#10: Overworked Marge
“Homer Alone”
Any overworked parents out there are bound to relate to this one. Poor Marge has been put through the wringer trying to take care of her family. After one incident too many, she finally snaps and parks her car across the road, blocking traffic and refusing to move. If anyone tries coming near her, she roars at them like the MGM lion until they back off in fright. It’s only when Homer gets on the bullhorn and apologizes that the situation de-escalates. Admittedly, this one is more relatable than hilarious, but seeing her snarl at anyone who comes too close was enough to get a giggle out of us.
#9: Homer’s Trampoline Obsession
“Bart’s Inner Child”
One morning, Homer comes across the greatest thing in the universe – an ad for a free trampoline! Homer’s so excited that he forgets how to pronounce “Trampoline”, and nothing will stop him from achieving his prize – not even innocent bystanders. Unfortunately, the trampoline is too much of a safety hazard, so Homer has to get rid of it… or at least try to. Every attempt only causes physical and mental pain, much to Homer’s distress and our delight. Luckily, Bart offers the perfect solution to rid them of the trampoline. It still astounds us how easily Homer can switch from an oversized kid to a frustrated cartoon character within the same opening sequence.
#8: “Where Do We Get the Placebos?!”
“Marge in Chains”
Remember when “The Simpsons” predicted the pandemic all the way back in 1993? Here, the dreaded “Osaka Flu” has spread across Springfield, and the townsfolk are desperate for a cure. The only real “cure”, however, is bed rest, but they would rather panic some more than actually listen. They overturn a truck for no reason and unleash a swarm of killer bees, which naturally begets more panicking, with one man even trying to eat one of the bees. Another shining, on-the-nose example of the dangers of mob mentality and panicking, but we can’t deny that watching the townsfolk needlessly escalate a minor health crisis made us snicker. Seriously, why did they need to flip the truck over? It was wide open!
#7: Marge’s Fear of Flying
“Fear of Flying”
After a silly misunderstanding, Homer scores the family free airline tickets. But there’s one thing he didn’t account for – Marge is afraid of flying. At first, it’s tame; she tries to remain calm while looking for an excuse to get off the plane. Before long, it devolves into full-blown panicking, Marge running up and down the aisles, screaming “Let me off” repeatedly before they’re finally kicked off the plane. We should feel bad for laughing at her fears, but it’s hard not to snicker when she’s sprinting and shouting like a lunatic – the exterior shot of her hair racing past the windows doesn’t help in the least.
#6: PTA Panic
“The PTA Disbands”
Springfield Elementary is in the midst of some harsh budget cuts, and Principal Skinner and Mrs. Krabappel can’t come to a consensus about the matter. At an emergency meeting, it looks like the PTA might fall apart, and one man can’t stomach the concept. Without any warning, he leaps out of the window in fright… only to effortlessly leap back inside when reassured by Ned. He dusts himself off like nothing happened, while the rest of the crowd is still stunned, and we’re still snickering over how unhinged his reaction was. The fact that he leapt back in without breaking more glass is a miracle.
#5: Homer’s Unhinged Withdrawal
“Treehouse of Horror V”
In a spoof of “The Shining”, the Simpsons find themselves in a mountain lodge deprived of TV and beer. Homer quickly starts losing his marbles and tries to kill his family… but instead leaves us in stitches laughing. He screams gibberish at Marge, only to get frightened by his own reflection and fall down the stairs, knocking himself out. Obviously, we fear for Marge’s safety, but it’s impossible to take Homer seriously while he’s shrieking like a hyperactive baboon or falling over himself trying to be scary. Homer doesn’t have Jack Torrance’s killing instinct, but it’s a definite reminder not to deprive him of his beloved sustenance.
#4: Lisa the Lizard Queen
“Selma's Choice”
While visiting Duff Gardens, Bart dares Lisa to drink the “Water” at "The Little Land of Duff" ride. Unfortunately, even someone as bright as Lisa isn’t immune to peer pressure, so she drinks the water… and what happens next is hilariously trippy. The world starts melting in Lisa’s eyes, and she goes on a rampage – running through the park, cackling and dancing as she goes, before crowning herself the “Lizard Queen” and swimming naked in the Fermentarium. Thankfully, the park doctor, or someone who looks like a doctor, offers her enough medicine to bring her back to reality. Seeing the normally sensible Lisa go on a wild trip definitely taught us a valuable lesson… after we were done giggling, that is.
#3: Frank is Homer Simpson
“Homer's Enemy”
Frank Grimes was a realistic look at what it was like being coworkers with Homer. Though Homer genuinely tries to befriend and impress him, Grimes gets increasingly annoyed with Homer’s incompetence. Eventually, his sanity shatters, and he runs wild around the plant, imitating Homer and all his annoying habits and apparent success in life. This mental breakdown comes to a head when he grabs onto high-voltage wires, shocking himself to death. He mockingly called himself Homer the whole time, but the REAL Homer would’ve just brushed off the shock like it was nothing. We all love Homer’s antics, but if he were a real person, we’d all probably end up as crazy as Grimes.
#2: Ned’s Breaking Point
“Hurricane Neddy”
Even the nicest guys have their breaking points. Ned reached his after a hurricane destroyed his house, and the townsfolk failed to rebuild it. His normally upbeat, friendly demeanor is gone as he takes out his frustration on everyone, creatively insulting each and every one of them. Each insult is more scalding than the last; he even takes a swipe at Lenny, who had nothing to do with this whole ordeal. After roasting everyone else, he coldly calls Homer the worst human ever… ouch. He couldn’t even think of a creative insult for his oafish neighbor. Afterwards, Ned checks himself into a mental hospital while we’re still applauding how hard he roasted everyone.
#1: Marge’s Announcement(s)
“And Maggie Makes Three”
We laugh at these mental breakdowns, but most of them can leave lasting damage; just look at Homer. Before becoming a father, he had a full head of hair, but then Bart was announced, and in a panic, he screamed and ripped out a chunk of his hair. From then on, every time Marge announced that she was pregnant, more follicles were torn out of Homer’s head until all that was left were his iconic strands of hair. We want to feel bad for Homer making himself bald, but his reactions and Dan Castellaneta’s screaming make it impossible not to laugh. Plus, it established one of the most memorable hairstyles in all of animation.
