VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton
These violent tragedies are a sobering reminder of how quickly life can change: unfortunately, mass shootings are nothing new, although sometimes it may seem as though there is a new incident every other week. While there is nothing to excuse the acts of a few lone gunmen, we can take some solace in the fact that these tragedies have helped law enforcement deal with future incidents. And, without acknowledging our past, we are destined to repeat it. In remembrance of those that died at the hand of a lone gunman during the Cumbria shootings on June 2nd, 2010, http://www.WatchMojo.com counts down ten of the most infamous mass shootings in history that occurred outside the United States.

#10 – Jokela school massacre (November 7, 2007 – Deaths: 9, Injuries: 12)

After posting a YouTube video revealing his upcoming crime, Pekka-Eric Auvinen entered his high school with a legally purchased semi-automatic and opened fire. After 40 minutes, he shot himself, but not before killing 8, including the school’s principal, who heroically tried to stop him. This was only Finland’s second school shooting, and it was motivated by Auvinen’s disdain towards humanity and interest in the United States’ Columbine massacre.

#9 – Kauhajoki school shooting (September 23, 2008 – Deaths: 11, Injuries: 1)

Less than a year later, Finland grieved again when Matti Saari entered his vocational school to execute classmates and set rooms ablaze. After killing 10, he died of a self-inflicted gunshot. Relevant YouTube videos Saari posted revealed his hatred of the human race, and led to his questioning by police the week before his crime. Lawmakers and police subsequently changed their tactics, and helped stop future tragedies.

#8 – Erfurt massacre (April 26, 2002 – Deaths: 17, Injuries: 1)

Though it remains unknown, the motive behind 19-year-old Robert Steinhäuser’s spree was likely linked with his expulsion from the school. Steinhäuser aimed only at teachers and administrators, though students and a cop were killed in the crossfire. After being inexplicably spared, one prof locked Steinhäuser in an empty room, where he committed suicide. Because of this event, a codephrase was invented to warn teachers of shootings over school intercoms.

#7 – Cumbria shootings (June 2, 2010 – Deaths: 13, Injuries: 11)

52-year-old Derrick Bird murdered his twin brother, and continued shooting until he had committed one of the worst gun crimes in British history. A huge manhunt ensued, but Bird was finally found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound hours later. Whether he was motivated by a family fight over his father’s will, his tax evasion, a personal grudge or something more, we may never know.

#6 – Azerbaijan State Oil Academy shooting (April 30, 2009 – Deaths: 13, Injuries: 13)

29-year-old student Farda Gadirov walked through hallways, killing students and staff at the prominent Azerbaijan State Oil Academy randomly as he went. As authorities closed in, the Georgian student with Azerbaijani background blocked himself off and fatally shot himself. Later, it was suggested that Gadirov was working under the auspices of a larger terrorist organization, the leader of which was targeted by Interpol.

#5 – École Polytechnique Massacre (December 6, 1989 – Deaths: 15, Injuries: 14)

During the Montreal Massacre, 25-year-old Marc Lépine separated males from females and killed 14 women, mostly engineering students, before shooting himself. Police were criticized for slow response times, but their overhauled procedures after Polytechnique helped minimize deaths at 2006’s Dawson College shooting. Because Lépine targeted feminists for ruining his life, the tragedy’s anniversary is marked as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

#4 – Hungerford massacre (August 19, 1987 – Deaths: 17, Injuries: 15)

Also in:

This small English town was forever changed when 27-year-old Michael Ryan walked through streets, shooting indiscriminately. After torching the house he shared with her, Ryan killed his mother and eventually barricaded himself in an empty school where he killed himself. His motives died with him, but psychologists suspected schizophrenia and psychosis. Because his guns used were legally obtained, this event prompted the Firearms Act of 1988.

#3 – Dunblane school massacre (March 13, 1996 – Deaths: 18, Injuries: 15)

Packing four legally obtained handguns, 43-year-old Thomas Hamilton walked through Scotland’s Dunblane Primary School, killing 16 kindergarten students and one teacher before shooting himself. It was later revealed that Hamilton had been dismissed as a Scout leader for taking inappropriate photos with children. In the wake of another of Britain’s worst ever firearms crimes, school security was improved, and personal gun ownership laws were significantly altered.

#2 – Port Arthur massacre (April 28, 1996 – Deaths: 35, Injuries: 23)

Motivated by media attention of the Dunblane massacre, 28-year-old Martin Bryant committed one of the world’s deadliest single-shooter crimes by targeting strangers, tourists and acquaintances on his rampage through Tasmania. After an 18-hour standoff, he was forced into the waiting arms of police by a fire he set, and received 35 life sentences + 1,035 years without parole. Following this crime, Australian gun control laws were tightened, and a firearm buy-back program began.

#1 – 2011 Norway attacks (July 22, 2011 – Deaths: 77, Injuries: 319+)

After detonating a bomb in downtown Oslo, far-right-leaning Anders Behring Breivik donned a police uniform and travelled to a summer camp on Utoya island to kill youths. 90 minutes later, he surrendered calmly to police. During his trial, Breivik claimed anti-Muslim sentiment motivated his so-called “necessary” actions. He was given to the stiffest sentence allowed by Norwegian law, and will likely remain incarnated for life. The tragic massacres improved law enforcement’s responses to similar circumstances and reminded us that, without acknowledging our past, we are destined to repeat it.
