#10: Video Shop Theme Tunes “The Holiday” (2006)

Iris’ Los Angeles adventure is a love letter to movie magic, and nowhere is that more evident than in the video shop’s impromptu film score appreciation session. Miles, ever the pop-culture connoisseur, takes Iris (and us) on a whirlwind tour of cinema’s most iconic themes, from the triumphant synths of “Chariots of Fire” to the sweeping romance of “Gone with the Wind” and the instantly recognizable menace of “Jaws.” Watching Black channel Miles’ infectious enthusiasm, humming and scatting his way through each melody, is pure joy for any film fan everywhere. It celebrates music’s power to transport us all. Even Iris can’t resist engaging in a little “scroodle-ee-doo” later on.

#9: “Encarnación” “Nacho Libre” (2006)

Jack Black’s turn as Ignacio in “Nacho Libre” is a masterclass in comic sincerity, and nowhere is that more apparent than in his performance of “Encarnación.” He approaches the song with the gravitas of a true bolero, channeling the sweeping drama and longing of classic Mexican love ballads. Black dials back his trademark bombast, opting instead for a gentle, almost reverent delivery that crescendos into a heartfelt declaration. It’s a surprising display of restraint from a performer known for rock theatrics. Through this song, we glimpse a man who sees himself as the tragic hero of his own romantic epic; he represents the everyman’s dreams.

#8: A Seven Nation Monologue

“Saturday Night Live” (1975-)

Hey, remember that time Tenacious D randomly cameoed at the end of the “Spelling Bee” skit? Anyway, Black returned as host in season 51, ready to be inducted into the Five-Timers Club, only to find it in disrepair. To restore it, he turns to rock, building toward a “Seven Nation Army” performance. Bringing out that week’s musical guest, Jack White, inspired casting by the way. It’s not their first collaboration, but it still feels electric. White handles the distorted riffs while Black delivers a high-energy vocal performance that drives the whole moment forward. Together, they turn a simple premise into something unexpectedly explosive and utterly memorable.

#7: “Let’s Get It On”

“High Fidelity” (2000)

For most of the movie, Barry is the ultimate snob clerk: loud, judgmental, and picky about music. He constantly brags about his band while Rob doubts his actual ability. This performance takes place at a record-release party, where expectations are not high. However, the band locks into a smooth groove, and Black delivers a soulful, pitch-perfect, and genuinely passionate cover, setting aside the comedy and giving his real musical skill the undivided spotlight. It adds depth to Barry, showing his elitism comes from genuine love for his craft. Rather than a joke, the performance becomes a moment of credibility that completely redefines how both the audience and the characters see him.

#6: “Master Exploder”

“Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny” (2006)

“Master Exploder” is Tenacious D at their most gloriously over-the-top, delivering a heavy-metal fever dream that doubles as a parody and a tribute. This is the moment JB and KG unleash supernatural musical power, with vocals so intense they blow listeners’ minds. Literally. It riffs on the classic idea of music “melting faces,” turning the joke into a literal spectacle. What makes it so brilliantly unforgettable is Black’s total commitment. His operatic rock voice hits every note with conviction. "Master Exploder” is great because it treats heavy metal with the same intensity that a Shakespearean actor treats “Hamlet,” but with about 100% more exploding heads.

#5: “...Baby One More Time”

“Kung Fu Panda 4” (2024)

Black’s duet with CeeLo Green for the first “Kung Fu Panda” movie is iconic for sure. However, we never thought we’d see: “Kung Fu Panda,” “Tenacious D” and “…Baby One More Time” in the same sentence, but here we are! Black shared that director Mike Mitchell approached him about Tenacious D contributing a song to the movie’s end credits, and Black saw the perfect opportunity to cover Britney Spears’ breakout hit. It worked perfectly with the Kung Fu theme. Apparently, transforming teen pop into rock is no easy task, and it took Black “like 100 times” to perfect a version he was happy with. Now that’s a crossover that feels long overdue!

#4: “Steve's Lava Chicken”

“A Minecraft Movie” (2025)

When the adventurers enter the Overworld, they meet Steve, who quickly showcases a redstone-powered Lava Chicken Cooker. What could be a simple joke becomes unforgettable thanks to Jack Black’s delivery. He belts out the jingle with the gusto of a stadium headliner, transforming a handful of words into a rhythmic, unforgettable earworm. At just 34 seconds, “Steve’s Lava Chicken” made history as the shortest song ever to crack the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #78 and even breaking into the UK top 10. It’s a testament to Black’s unique ability to elevate small comedic beats into major cultural moments. Who knew a Minecraft chicken could rock this hard?

#3: “Peaches”

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (2023)

The King of the Koopas has always been larger than life, but in this movie, he finally gets to wear his heart on his spiked sleeve. “Peaches” transforms the iconic villain into a lovestruck performer, delivering a dramatic and humorous ballad. The song wasn’t originally in the script, but come on, when you have Jack Black, you can’t not get musical! With theatrical vocals and playful melodrama, it became a standout moment that combined comedy with genuine musicality. The performance was a hit, turning into a cultural phenomenon and earning major recognition, and even gave Black his first charting solo single. Now isn’t that just peachy!

#2: “School of Rock (Teacher's Pet)”

“School of Rock” (2003)

Every great rock movie needs a show-stopping finale, and “School of Rock” delivers in spades with “Teacher’s Pet.” After a whole film’s worth of training, Dewey Finn and his ragtag crew of pint-sized prodigies finally take the stage, ready to outplay their grown-up rivals. Black’s vocals are nothing short of electrifying; he nails every note with gritty, sustained power that would make seasoned rockers jealous, all while bouncing around the stage with boundless energy. Though they lose to No Vacancy, the crowd sees them as champions. Well, you know what they say, “It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock’ n’ Roll).”

Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.

“Sax-A-Boom,” “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” (2014-)

Black Treats a Plastic Toy Like a Stradivarius & Rocks “The Tonight Show”

“To Be An American,” “The Polka King” (2017)

A High-Energy, Hilariously Earnest & Delightfully Campy Patriotic Anthem

“Love Lifted Me,” “Bernie” (2011)

Black Delivers Sincere, Quirky Gospel Performance Revealing Bernie’s Charm & Unease

#1: “Tribute” (2002)

Tenacious D

“Tribute” is the ultimate showcase of Black’s dual superpowers: rock god bravado and razor-sharp comedic timing. More than just a parody, it’s a full-throttle celebration of musical myth-making, delivered with a wink and a wall of sound. When Tenacious D faces down a soul-hungry demon, their only hope is to perform the greatest song in the world, a song so epic, even they can’t remember how it goes. The inspiration comes from a real jam session where Black tried (and failed) to outdo Metallica’s “One,” sparking a conversation about the elusive quest for musical perfection. It’s both a send-up and salute to artists chasing that dream, cementing Black’s rock ‘n’ Roll legend status.
