After a decade of success following her time on American Idol, Kelly offered up this song in appreciation of her family, friends and fans. Co-written by Clarkson along with Eric Olson and Jason Halbert, the song charted in 16 countries and even scored the top spot on the Billboard Dance Club songs chart. The track earned firm critical praise for her powerful vocals and is a joy to listen to for critics and non-critics alike.

#9: “Miss Independent”

The first single off her debut album, this track focuses on a woman who shields herself from heartache by avoiding relationships, although she eventually relents and finds love. Certified gold in the United States and Australia, “Miss Independent” became a top 10 hit in five countries, including a number one on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart. As a song about self-reliance, the music lends the song the feel of an anthem and who are we to argue.

#8: “Mr. Know It All”
Stronger (2011)

Top 10 Most Incredible Kelly Clarkson Covers

Clarkson has said this song represents “everything (she is) as a woman and a singer”, so it clearly holds a special place in her heart. Certified triple platinum in Australia and regular old platinum in Canada and New Zealand, “Mr Know it All” scored the top spot in Australia, South Korea, and the US Adult Top 40. It even saw crossover success, scoring a 38 on the Billboard Hot Country charts. It may be an empowering song about a man who wrongly thinks he has woman figured out but the rest of us know it’s a pretty great tune.

#7: “My Life Would Suck Without You”
All I Ever Wanted (2009)

Also in:

Top 10 Greatest Kelly Clarkson Music Videos

A song about a woman trapped in a bad relationship for fear her life would suck without it, Clarkson wasn’t singing about herself but you wouldn’t know it from her passionate vocals. It’s a pop rock jam that is backed up with the catchiest guitars and some percussion that will never fail to get you moving.
With one critic calling it “pop perfection that could easily end up one of the biggest hits of the year”, we don’t know how anyone could argue that the song sucks.

#6: “Breakaway”
Breakaway (2004)

Kelly Clarkson Biography: 'American Idol,' 'Breakaway,' 'Stronger'

A song with an ethereal feel to it, Breakaway is about someone who wants a new life and takes a chance in order to get it, and while it was written for Avril Lavigne, we’re happy Kelly recorded it. Certified gold in three countries and charting in fourteen countries, “Breakaway” became a Billboard hit in 2004 and 2005, and was a global top 40 throughout 2006. The song was also critically acclaimed and became a favourite amongst the singer’s fan base.

#5: “Because of You”
Breakaway (2004)

Top 10 Songs to Listen to When You Feel like the Main Character

Taking the voice of a young woman looking back on her parent’s divorce, “Because of You” focuses on a woman who doesn’t want to make those same mistakes. It's safe to say “Because of You” spoke to many people, as the song became a platinum hit in the US, and reaching number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. Winning the artist a MTV Video Music Award for Best Female Video, Clarkson spoke about how she hopes she is remembered for this song and we definitely haven’t forgotten.

#4: “Already Gone”
All I Ever Wanted (2009)

Top 10 Songs to Dance Out Your Rage To

Written by Clarkson and writing partner Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, “Already Gone” is about letting go at the end of a relationship. The song has a selfless but hopeful feel to it despite knowing there is no going back. “Already Gone” charted in twelve different countries, but saw its biggest success in the United States where it sat atop of the Adult Top 40. Receiving universal acclaim from critics the song also earned its share of controversy when listeners noticed that the track beared similarities to Beyoncé’s “Halo”, which Tedder also co-wrote. It may have been a cheeky move but who can blame him?

#3: “Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)”
Stronger (2011)

The title track of Kelly’s fifth studio album, Stronger went on to be an anthem for anyone who has ever been put down, although the song’s sentiment about overcoming adversity speaks to nearly everyone. Earning critical acclaim and somehow turning Friedrich Nietzsche philosophical thoughts into a pop anthem “Stronger” sailed to the top of multiple Billboard charts including the Hot 100. Boasting sales of more than five million units, the song earned nominations at the Teen Choice Awards, MuchMusic Video Awards as well as three Grammy noms.

#2: “Behind These Hazel Eyes”
Breakaway (2004)

Top 10 Songs to Listen to When You Need a Confidence Boost

Arguably one of the singer’s most emotional songs, the lyrics were largely changed after her break up with a man who would then get married within a month of their separation. That spark also carried into the song's video which features Clarkson as a devastated bride, an image that often carries over to her live show. Built on a tight rock sound with thick, crunchy electric guitars, the song found global success and was a top 10 hit in the Billboard Pop, Mainstream Top 40, and Hot 100 charts and earned a stay at the top of the Adult Top 40.

Top 10 Best Revenge Breakup Songs

When most people think of Kelly Clarkson, this song is the first one that jumps to their mind. It may not have been her first hit but it was the one that truly gave us our first real introduction to Clarkson. Rejected by both Pink and Hilary Duff, the song embraces more of a rock sound than previous outings. It also dominated the Billboard, scoring a #1 on both the Pop 100 and the Mainstream Top 40 charts and just reaching the second spot on the Hot 100 and Adult Top 40. To call this Clarkson's most celebrated song may be an understatement.
