Top 10 Fun Things you're NEVER Too Old For
#10: Trampolines
Granted, the level of fun one might have on a trampoline will always be dependent upon one’s physical strength and stamina. That said, we don’t think that any able-bodied individual with the desire to jump on a trampoline is gonna be disappointed. It’s a great way to connect with the innocence of youth, while at the same time doubling as a fun and easy way to exercise. The amount of time spent jumping on a trampoline may vary, but we don’t think that fun quotient is going to be in any danger of dripping, whether you’re six or sixty.
#9: Building Pillow Forts
One of the joys of having either kids or grandkids is the ability to feel young again by joining them in their favorite activities. Building a pillow fort, for example, is innocent fun that also happens to be creative and is limited only by the builder’s imagination. So parents or grandparents can take pride in helping their little one construct an elaborate fort full of twists and turns or simply assist the pre-school set in putting together a tiny little pillow fort of their very own. There’s no wrong way to do this activity; just dive in and have fun!
#8: Disney
Nostalgia can be a complicated thing, with our collective rose-colored glasses often tinting our childhood memories. Then again, rewatching a time-tested television show or movie often taps into that emotional dopamine provided to us by that aforementioned nostalgia. It can be a trip back to our pasts when we watched, let’s say a Disney classic for the first time. Or maybe it’s an actual trip to one of the Disney theme parks that’s an evergreen source of comfort and emotional stability. A sojourn into the past that we can take either solo as adults or with families and friends. The Disney brand has built an empire based upon these very emotions, and millions of satisfied customers returning year after year.
#7: Blowing Bubbles
It’s such a simple thing, really, but aren’t those often also the best things? Anyone can enjoy the act of heading outside on a warm summer’s day and blowing bubbles into the air, without a care in the world. A lot of people struggle with so much emotional weight, and it’s good to know that there remain some trusted, peaceful pleasures out there to calm us down. There’s no level of competitiveness at play here, just something we can do as humans to make each other happy. It could be a bubble dance party for a group of little ones, or just a solo bubble hunt to pass the time. There’s no wrong way to blow bubbles.
#6: Snowball Fights
They’re the sort of fights where everyone wins - combat that features some truly excellent weaponry of war. Take your pick between pillow fights or snowball fights. There’s no wrong answer here, just a fun time between you and your friends. Granted, pillow fights can take place almost anywhere, and at any time, but there’s something special about the wintertime setting of a good, proper snowball fight. How intense do yours get? Are you like Buddy the Elf, bringing the proverbial heat with a sick throwing arm? Or do you prefer to play defense, ducking, dodging and picking your spot? Either way, snowball fights are always a great time, at any age.
#5: Going to Amusement Parks
The amusement park industry has been big business for decades now, with absolutely no signs of slowing down. It speaks to the endurance of humanity’s desire to get out there and have fun, away from the confines of home. Local county fairs and massive, conglomerate amusement park chains alike bring young and old together for rides, unhealthy food and games for all ages. They’re places where love might have blossomed for the first time or where grandparents relive their youth by taking their grandkids on a ferris wheel. Amusement parks are an important part of our cultural heritage, and continue to connect us through the generations.
#4: Watching Cartoons & Animation
Viewers of a certain age will likely remember how Saturday was that all-important day of the week where cartoons reigned. But it’s not only those weekend blocks of animation that capture the imaginations of kids in the modern day. The expansive contemporary streaming landscape has enabled animated entertainment to thrive, with new additions constantly being added to the “on demand” business model. Then again, truly great entertainment never goes away; it exists forever, waiting to be shared by those who remember with those waiting to be inspired. So go and watch some cartoons today with somebody you love. You’ll be glad you did.
#3: Coloring
It’s not just for kids anymore. The rise of “adult coloring books” proves that we’re never too old as a society for a little bit of good, old fashioned coloring. Kids love to be creative with their coloring, and it’s this imagination that exists at the center of why we as people love to color. It can feel relaxing for adults and educational for kids, while also being extremely therapeutic after a hard day. Plus, with there being no wrong way to color, this activity is one of those evergreen hobbies that can take on a myriad of different forms, from the simple to the richly diverse and complex.
#2: Popping Bubble Wrap
It’s such a simple pleasure, really, but also an addictive one. Popping a good piece of bubble wrap is a habit we never want to break, however, something in which millions of people indulge on a daily basis. We know that bubble wrap is intended to keep fragile items safe in transit, but who are we kidding? We’d love to drape ourselves with bubble wrap in a manner similar to how George Costanza felt about velvet on that infamous episode of “Seinfeld.” Then, we’d be able to pop ourselves into oblivion without an ounce of shame.
#1: Building LEGOs
We’ve covered a lot of activities within this list that can be enjoyed by every age group, but there’s one specific brand that prides itself on never being able to be outgrown by anyone. Building and playing with LEGOs seems to be universal, from the most basic of blocks and sets to the most elaborate of creations undertaken by fully grown adults. Sure, accidentally stepping on a LEGO piece in the middle of the night is worse than being attacked by Ghostface or something, but that’s honestly a small price to pay for what LEGOs have given the world. This simple toy has provided unfettered imaginative play for everyone, creating utter magic in the process.
