These Rick and Morty running gags will always get a laugh.
Whether you’re into science, zany cartoons or just hate the name Jerry, you can’t deny that “Rick and Morty” is absolute genius. Welcome to WatchMojo, and in today’s video we’re going to be counting down the top 10 running gags throughout the “Rick and Morty” series. From blink and you’ll miss them characters to intelligently crafted one liners, these are the recurring jokes related to the show that never fail to make us laugh - even if we have seen or heard them a squanch number of times.

#10: Rick's Burps

Frequent viewers of the show probably won’t even notice this one anymore, but Rick’s burps have become a trademark of the series, as the mad scientist always hovers somewhere between tipsy and blackout drunk. Whether they’re adding emphasis to a rant or merely a small pause during a dramatic showdown, there’s something about the seamlessness in which they’re worked into the script, courtesy of voice actor Justin Roiland, that makes them absolutely hilarious. Oh, and fun fact, the idea of the burping actually comes from comedian Foster Brooks, who was renowned for his drunk guy impersonation.

#9: Plumbus

Ah yes, the Plumbus. Everyone’s got a Plumbus in their house, right? In the bedroom, kitchen, bathroom. What would we do without them? For fans of interdimensional cable - more on that later - you’ll remember the ‘How They Do It’ episode where we got to see how Plumbuses are made. And when Stealy revealed it as one of his finds on “The Adventures of Stealy” show. You can even get a Plumbus owner’s manual included in the DVD or Blu-ray box of season two. Thank god for Plumbuses, right?

#8: Rick Belittling Jerry

Top 10 Crazy Things You Never Noticed in Rick and Morty

We all know a Jerry, right? Always trying to pass the blame and throw other people under the bus. Well, one person who certainly sees Jerry for exactly who he is, is Rick - and he lets Jerry know at every given opportunity. Whether he’s grilling him on how to fix his marriage, stand up for himself or, ya know, get a job, we’ve come to accept the fact that Rick rips Jerry apart on the daily. And so does the rest of his family, given the chance. I mean this is the guy that risked the life of billions to save his genitals. He deserves to be belittled, right? Anyway, that’s enough on that. Get a job, Jerry.

#7: Morty Almost Getting Laid

Top 10 Mortiest Morty Moments in Rick and Morty

Morty always ends up with a pretty bad deal when it comes to time travel and interdimensional adventures - whether he’s finding infinite numbers of himself being tortured endlessly, or he’s being attacked by an evil jellybean. Yikes. One thing that Morty consistently has trouble with however, is the ladies. For one reason or another, Morty always just misses out on the girls he likes, and it’s usually Rick’s fault. Even when he finds himself living out his wildest fantasies in his head or in another dimension, it doesn’t take long for Rick to come along and burst his bubble.

#6: "That's it Rick, I'm done"

Top 20 Crazy Rick and Morty Deaths

From one Morty-based entry to another next - as we can’t not shine a light on what Morty brings to the table as Rick’s pocket-rocket sidekick; doubt, cynicism, nervousness and a whole lot of groaning. It doesn’t matter what adventure they’re on, it’s become a running theme of the show that Morty puts his foot down and tells Rick “That’s it, I’m done”, or some variation on that, pretty much every episode. And let’s be honest, we’d probably have the same reaction too if our grandfather kept kidnapping us for dangerous alien adventures. Nah, just kidding. Imagine how cool that would be!

#5: Hilariously Weird Character Names

Also in:

Top 10 Hilariously Cringey Schitt's Creek Scenes

There is some seriously smart writing that goes into “Rick and Morty”. Not only the scientific aspect of it, but all of its obscure pop culture references too. That’s what makes its simplistic alien and character names all the more jarring and hilarious. Throughout each season, we’re introduced to a variety of wacky personalities, many of which have deeply dark, political or totally nonsensical agendas. Ironically, the one thing that stays consistent with each of them is their stupid names. Moopians, Boobloosians, Gromflomites - heck, even Mr. Poopybutthole and Birdperson. Sure, they could come up with sophisticated, science-based names, but where’s the fun in that!

#4: Alternate Dimension Rick and Mortys

Also in:

Top 10 Amazing Alternate TV Endings

One of the best and worst things about exploring different dimensions is that you can encounter alternate versions of yourself. For someone as intelligent as Rick and as suggestible as Morty, that can be pretty dangerous. Regardless of the storyline, you never know when another version of Rick and Morty are going to appear and shake things up - or simply flash-up in the background. There’s evil eye-patched Morty, Lizard Morty, Doofus Rick, the council of Ricks - the list goes on. And yet somehow, our dimension C-137 Rick and Morty always come out on top.

#3: Weird Universes

Also in:

Top 10 Weird TV Shows

With time and space travel being a huge part of “Rick and Morty”, it’s fair to say there is a lot of scope for variation in its numerous universes - and the writers flex their creative muscles whenever they get the chance. Outside of what we may deem as normal universes - and away from the plethora of Rick and Mortys we just mentioned - we are treated to the likes of Hamster-in-Butt World, the Tinyverse and the giant-headed Cromulon Dimension, where live music competitions are a life-threatening affair. Of course, there’s that epic escape sequence in which we see the phone universe, chair universe and pizza universe - the latter of which sees slices of pizza eating humans. Stuffed crust anyone?

#2: Interdimensional Cable

Also in:

Top 10 Best Rick and Morty Interdimensional Cable Moments Ever

Continuing our theme of skewed normality is a series of TV commercials, shows and movies from other dimensions. Yep, we’re talking about Interdimensional Cable. First seen in season one, it’s become a pop-up joke that gives us an insight into what makes other beings tick elsewhere in existence. Like the commercial for fake doors, or the “A-Team” tv show ripoff “Ball Fondlers”. And how can we forget the hit action movie “Two Brothers”! What really gives these tv spots charm are the semi-ad libbed voice overs, of which the likes of Justin Roliand can be heard cracking up in the background. It’s the little bits that make it work...

#1: Wubalubadubdub

Okay, so our number one spot doesn’t go to just the one catchphrase of Rick’s, but to all of them. The enigmatic Rick is without a doubt the posterboy of the show, and one of the reasons for that is his genius. Another is his ridiculous crudeness and penchant for catchphrases. From the aforementioned wubalubadubdub to shum-shum-schlippety-dop, the best thing about these is watching them be coined for the first time, first hand. Rick makes his own rules, and it’s hilarious to see him spit new catchphrases seemingly every episode, even if they don’t make sense, or are grotesquely offensive.
