These are the places that set the stage for the countless terrors that rest within their haunted interior. Join http://www.WatchMojo.com as we count down our top 10 favorite haunted houses in film.

#10 – The Maitland-Deetz Residence: “Beetlejuice” (1988)

Kicking off our list is this quaint Victorian home that rests atop a lonely Connecticut hill. But it’s not just any old house: this place is haunted by its previous owners, who were killed in a freak accident. It’s full of unique touches, but its most distinguishing feature is the attic: there, you’ll find a door to the afterlife and a gloomy miniature model set of a nearby town, which is the resting place of a pesky undead bio-exorcist. Oddly, the rest of the home’s unsettling décor was added by the new owners…

A mysterious supernatural force stalks the new owners of this otherwise ordinary suburban home, forcing the young couple to set up cameras to keep watch of the place. This proves that, when they try to sleep, the house hosts a slumber party for spirits. Doors slam, footsteps pound, and furniture is constantly moved around. Not even the bed is safe…

#8 – The Manor: “The Others” (2001)

Top 10 Haunted Houses in Movies Based on Real Life Houses

Located on a British island off the coast of France, this giant, remote country house is shrouded in fog and mystery. Graves occupy its grounds, hallways are lit with candles, faint voices and apparitions roam, and a piano plays in a locked room. This dark atmospheric setting is where the worlds of the dead and the living collide.

#7 – The Saeki Family Home: “Ju-On: The Grudge” (2002)

Also in:

The victims of a violent murder have cursed this dingy, gated home and wander its grounds as ghosts. A pale-faced boy, his cat and his gurgling mother are the vengeful spirits that dwell within the attic, closets and in every shadow. The phrase “no trespassing allowed” has never been so true, as anyone who is foolish enough to enter the home meets an unfortunate end.

#6 – 112 Ocean Avenue, Amityville, New York: “The Amityville Horror” (1979/2005)

Resting peacefully on the waterfront, this residence starts as an idyllic dream home for the Lutz family, but quickly turns into a nightmare. This real-life haunted house is the eternal home of the family that was murdered there, and they do not want to share it. To scare them off, these ghosts tear up the walls, rip doors from their hinges, shake cabinets and fiercely slam doors closed… Pretty much everything you don’t want in a roommate.

#5 – The Cabin: “The Evil Dead”/ “Evil Dead II” (1981/1987)

Top 10 Times Evil Dead Characters STUPIDLY Read the Necronomicon

A Tennessee mountain is the backdrop for the rickety cabin where an archaeologists’ unholy find is kept. That dark and dirty cabin and its surrounding forest are then haunted by demons and spooks due to the presence of the Necronomicon, or Book of the Dead. No other haunted house on this list features such unsettling things as a zombie corpse locked in the basement or a deer head that laughs at you…

#4 – Hill House: “The Haunting” (1963)

Another Top 10 Scariest Haunted Houses in Movies

There’s just something off about this old mansion, probably because of its disturbing history. The fright factor is emphasized by doors that always close on their own and mysterious forces that draw in the occupants. The supernatural is just inches away, as it teems within the walls: ghosts bang, giggle and cry behind every door, just far enough away to be out of reach.

#3 – The House on Haunted Hill: “House on Haunted Hill” (1959)

Also in:

The Shocking True Story of House of Gucci

You can’t get any creepier than an old asylum. This ancient loony-bin is filled with spider webs, cells, test chambers and mentally unstable spooks. Cause if there’s anything worse than a ghost, it’s a crazy ghost. At midnight, the windows and doors slam shut to prevent victims from escaping, because this house never lets anyone make it to the morning with their life.

#2 – The Freeling Family Home: “Poltergeist” (1982)

Suburban California is full of ordinary houses and ordinary families. This is not one of them. This house speaks through the white noise on the TV set and tries to suck the living into the closet, which happens to house a tentacled human-hungry orifice. Trust us: this is not prime real estate!

#1 – The Overlook Hotel: “The Shining” (1980)

Also in:

Top 10 Things You Missed in Disney's Haunted Mansion Movie

Taking the top spot on our list is the remote mountain hotel that needs to be looked after while it’s snowed in through the winter. The Overlook is the scariest haunted house of all time with good reason: there are creepy twins wandering the halls, a decaying corpse lady, an elevator that spews blood, a pig man, a ghost bartender, and a twisted hedge maze that’s just begging to see some “redrum.” Which is your favorite haunted house in film?
