows each individual to personalize his or her own McFlurry to his or her liking. While the soft serve ice cream on its own is delicious, the myriad toppings associated with the McFlurry make it that much better.

#7: McChicken

This chicken sandwich is obviously popular, as it was brought back on three separate occasions after being taken off the menu. A simple sandwich, the McChicken consists of a breaded chicken patty, lettuce, and mayonnaise. Originally introduced in 1980, the McChicken didn’t meet sales expectations the first time around and that’s why it was initially removed from the menu. After being reintroduced in 1988, it was again taken off in 1996, only to be reintroduced yet again in 1998 due to overwhelming fan demand. Not only is it delicious, but also its constant revitalization only proves how popular it is with customers.

#6: Sundae

Just like the McFlurry, the Sundae offers soft serve vanilla ice cream with a twist, providing customers with delicious alternatives to suit their own personal tastes. Along with the soft serve ice cream, the McDonald’s sundae arrives complete with your choice of strawberry, caramel, or hot fudge sauce. The sundae contains roughly 350 calories, about as much as the Filet-O-Fish, so while some may distance themselves from the sundae due to high caloric content, there is no denying its sweet taste and popularity.

#5: Egg McMuffin

This classic sandwich revolutionized the fast food industry when it was introduced in the early 1970s. The signature Egg McMuffin consists of a slice of Canadian bacon, a fried egg, and a slice of cheese in between an English muffin, with available variants. At the time of release, fast food restaurants only served lunch and dinner, but with the introduction of the McMuffin, McDonald’s introduced breakfast options and sales soared far above competitors. It helped the restaurant establish its reputation as king of the fast food industry and is still popular with breakfast lovers today.

#4: Quarter Pounder

The Quarter Pounder is appropriately named, as the burger consists of a quarter of a pound of meat, complete with toppings of pickles, onions, cheese, ketchup, and mustard. Created in 1971 and introduced nationwide one year later, the Quarter Pounder was invented for those who, according to its creator Al Bernardin, “wanted a higher ratio of meat to bun.” He definitely succeeded, as the Quarter Pounder is still a very popular item over 40 years later, especially among those with big appetites, and remains one of McDonald’s staples.

#3: Chicken McNuggets

Top 10 Most Delicious Ways to Eat Chicken

McDonald’s famous Chicken McNuggets were introduced nationwide in 1983, and consisted of boneless pieces of chicken that’ve been battered and deep-fried. While it’s not the healthiest item on the menu, it is definitely one of the tastiest. It also comes with your choice of dipping sauce, thus accounting for personal tastes. While the McNugget has faced its fair share of controversy surrounding ingredients and questionable preparation practices, there is no denying the popularity of the item, especially among children, as it allows for a quick, easy, and non-messy meal.

#2: French Fries

A true McDonald’s staple, their French fries are famous around the world for their unique taste and texture. While most fast food restaurants provide thick fries, McDonald’s offers customers a thinner fry, complete with loads of salt. Yum. Coming in various sizes, the fries compliment any McDonald’s meal, or you can just eat them by themselves. Either way, they are delicious. As much as people may argue about the food at McDonald’s, there is no denying the impact that McDonald’s fries have had on fast food culture.
