Top 10 Best Video Game Trailers of 2020 So Far

There’ve been plenty of trailers to keep the hype alive this year! Welcome to WatchMojo, and today, we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 Gameplay Video Game Trailers of 2020 (So Far)! For this list, we’re looking at gameplay trailers that got us excited for a game’s release. Remember - we’re looking at GAMEPLAY trailers, meaning they have to show GAMEPLAY! So, unfortunately, the “Demon’s Souls” remake didn’t make the cut. Also, we are counting DLC trailers.

#10: Shadow Warrior 3 - 'Way to Motoko' Gameplay Trailer

Shadow of the Tomb Raider - Review

“Shadow Warrior 3” (2021)

Devolver Digital has been known for publishing crazy (and sometimes graphic) titles, so it would only make sense that they would publish the next installment in the “Shadow Warrior” series. During their video presentation in July 2020, the publisher released a trailer for “Shadow Warrior 3”, showing off the game’s vibrant visuals, insane enemies and bosses, and explosive weapons. There’s a ton of promise on display, and with a 2021 release window, we may not have to wait too long before we’re swinging around and blasting dudes into viscera...or setting off vicious traps.

#9: Super Mario Maker 2 – World Maker Update – Nintendo Switch

“Super Mario Maker 2” (2019)

WatchMojo Lady Loses It Playing Super Mario Maker 2

This trailer was bittersweet due to it showcasing the final update for “Super Mario Maker 2”, and Nintendo quickly reminded us of that at the very beginning. Regardless of the mildly somber news, we got a glimpse of what was arguably the biggest update in the game. Players would be given access to new power-ups like the “Super Mario Bros. 2” Mushroom, Goomba Hat, and POW Block Hat. However, the feature that really got us hyped was World Maker, which allows users to create multiple worlds filled with their own courses. In other words, it let you make your own “Super Mario” game!

#8: Star Wars: Squadrons – Official Gameplay Trailer

“Star Wars: Squadrons” (2020)

Has EA realized the potential behind “Star Wars”? Well, if “Jedi: Fallen Order” didn’t impress you enough, you might want to take a look at the trailer for the upcoming “Star Wars: Squadrons”. This trailer showed off just about everything the game has to offer - the single-player campaign, the 5v5 multiplayer mode, and even the different classes of ships you’ll get to pilot. It was loaded with information about what to expect, and that’s something a lot of trailers - indie AND AAA - fail to do. So, if you’re still on the fence about EA’s “Star Wars” games, maybe give this a watch? It could change your mind!

#7: Sackboy A Big Adventure - Announcement Trailer

“Sackboy: A Big Adventure” (TBA)

Top 10 Gameplay Trailers Nothing Like the Final Game

It has been way too long since we last saw Sackboy’s smiling, adorable face! Just when we thought there’d be another year of no “LittleBigPlanet” news, Sony revealed a new title during their PS5 event. Obviously, this doesn’t look like your traditional, 2D platformer “LittleBigPlanet”. The best way to describe this is Sackboy’s “Super Mario 3D World” with its colorful environments and charming visuals. Needless to say, this is something we’ll definitely be playing with friends and family as we step into the next generation of game consoles! Glad to have you back, Sackboy!

#6: GhostWire: Tokyo – Gameplay Reveal Trailer

“Ghostwire: Tokyo” (2021)

The last time we heard about “Ghostwire: Tokyo” was at E3 2019 where the passionate Ikumi Nakamura presented the project. Unfortunately, she has since left the project. Despite her departure, “Ghostwire: Tokyo” looks like a promising title for developer Tango Gameworks, the same studio behind the “Evil Within” games. You got eerie, trippy environments, headless school girls, and Slendermen with tattered umbrellas. Unsettling images of a bad Friday night aside, the game has presented a world mysterious enough to have piqued our interests as well as millions of other gaming and horror enthusiasts. 2021 can’t come soon enough!

#5: MK11 Kombat Pack - Official Spawn Gameplay Trailer

“Mortal Kombat 11” (2019)

10 Times Mortal Kombat Was CENSORED

While Spawn’s debut in MK11 was revealed in August 2019, we were left in hopeful suspense about how NetherRealm Studios would implement Todd MacFarlane’s anti-hero. Let’s be honest - Spawn was an odd choice for “Soulcalibur II”... Of course, you just can’t doubt NetherRealm’s love for comic book characters! This trailer showed off everything that makes Spawn such a badass from his moveset, fatalities, and even dialogue. In addition to a new Trivium song providing the trailer’s music, NetherRealm even got Keith David to reprise his role as Spawn. C’mon, who else would you get beside the definitive voice of Spawn? Michael Jai White? ...Actually, that’d be good for an alternate outfit or voice pack, but that’s a topic for another day.

#4: DOOM Eternal – Official Gameplay Reveal

There were already plenty of reasons to get hyped about the sequel to 2016’s “DOOM”, but this was the trailer that got us sending in our pre-orders. While it does show a good amount of cutscenes and story moments, the trailer provided enough gameplay to show off all the cool stunts we could pull off with the mechanics as well as unique features of the different weapons. It was also invigorating to hear a piece of Mick Gordon’s intense music, and seeing the original Cyberdemon (now named the “Tyrant”) gave us a wave of nostalgia. Needless to say, we were ready to raze Hell after seeing this trailer.

#3: Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time Announcement Trailer

“Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time” (2020)

Worst Video Game Movie of All Time: BloodRayne

The game may have leaked a couple of days before its official reveal, but that didn’t make the trailer any less thrilling to watch. What makes this trailer so significant is how this was the first look in the first new and original “Crash” game since 2010, when “Crash Nitro Kart 2” arrived on mobile platforms. Judging from what was shown, developer Toys for Bob is implementing classic “Crash” gameplay with a variety of new mechanics, ranging from new masks and powers to entire segments dedicated to series villain Cortex. We’re counting down the days to October 2!

#2: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart - Announcement Trailer

Ratchet And Clank Rift Apart Review

We’ve felt it’s been time for a new “Ratchet & Clank” game, and it came at a pretty convenient time. During their PS5 reveal event, Sony took some time to show off Insomniac’s latest entry in the Lombax and robot’s story - “Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart”. From what was shown, the game seems to be taking advantage of the PS5’s power to shower the player in particle effects and environmental destruction. Of course, the coolest part was how Ratchet and Clank could travel between dimensions on a dime. Hopefully the full game will give us just as many tools to wreak havoc and blow stuff up to see what the PS5 is really capable of!

#1: Horizon Forbidden West - Announcement Trailer

“Horizon Forbidden West” (2021) “Horizon Zero Dawn” was arguably one of the best PS4 games to have been released, and with the way it ended, there was no question that a sequel was in production. The only question was “when?” Looks like it isn’t far off as Sony released a trailer during the PS5 reveal event, and it was absolutely breathtaking seeing Aloy travel across fields and beaches, observing the new world. Not only do we get brief glimpses of what to expect gameplay-wise, but it leaves us with many questions about where the story is heading. Perhaps that’s a list we’ll address soon, but for the time being, we got roughly a year to wait before we can get our hands on “Horizon Forbidden West”.
