Welcome to GetMojo, where we do the research, so you don’t have to! In this video, we’re offering our picks for the 10 best DIY moving essentials. Moving house is never an easy task. But you can make things much easier if you’re prepared. And by that, we mean having the right equipment to hand to tackle the multitude of tasks you’re going to come up against. So what kind of things should you have in your moving arsenal? Well, we’ve sifted through numerous online guides to present our 10 recommended products. Okay, first up.

Boxes

We know: obvious, right? But when moving house, you just can’t have enough cardboard boxes - and if you’ve got them in various different sizes, that’s even better. The AmazonBasics range for example has tons of different sized boxes, some small enough for DVDs, others big enough for a computer. If you order boxes in bulk they will likely come flat-packed too, so you can keep them out of your way and assemble them when necessary.

Storage Bins

Although serving a very similar function to boxes, having sealable storage bins is always a good idea, as their tougher, more water-resistant exteriors are ideal for transporting valuables. Also, thanks to being transparent, they make organizing your belongings easier when it comes to off-loading them in your new home - which is especially handy if you need to quickly locate essentials like clothing and toiletries. And if you’re really organised, you can group things appropriately when packing, so that the storage bins can go straight onto shelves in your new home.

Protective Packaging

Putting everything in boxes and storage bins is all well and good, but if those things are fragile, then you’ll need to protect them with appropriate packaging. There are tons of different types of protective packaging, but a (literally) flexible go-to is bubble wrap. This air-pocket wrapping can be bundled up, cut and shaped to protect pretty much anything - but it’s particularly useful when it comes to transporting kitchenware, like plates and glasses.

Tape

This will be your best friend when moving house. Tape can be used to seal, and add extra reinforcement, to boxes, bundle together cables, stick remotes to the back of TVs and anything else your imagination can conjure up. And if you ask us, we’d say go big: opt for a reliable, super-sticky tape like Gorilla Tape. That way, you won’t be nervously sweating every time you pick up a heavy box.

Labels

Okay, so you’ve got a pile of cardboard boxes at your new front door - but the only way you’re going to know what’s in each box, is if you label up. The sticky labels you use don’t have to be anything special, they just need to be big enough to write on. And labels are great for other things too, like sticking on cabinet doors so you, or whoever may be helping you, know where all your stuff is going. Just be sure to write neat and clear, which brings us to our next entry...

Permanent Markers

When it comes time to write on labels — or tape — it definitely helps to have multiple markers in circulation, so you’re not left searching for one. It’s best to use permanent markers when writing on things like boxes and tape too, so that whatever you write won’t wipe off in transit. We recommend these click-top markers from Sharpie, as you can use them with one hand, which is ideal if you’re holding something in the other.

Utility Knife

Whether you’re shaping the aforementioned cardboard boxes and bubble wrap, or you need to cut the zip ties you used to keep all of your computer cables tidy, a utility knife is an absolute must for moving. And similar to markers, it helps to have multiple utility knives on hand, because they can come in handy for multiple tasks. If possible, we recommend buying a multipack like this one, so that you and your helpers can continue doing your thing without having to rely on one communal knife.

Shoulder Dolly

Managing the weight of a sofa or washing machine is one thing, but trying to maintain your grip while having numb fingers is a whole different story. That’s why shoulder dolly moving straps are great. Not only does a dolly help you maintain an upright posture when lifting, but it allows you to lift objects with your whole body, instead of just your arms. And speaking of your arms, when using the shoulder dolly, your arms will be free to help direct the object you’re lifting… or open doors!

Vacuum Storage Bags

No matter how you fold clothes, they’re bulky, and they can take up valuable box and truck space when moving. One solution is to vacuum-pack them, which can save tons of space. In fact, according to Spacesaver who makes these bags, they can reduce the size of objects by 80 per cent. They’re simple to use, too - you just pack your clothes in the plastic bags, and then suck out the excess air using either your vacuum cleaner, or the included hand pump.

First Aid Kit

When taking on a big task like moving house, we’d recommend having a kind of “survival bag” nearby at all times - and this can contain everything useful from spare clothes to snacks, and of course, a first aid kit. With all the lifting, sticking and cutting you’ll likely be doing, it helps to have things like bandages at hand in case someone has an accident. You might think it’s excessive, but it’s always best to be prepared. So which of these moving essentials is the most important? Well, you could argue that they’re all pretty much equally important! With that said, you’re really not going to get very far — pun intended — unless you have boxes, tape and bubble wrap, so we’d prioritise those.
