How Pokémon Became a Global Phenomenon: Trading Card Game

With “Pokémon Go” all the rage in 2016, Rickey Yaneza was on his way to catch a Snorlax in Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn, New York, as he streamed his journey. Just behind Yaneza, a guy approaches and punches the streamer across the face, knocking the streamer to the ground. The man mugs Yaneza of his devices as he begs him not to. But the mugger doesn’t listen and runs away with the phone as it’s still recording footage. Yaneza went to the hospital to have his injuries looked at, and the police were called in. After this, for some bizarre reason, Twitch suspended Yaneza’s account for supposedly violating their “Non-Gaming Content” clause for getting robbed on camera.

In 2015, Japanese streamer Daasuke decided to have a break from playing “Minecraft” and show off his lighter collection. After spilling a bit of lighter fluid on one device, he cleans it up, at least he thinks so. He then uses the device to light a match, causing the item to go up in flames. Panicking, Daasuke places the lit match into a bag filled with flammable materials. As he focuses on the device problem, the trash bag fire gets bigger. Quickly spiraling out of control, he pours water on it, which does little. We then have the eerie image of an empty gaming chair with the room filling with smoke. According to reports, Daasuke and his family were fine, beyond some minor injuries.

#8: Amsterdam Assault

In 2022, Reydempto, who moved from the U.S to Amsterdam, Netherlands, was doing a live stream in the city one evening. He was chatting about how safe it was with police stations nearby. Then, a stranger puts his arm around him and threatens to kill Reydempto on video. The intoxicated man soon begins to strangle Reydempto as he begs for him to let go. The camera then falls, and we see nothing but a black screen with a feeling of dread. According to reports afterward, Reydempto was choked until he was unconscious. He later discovered he had a concussion from the attack. Thanks to clearly seeing the assailant's face on the video, he was later arrested by the police.

It’s bad enough to be detained by the police, but it's another thing entirely when someone takes advantage of the situation to make some cash. In 2015, Mr_13ig had the police visit over a noise complaint. When he refused to give the officer his name, they arrested him and escorted him from his apartment. Since none of the cops bothered to lock the door, minutes after the arrest, an opportunistic neighbor proceeded to enter the streamer’s apartment and loot various valuable objects. All while Mr_13ig’s fans witnessed the audacious theft on video. The moderators on the stream informed the police, who quickly arrested the robber with the easiest evidence. All of the stolen items were later returned to the streamer.

Andy Milonakis’ birth certificate might say he’s in his mid-40s, yet he could easily pass for someone much younger due to a growth hormone deficiency. And the actor nearly got abducted for his condition. In 2017, he was streaming when a stranger approached and invited him to a “tea party” while handing over a lollipop. The two are soon walking down the street together, singing occasionally. Honestly, it gets weirder and weirder as time goes on, with plenty of flashing red flags for Milonakis to run away. Especially when the stranger kept asking the streamer to turn off the camera. But Milonakis plays it cool. Once they get to a store, Milonakis casually slips away from the stranger toward safety.

#5: Drunk Gun

Drinking with a weapon next to you is never a good idea. Especially when you’re streaming. That was the case for Carl Riemer in 2020. While getting hammered and playing “Call of Duty,” he decided to do some play-acting with the firearm and the fans. He then accidentally pulls the trigger and obliterates a G-Fuel container. Just as shocked as the viewers, Riemer then states he just emptied the magazine for the weapon, accidentally leaving one in the chamber, it seems. Not surprisingly, Twitch soon banned his account. Then, to make matters worse, Riemer was dropped from the esports team SoaR. He posted an apology video online the next day for the “biggest mistake” of his life.

#4: Dota Don't

In 2014, Sajedene was playing “Dota 2” like any other streaming session. But then there’s a knock at the door, and her roommate goes to investigate. Soon after, yelling is heard, and Sajedene springs up from her seat to see what’s happening. Then, someone holding a weapon walks into the frame as they search the area. Sajedene’s teammates can be heard saying they’ll call the police after the game… wow. Afterward, Sajedene spoke about what went down. The robbers had forced their way into the property to look for drugs they thought she had. Turns out it was a case of mistaken identity. Finding nothing, they started stealing everything. One of the thieves was later arrested, thanks to Sajedene’s “Dota” community.

#3: Hot Tub Session

Twitch has a bit of a trend of women gamers streaming while lounging in a hot tub. Well, in 2021, GeorgeNotFound decided to parody this with his own steamy stream. And it was a wild, weird ride. Fully clothed and with socks, he gets into the tub. He had a wheel of fortune that featured different options depending on where it stopped. The worst items include cracking an egg on his head, drinking the tub water, and pouring Coke into the water for the viewers' enjoyment. Amazingly, at the stream’s peak, it had 400,000 concurrent viewers on Twitch, smashing the previous record of Pokimane and the OfflineTV crew, reaching a little over 100,000.

#2: Speed Streaming

Breaking the law and recording it on your phone is pretty dumb. Never mind live streaming your criminality. Well, Onasi Olio-Rojas broadcasted his dangerous driving on Facebook Live as he sped through traffic. At one point, he reached 116 miles per hour! The video cuts out when Olio-Rojas crashes into a garbage truck. He had his bad injuries treated at a hospital. Olio-Rojas has a history of reckless driving and has been arrested for it several times. You’d hope this near-miss would be a wake-up call, and Olio-Rojas would learn to cycle instead or drive carefully, at least. But no, he was arrested a few months later after another highway crash and driving with a suspended license.

Sushipotato, who’s half-Japanese and half-Irish, regularly posts what life’s like in Japan. In one video, she tries to enter a club but is rejected since the bouncer states, "no foreigners." After picking up some food and stopping near the club, the bouncer demands she leaves the public street. When Sushipotato refuses, he proceeds to terrifyingly drag her into the road via her backpack. It’s not the only time Sushipotato has had weirdness happen on her stream. As she walks down a street, a guy in a car yells that he’s a fan. Knowing it's her birthday, he gives her a Tiffany box. Sushipotato then gets in his car to open it and thank him. This could’ve gone bad but ended wholesome instead.
